No sooner than did those words leave Gin's mouth did the world around him distort. The world created by Chiron had heard his purpose, and had pronounced itself judge, jury, and executioner over what it would create him. Obstacles, challenges, and trials manifested in this distorted space, demanding that Gin take them head-on while facing the prospect of death all the while.

Even a single misstep here would mean he would fail.

Rule number two: Resolve.

Rule number three: Analyze.

Rule number four: Plan.

Rule number five: Execute.

Rule number six: Focus.

Rule number seven: Initiative.

Rule number eight: Polish.

Rule number nine: Glimpse.

After these first nine trials...

"It doesn't matter what sort of hero you are. At some point, you're going to have to defend something dear to you, whether it's a place, a person, an object, or just your own life. And that means you need to decide what doing so means to you."

The world spun yet again, but this time when it stopped there was something different. Gin was back in Fuyuki, in the place he knew as home. For a moment, he might wonder if the training had ended right there, if they had been interrupted somehow.

But then the black fire came, consuming souls and grudges as it spread across the city.

The agents of a foreign land spread their net, taking advantage of those flames to win over the populace and subvert the local powers.

A monster beneath a blue, blue glass moon tore through the streets, devouring all that it came across.

"Boss, we need to find a way to put out this fire!"

"Boss, we gotta save these people!"

"Boss, we gotta rally everyone!"

"Boss, we need to kill that monster!"

"Boss, we have to..."

"Boss, we gotta..."

"Boss-"

"Boss-"

"Boss-"

There were none of his men beside him, but the voices echoed inside his mind nonetheless, as Chiron stood passively before him.

"What does it mean for you to defend something? What do you focus on first? What battles do you fight, and what battles do you resign?"

"You said you want to be the 'coolest hero'. What does that mean? When something dear to you is in danger, what do you do? Show me your answer. Get out there and save what you love, however the 'coolest hero' would."

"This is rule number ten: Protect."

Reinforced with the strength of his demons and the magecraft of the witch who would be traveling with him, the ship left port.

He took in a sharp breath, a self-satisfied grin spreading across his face.

Yes, after all, even if the Holy Grail War had yet to complete itself, he had little reason to stay here any longer. There was comparatively little to gain, and far too much to lose. In that sense, it was best to simply retire, to pack up everything, return home, and leave those participants of the war to their own devices.

This had all been beyond his expectations, truth be told.

He had obtained the funds needed to start his life's work.

He had obtained multiple familiars whose power exceeded even his greatest expectations.

He had gained an invaluable contact in the Clock Tower.

He had gained the business associates who had joined him in departing Fuyuki.

And, of course, he had gained something else.

Ah, it was such a pity, but he hadn't tried to convince her to come with him. She had a desire all her own, after all, so it was all he could do to fulfill his side of their business transaction before saying his farewells. Besides, he was always just a codec call away.

"I hope you come out of this alive. It'd ruin the celebration if I learned you died right after I left...Benita."

Well, no matter. What would happen would happen.

His eyes flitted over, looking to the false demons, the man-eating monster, the witch, and the necromancer.

He'd hoped that other one would have joined them, but sadly he seemed to have wanted to stay behind for now. Ah well, he knew how to reach them when he eventually decided to head out, so that would be fine in the end.

"Welcome to Dark Amazon, everyone."

Yes. After all, even if this was the end of his participation in Fuyuki's Second Holy Grail War, this was not the end of Evan Strauss.

"Let's get to conquering."

Space bent.

Around the pair, the world distorted, something else taking its place. For a moment, the image of a mountaintop cavern flickered over the environment, before a white plane took its place, extending out in all directions.

Archer stood in place, his expression a startling one for anyone who had interacted with him over the course of the war. His jaw was set, eyes glinting with a hard light that went against everything he had shown prior to that point. For just a moment, the shadow of something else stood visible behind him, stretching up into the whiteness before it faded just as quickly as it appeared.

“Let’s begin.”

His inflection was changed from how he had spoken since his summoning.

“Think about why you’re here, why you’re doing this. Maybe there’s someone you want to protect or avenge, something you want to create, something you want to destroy. Something you care about, something you despise. Maybe you want honor. Maybe you want to leave something behind. Maybe you just want to fight. I don’t care what it is, but decide on it now. That’s your tether.”

A hero without a tether is hopelessly weak. That is why a completed hero will certainly fall to an incomplete one, as the latter still has something to strive for. That is why the other ‘me’ is something I must stand opposite, as he’s lost sight of our tether.

To create “something beautiful”. To give rise to something worthy of being called the strongest hero. An impossible goal, but the one we chased after nonetheless.

And we nearly managed it. We exceeded what even our wildest imaginations were. That one, he approached the precipice, perhaps closer than anyone else. Nonetheless, he fell short, as he was doomed to.

...for after all, if you pursue the title of “strongest hero”, there is a wall you cannot cross. That wall is not something that can be surpassed. Indeed, it is impossible to overtake it. No matter how strong you are, every ounce of strength you gain will only make that wall stronger in turn.

Yes, for a hero, it is impossible to surpass him.

...but, that doesn’t mean it isn’t worth trying.

Because, even if you don’t have the potential, even if nothing currently exists in the world with the potential, that doesn’t mean that something with that potential can never arise.

A hero is someone who accomplishes the impossible, so...

-A word like "impossible" does not deserve to have meaning to us.

This war is a farce. Anyone who cannot recognize this is an incompetent. Even the simplest glance at the spiritual foundations of its participants, an examination of the line that connects those foundations to the ritual cornerstone, or anything along those regards can reveal the truth. While there may be a higher purpose that a true examination would be needed to garner, the “wish” promised by this is nothing more than the result of a sacrificial ritual.

Ordinarily, then, I would not be bothered. I would merely entertain myself.

...However, these eyes of mine have seen a future, a fraction of a fraction of a chance where I can reach something with that potential.

I am not someone who has given up on my tether, as that other fool bearing my name has. So, I must obtain the result of that sacrifice, in order to reach that chance.

As the god of Thessaly, on my forgotten name as ■■■■■■, I swear it: I will obtain that possibility. And so—

“Hold onto it. Because everything you’re about to go through is going to test how strong that hold is. If you let go of it, you’ll die.”

A solemn grin split his face. In spite of his words, there was something else there, the manic excitement of something that was fundamentally inhuman.

“That’s rule number one: Purpose.”

And so, Hell began.

It took.

And so, it screamed.

The Saint Graph was devoured, along with its “everything”. Information, mystery, memories, all such things were taken in by it.

Ah, ah, ah-

So this was it.

This was what it meant to be human.

This joy at being able to feel.

This sorrow at its siblings not having the same.

The hope for a brighter future.

It understood, now. It understood what the hero felt at seeing his friend perish. It understood the anguish in the homunculus's eyes. It understood the excitement of its master.

Power. Power, power, an overwhelming power. But more important than the power was the meaning behind it. This was the state that their master had sought for them to reach. This was the step needed for them to transcend their original designation and become something else.

It's an easy 'form' to understand. That's why it's filled with primeval power.

Its master's voice echoed along their connection.

If you want this name...don't die so easily. Tear everything apart. Change all substances into your own element. Mock the name of ■■■■■■■■■■ himself.

You can stand on your own two feet now. Congratulations on your promotion to named partner, '■■■■■■■'.

A name.

No, a Unit Designation.

Something changed. Something irreparably changed. From the outside, there was no discernable difference, but there was no doubt that something fundamental to its existence had changed.

No longer a familiar. Now, it was its own being.

Yes, for in this world, there exists that boy who can materialize the wishes of mankind, granting them a form. A wishgranter who creates illusions. A wishgranter who creates demons.

Yes, for in this world, angels are known as supernatural beings that have been reclassified as angels or beings that have been given power by their master.

This being could be said to have become both.

It was something that did not belong in this world. Something impossible that had materialized. Something that was forever distant to those concepts held by others.

Imaginary demon. Materialized wish. Biological curse. Sixth Imaginary Aspect.

And, having been granted a name by its former master, having received a Unit Designation, it had transcended beyond its former limits.

Its form shifted, writhed, compressed.

It assumed the body it had been granted at its birth, as now that body suited it all the more. A childlike laugh tore out of its body.

From the distended figure of a man, it drew into itself, forming a whirling cacophony of black, a miniature tornado within which sat the alabaster eye that had consumed Yamato.

...no.

Not a tornado.

It was the hallmark of something entirely different.

The "true form" of the demons that been painstakingly crafted and raised at the hands of Evan Strauss. The foremost exhibition of their nature and their purpose. And now, it was free. Free of a master, free of weakness, free of blindness. It was a being that could exceed its own nature and become something truly incredible. It was the herald of a new age.

Ah.

Ah, the food cart was closing.

No. No, that wasn't allowed. That wasn't permissible.

It had to reach there before it closed.

"Hero Achilles, a betrayer does not deserve a glorious death."

And so, with a speed that touched into the realm of a Servant, its arm extended.

No, not extended. Lengthened.

Its arm streaked out even as it itself moved, cutting through the air to reach its target.

Yes, indeed, the outcome had been decided. Yamato Takeru's death was determined. But, there was an instant, the barest instant of time, and it was in just the position to take advantage of that instant.

Its arm touched Yamato.

Sever.

"Something" broke. Lacking magecraft knowledge, she would likely be unable to gauge what had just happened, but her Master certainly would. If they were still alive when this occurred, there would be no doubt that they would understand.

After all, their line to their Servant had just been cut. But not merely that, that alone would be insufficient, since its goal was to-

From within it, something pulsed. An alabaster eye.

The space around it...

-Quivered, boiled up, undulated.

What covered its body shone white, bright white.

-Like a dark night. Like a shadow. Its form changed. The white light coming from the eye formed a strange pattern. It shook. It shook. It shook. And then-

-Next, its right arm warped. Eating, tearing its flesh. Black pervasions pierced its shoulder. They had the same hardness as what dwelled within its body, scraping against each other, grating, grating, grating. The same change was taking place along all its body. Its skin broke, its flesh broke, and the darkness shook, shook, shook. And then, finally...

-A white fracture ran through its body, tearing open its chest.

"Pitiful one who stole the name of Susanoo, your voice wasn't heard."

Seal.

Something impossible occurred.

The Servant, Yamato Takeru, vanished.

...no, not vanished. She was sealed, locked into that alabaster eye buried inside of it.

And so-

"Thanks for the meal."

It devoured.

Take.

It had dealt with the intercessor. She had no sway here until she had donned a hard hat. Multiple hard hats, in the case of her current form.

-However.

The foreman had left. It did not yet truly understand what it meant to be human, it did not yet truly understand what the homunculus felt. It had flashes of images and memories, but it as of yet lacked the context needed to give those minutae meaning.

Thus, seeing the foreman leave as dusk fell, it thought only one thing.

Ah.

She must be going on break.

And so, it moved, hastily following after Benita as it let out a sharp whistle in an attempt to catch her attention. In its hand was gripped a meticulously-wrapped lunchbox, something that one of the yakuza had prepared earlier in the day with a practiced ease that made it evident that he was likely a father. What a responsible man.

"You forgot your food-"

Its voice cut off. Yes, even if it could outpace Benita by far in "speed", it was frozen to the spot as it realized that something was off.

She was not turning around. She seemed to be thinking of other matters. She did not seem to want her food. It surmised that the food was left behind on purpose.

Ah.

Well then.

Break time.

Its younger sibling was left in charge of the construction site for the time being. After all, it was now on break.

-However.

It did not bring food.

Nor did a kindly yakuza happen to pack it some food.

Thus, it would have to arrange something for itself.

Spying something some thirty meters away, clearly visible on the leveled land even if it was not capable of seeing through its spiritual senses, it found a suitable place.

A food cart that was just about to open.

There was a change.

Its master had of course been a witness to the battle between hero and monster, and more specifically, to the sudden arrival of a third Servant who struck at the hero.

Its master was not aware of the intricacies of the fight, that the new arrival was allied to the hero or that the new arrival was attempting to save him. Such things couldn't be surmised by mere sight, after all. The hero who possessed that seven-petaled shield, Ajax the Great, fell into a hopeless death.

...and then he came. Benita's Servant, the man wreathed in resplendent armor, the hero who brought a world down upon Miyama: Achilles.

Yes, its master did not know the nature of the alliance that had just been shattered, nor did its master know what Benita herself was currently suffering through the reliving of. All its master knew was what could be seen from the outside and used as a means of guessing.

...but, that was enough.

If the words of Yamato Takeru and Achilles were any indication, the two had been allied, along with Ajax, and this was a betrayal of the latter.

If the reactions of Benita were any indication, this act had dealt a blow to her like few others.

If the memories of its master were any indication, Benita was also allied with the Matou.

In other words...

A tyrant, a picture of cowardice, wailed, too frightened to stand:
"I understand! I'll praise you! On my honor as king, I'll praise you!
"S-so don't come any closer, monster!"

A blond man, remarkable for his haughty bearing, said:
"Incredible! I'm jealous! The rumors were true: you are a monster! Have no fear. I will treat you well, and put you to good use. So long as you are with me, you are a monster no more.
"You are a great hero, the guardian of a future king."

Just before she had chosen her own death, the woman he had loved said:
"You've done nothing wrong.
"So please, don't curse the world. Don't hate your own blood.
"You're strong, so I'm sure you can do it.
"I couldn't."

Just before he stove his head in and flung him into the flames, what should have been an enemy soldier had said:
"Fath—"

-Something raced through its connection with its master.

-Something burned inside of it as it heard that grief-wracked command of Benita.

Sorrow. Frustration. Rage. Determination. Desire. Desire. Desire. Ah, ah, ah, so this is what it means, this is the meaning of becoming a human and indeed it is painful but now it makes sense now it is clear why the master is like this why he chases after that desire because it burns within him a primal impulse that stems from that place without a name and so we charge charge endlessly into that distance and if there is anything that tries to obstruct that tries to delay that tries to hurt then remove it-

"Protect her."

He spoke.

"I will."

It spoke.

"I will attend to the interruptor. You will not be interfered with here, that is the promise of my master."

It did not know how to comfort another. After all, it was still taking its first steps into becoming a living being, but nonetheless, there was something behind those words, a determination that flowed both from its master and itself.

"He has asked me to protect you. I apologize if you do not need such a thing, but I will do so regardless, as I agree with his words. He has deemed you as someone who 'deserves to be happy'. I still do not understand what that means, but-"

An involuntary pause. It was unsure why that came.

"...I believe it is something worthwhile."

And so, it departed from the private room, towards the place where an intercessor had made their appearance. A shambling thing of the same familiars that its brother had just consumed. A construct of Matou, its master told it. As it had not yet learned arrogance, it was thus wary, even with the knowledge of the ease that its brother had managed these very familiars with.

"Leave this place. The individual you are looking for is not accepting visitors."

"...besides that, you are not wearing a hard hat. You are thus not allowed on these premises."

It couldn't help but get that last quip in.

Perhaps this is what becoming a true being meant.

The newly-arrived Servant and Master caused the Archer's eyes to glint in bemusement. Yes, this man, a Saber if his mention of a sword was any indication, was undoubtedly a 'hero'; the immaterial radiance he gave off was an indication of that much.

"...trade? Kid, don't be fuckin' dumb. Just cause yer my competita' doesn't mean I'm boutta turn away someone who comes ta my bar askin' for help, 'specially after dealin' with some dipshit earlier today."

He replied with a shrug as he stepped inside his territory. The grin across his face spread slightly with those next words from the Saber. "...hey, horse kid, talk ta me later, will ya? Ya Servant's got some issues I'mma clean up first."

Taking a seat on a barstool, the Archer's eyes glinted. "Love, huh?" He murmured out softly, an almost wistful light entering those eyes.

"Love's somethin' important, but ya can't let it control ya, aight kid? Hate, hate's easy. Hate thins out tha more ya use it. Love? Love just gets stronga. Love drives you with an obsession ya can't curb, turns ya into somethin' that'll bare its fangs against a peaceful present in tha name of it. So, don't let ya love control ya. Contain it, undastand it. Don't reject it, don't leave it unfetta'd. If ya let it take ya over, if ya let it consume ya, then ya ain't you anymore. Then ya nothin'."

"It ain't a squabble ta me. Ya've got a fire in ya eyes, ya've got a will that I can admire, but ya gotta temper it."

A soft exhale left him as she shook his head, expression clearing up.

"...so, I'll tell ya what. I'm gonna give ya a gift. I'll give ya what ya need to beat whateva's in ya way, ta take ya swooooord back and win ya love, but here's the snag. If ya go too far, if ya lose yaself to that love and turn from a hero inta a monsta in its name, then ya'll force my hand."

Turning his head to the bartender, his eternal brother, he spoke. "...Donnie, he's got a god's poison in 'im. Looks to be a notch weaka' than the hydra's stuff against non-Greeks. Gimme somethin' that'll alleviate the symptoms, but keep tha cause. He gets stronga' when shit's stacked against 'im, so leave enough behind that th' ability of 'is stays in effect. Heal 'im, but also keep that continuous buff goin'."

And so, a glass of wine was poured, one that held the promise of changing the face of this war.

Devil's Mask of Primordial Rupture: False World Shaytan-Ea
Za Boat, Harbor

Light.

Light, light, searing light. That light of the ruined tree, a might on par with even a great Noble Phantasm, streaked towards the ship.

The planet wailed.

Prana gushed from around the mask in preparation of the strike of the tree.

"...heh, don't hold back."

She was not speaking to the tree that had been leveled by their assault.

No, like the tree itself speaking to the world...she was speaking to the light that was enveloping space...or rather, she was speaking to the planet itself.

The ten magi's voices were unified as they spoke to the planet, as their prayer for a miracle was realized.

In an instant, as if the gush of prana prior was a mere prelude, several times more erupted, a veritable tornado enveloping the mask's form.

It was a concept that propagated life.

An ember formed to traverse the terror of Genesis.

One that made hell Paradise.

Unfazed by the separation of Heaven and Earth.

From past to future, from future to eternity.

Connecting the land and the sea to the sky.

Because life was carved with the terror of sin, men shall even purge their genes.

A mask and a curse. She was a demon and an instrument.

-And since the world was already hell, humans shall make it a paradise and purge the fire of Genesis.

A song with the words forgotten. A melody without any notes.

Yes, for if that light you throw forth is born from "life"...

Then I will show you something which surpasses that life itself.

Listen here, for now and forever I proclaim-

I am the world that sunders the Void.

I am the demon who shatters all lies.

I am the primordial rupture that severs all obstacles.

I am Shaytan-Ea. And before me...

"A world like you does not deserve to exist---!"

The lights met.

Death.
The world of the devil's mask.

Life.
The world of the divine tree.

The two worlds clashed forces. It was a cataclysm that tore space apart for an instant, and throughout the expanse...

-"Life" was utterly crushed.

Well, he had nearly stepped back in.

On his way in, someone new arrived. No, not someone new, but someone old. The one who he'd gotten the horse wine out for, the second one he'd gotten the horse wine out for, and his Servant.

Archer's eyes flitted over to the Saber, pausing for a moment before nodding.

"Yeah, I can see that. Someone did a numbah on ya, huh?"

His gaze tore into Roland, dissecting him with a clarity that was difficult to reconcile with the rotund balding figure he possessed.

"...now that's interestin'. The poison smashin' ya up is some potent stuff, but ya spiritual foundation's just gettin' stronger. One a' those 'more stacked the odds, higher the power' types, huh? Yeah, yeah I feel ya. Lesse, just healin' ya ta full'd help ya, sure, but it'd also mean that continuous strengthenin' ya got'll stop on the spot. Feels like a shame ta just get rid a'that, don't ya think?"

A bemused grin spread on his lips, as he manifested and handed the Master and Servant the standard gallon-sized bottle of booze.

"Come on in. I'll hook ya up with somethin' special. We value repeat customers."

Lightning from the draugrs raced forth, slicing through the air, and met it.

Take.

-And without warning, the lightning vanished, its target unfazed by its presence, as though nothing had ever happened.

The insects came. A swarm came to cover it, attempting to engulf it. Insects chittered, attempting to utilize magecraft to disrupt its connection with its master.

Of course, precautions had already been taken, on several levels.

Take.

Something burst out of it.

Those insects in its immediate area were lost in a moment, their "everything" taken from them. Those that remained at a distance found their spells faltering, unable to even affect it, as though the spells were barred from entering its very reality. And yet, there was something else there too, something deeper. A prayer for death. What was-

Something else arrived. A mangled sphere of bones and poison. The bones reached out to stop it, to steal its prize and to continue on its way, however...

The moment that skeleton amalgam touched it, it found itself pinned to the spot by an unknown force.

Something tore into the bones of the new arrival. A crushing iciness, a searing heat, and then nothing. The bones fell apart, the power animating them fell apart, the poison coating them fell apart.

No, it was not that they merely fell apart, but that it had torn their nature from them. This profane thing, whatever it was, had treated the creation of a Servant's Noble Phantasm in the same way as it had the familiars of modern magi.

Take.

And so, not even a few scant seconds having passed since it first acquired its target, it darted away, exiting the railyard. In the first place, none of the beings here were sufficient in ability to follow it directly.

All the while, the presence of the spear in its grip was weakening.

...No, not merely that.

The spear itself was fading away, receding into the body of the one who held it.

Oh.

Ach had fled.

Damn.

Well, he'd be back.

They always came back.

At any rate, the arrival of his newest guest in the wake of his second-best student's flight caused the Archer to offer a drunken grin in response. Without warning, a gallon-sized bottle of the requested drink manifested in his hands, to be passed off to the new arrival.

As expected of Chiron.

"Drink up, kid. When ya head starts spinnin', come on in. Lotta crazy stuff happenin' lately, but here at Pelion's Pub? Stability, trust, family, blackouts, that's what ya can expect."

With that said, the Archer moved to reenter his bar, as all the solicitors were finally chased off.

"...oh, huh."

It seemed like the kid from earlier had poofed off. Poor bastard, looked like he'd gotten shanked while dealing with Chiron's punishment. Eh, that was life for you.

Also apparently there was a tree? He couldn't really bring himself to be excited about that, though. Let the humans do their shit.

It arrived.

In the first place, its travel speed and initial distance to the site made such things trivial.

In the second place, its master had been watching the proceedings from their first occurrence.

Thus, it was only natural. It was only natural that he would realize that what had arrived here was a perfect opportunity for it, in the same way that he had realized that it posed a perfect opportunity for himself, albeit in a different way.

It was only natural that it would be sent to retrieve the object that had resulted from a battle on the other side of the city.

Its master's familiar network made such things as locating it trivial. In the negligible time needed for it to arrive, it was already aware of where its target was.

In the first place, its speed was leagues ahead of those other trifling familiars being sent for the target. As such, well before the arrival of the draugr, it was there.

It located the spear.

It grasped the spear.

Take.

And so it departed.
