Casting my interest! I'll work up something soon
I expect that's true, depending on how they repopulate. Probably hurt during the war, maybe some lean times right after (10-30 years) but surged back as other populations recovered like deer or whatever. Probably peaked a couple hundred years ago if they breed like other animals. Or about now if the are pretty slow.
I'm sure some heroes did that during the war, if not dragons then maybe drakes or wyverns. Which is close enough for legends to run with.

And Darius has no idea how old it is, besides youngish.
@SophrusAh damnit, i was hoping to play Dragonriders as "something that should never exist". Given that dragons see the small races as thralls... if not food.

That would make sense in current times, I would figure they would have been around during the war though. But I can edit (probably tomorrow) If you want. Not a big deal to me
Darius

Darius rolled out of his cot at the inn and glanced outside, "Ah blast it ye old coot, sleeping through half the day. Bah!" He continued a stream of incomprehensible grumbling as he gathered his belongings and prepared himself for the day. Once done he went down stairs and ordered a huge breakfast with stout ale, it was late morning and the bar maid was not accustomed to serving ale so early. He hastily scarfed down the meal and payed for everything, with an extra silver for the maid.

He left the tavern and called the golems and cart to his side by simply shouting into the barn. He waited a moment while the large golem dragged the cart outside, "Right, c'mon ya fat bastard. We needa find that wizard boy, Whats his name?" he said to himself not looking in the direction of the Defender. "Some 'elp you are" he said scowling at the machine knowing full well it cant speak. "Me thinks to go 'round the castle, I 'ear the architecture is interestin' maybe find that lad."

We wandered the streets when a dragon roared overhead, "Well now, don' see them round these parts. Hrmmpf" he grunted not a fan of the dragons that liked to eat dwarves and lay claim to the treasure rooms of dwarven holds. Though few dragons are old or powerful enough to lay low the defenses of an ancient city, but new outposts are frequently raided. "Looks like a youngling, mayhaps a year or three?" he glanced at the defender Golem "Oh sod off, i ain't a dragon-ology expert. Ye may haveta help the guard lads, I dont 'spect they fight many o' the lizard bastards"

Darius started walking quicker, The golem simply lengthened its stride to keep pace as they neared the landing site of the dragon. Darius rounded the corner just as the king spoke to the dragon.. no, not the dragon, the rider. Darius slowed, not having seen a dragon rider before. He had heard of them, sure, but never really thought that they existed since the great war. Darius came to a stop a ways back not realizing he was within a dozen yards of Arlo his gaze transfixed by the young dragon. A dwarven battle Golem and a dragon in a human city is a rare site, seeing both in a single day would be a once in a life time situation.

Mortan

The Lich paced his stony room troubled at the implications of his vision through the mage. "The war was supposed to be over, it must be over... I... I dont remember enough, and too much." Mortan paused in his pacing, tracing a bone finger along his exposed jaw bone, "No, no, the living will always wage their petty wars... But if none are living..." The Lich trailed off as he came to a decision.

Mortan turned to a small heap of corpses, most of them where old and rotten away to skeletons but a few where dry and desiccated like the Lich himself. "To end them all.. Ill need more." He stood over the pile and began softly chanting, a green-black orb of power growing in front of him.

“gtrah iru fangra,
gtrah iru fangra,
gtrah iru fangra,
Iah, Iah, Iah, Iah!”

The orb sank slowly into the pile and deformed to cover the whole thing. Limbs started twitching and corpses began pulling themselves together and rising. Before long a dozen skeletons and dried zombies stood before Mortan, awaiting orders. "Come!" He commanded and began striding out of his little workshop, he Ascended some stairs, through a hall and into a light that hadn't struck him in hundreds of years. He stood on a balcony of a fort's keep. He stared at the wasteland arrayed around him. Still scarred with craters from ancient dwarven siege weapons and the land sundered from terrible magic from ages past. All around the fort was still dead, no plants or animals dared to near the fort as the ancient war had left a blight on the land.

"Where to begin"

Sorry! RL has been a mess, catching up!
Darius

"Hey, thanks anyway. I've got to go too... got a lot of work to do tonight. If I come and buy you a drink tomorrow, will you show me how your friends work?" said the human

Darius watched the others leave, he was surprised at their reaction, he half expected the lady to stay for the protection of his light. If she wanted to be eaten by the shadow things that was her business. The knight would be fine though, his horse was a curiosity and Darius wanted to know how it worked.

"Eh? Oh, yes a few Ales will be great. What friends do you mean?" he followed the Human's gaze to the constructs and grunted grumpily in a way only a dwarf can. "humpf, Nay lad. Constructs like these bastards are a secret of mine clan and ye know how dwarves can be about their secrets. Hah!" He laughed sure that the human knew how stubborn dwarves where. Before looking down one of the streets towards the Tavern. "Anyway, good luck Lad. I best be leaving" He streched with a great groan of an old man "These old bones need their rest"

He turned to leave calling the constructs to him, once out of sight of the human he called a stop quietly and told his Defender to go and find one of the shadow beasts. The construct lumbered off into the darkness, while Darius dug around in his cart for a few containers specifically a wired cage and a large glass bottle with a wide mouth. A few moments later he heard metallic boots stomping quickly in the nearby alley. It was getting rather noisy, he heard some crates or barrels crush with a sound of splintering wood. Darius winced he didn't actually want a confrontation with the guards and the commotion would draw them sooner or later.

The construct returned with a fist full of inky black that writhed in its grasp clawing to escape. "hah, well done you fat bastard" Darius considered the shadow thing and decided capture it in the jar wrapping the jar in a thick bundle of cloth made the inside of he jar dark and using the light to.. encourage the creature it went to hide in the jar which was quickly sealed trapping the monster.

He sighed remembering his last words to the human, his old bones did need a rest. With that thought he returned to the tavern and had his cart placed in the small stable attached and had the guardian keep watch over it. Once inside he laid a few gold on the counter paying for a few rooms and a large cup of ale. He got himself a mild buzz and a good nights rest.
Oh I guess it's decided, I'll have to have a good brawl and hit on one of the female guards.

I'm sure that will go well!
@Jojo

I wasn't planning a brawl withe guard lol.
Darius

When the boy said the guards would 'arrest' people at night for their own protection Darius nearly burst out laughing and managed to keep himself down to a, rather loud, snort. He thought how funny it would be for a guard to try and arrest himself and the golem, mostly because of the stunned expression on the guards at the gate when they observed his golem much less if they tried to arrest it. Part of him wondered how long it would take for a few guards to find him and work up the courage to try... He decided that it would take too long and his old dwarf bones where too tired to wait for a good chuckle.

The robed human asked for Darius to escort these two back to somewhere safe. "You wot boy?" he said, while certainly sounding grumpy at the request there was no malice behind his words. "You want me tah escort this..." Darius said 'escort' sarcastically but trailed off when he glanced at the knight before grunting. "hrmpf, Creepy bastard and this ah, wee lass eh? Oi reckon the creepy bastard can handle a quarrel wit one o' the shadow beasties, maybe two." He says with a laugh knowing full well that the knight would probably put up a good fight for his Defender or scores of the shadow monsters. "As for askin questions.. if oi don' have anything else to do when you find me lad ill answer what you wish, but you will owe me an ale for each question alright boy?" and strategically not awaiting a reply to make a negative answer impossible "Thats a good lad"

Darius pondered a moment before actually answering the question "Oi suppose if you younglings care to follow oi won't try to stop ye, but oi want one of these shadow beasties if we can catch one of em." He smirked "Might get some shadow essence, or skewer one up some cooking" He laughed again finding himself hilarious, and knowing full well that probably none of the others would agree. "Oi will need tah know where a good tavern is, has tah be one with good ale" he said with a wink towards the group in general.
