She was newly married, so new that the โJust Marriedโ sticker still stuck to her husbandโs van like a faux Gucci label on a knock-off. Tijuana was just a pitstop in their honeymoon travels, a small one-night stay while they got their car fixed at the repair shop โ her husband wasnโt the best driver. The small one-night stay turned into a three-day stay and the three-day stay turned into Mary Emerson dancing on a table at a bar under the appreciative eye of Mateo Navarro. They had sex, of course. Wild, extramarital sex that ended with Mary staring at the โJust Marriedโ sticker as her husband drove their van away. He hasnโt even been born yet, and it was already a great start to Honeyโs miserable, pessimistic life. Mateo never bothered with Mary while she was abandoned in Tijuana until he found out she had a bun in the oven and his mother reluctantly took her in. Mary was the naรฏve sort, the sort to see kindness in Mateoโs mother where there was none, and later when she would recount her days in Tijuana, it was fondly. Then Honey was born. Mateoโs mother hated babiesโ crying and, after six months of little to no sleep, Mary was kicked out. Mary claims that Mateo tried to follow her, to come with her back to California, but obligations to his family kept him in Tijuana. Honey isnโt so sure that itโs true. The rest of his life isnโt as exciting. Mary jumped from man to man, clingy and romantic and just wanting to be loved, and every man walked out on her. His mom worked day shifts and night shifts and week shift and weekend shifts, so Honey was mostly left in a bar all day with his Uncle Benjamin. Honey grew up with a litany of father figures, all of them belonging to his uncleโs biker gang located in San Diego. Honey was always the smart kind, the quiet kid who got bullied until the whole biker gang pulled up to his school to complain to the principal (none of the kids dared come near him after that). He didnโt care about much, didnโt care about people much. Rather detached from life, the only thing that Honey really had any sort of interest in was science. He wasnโt obsessed with it, but he liked it enough to pass the time. When he was fourteen, his mother relocated to Long Beach with Uncle Benjamin and Honey began going to Oceanus High. He was in all AP classes and focused on academics, but people still saw him as a thug. This belief was only solidified when he jumped some jock after school for talking about his mother and the police were called on him - he was suspended for three days. Afterwards, Uncle Benjamin told him to get a hobby and stop being a nuisance.
