The modern world has too many restrictions. International laws, laws of war, treaties between a lot of countries that prevent them from either joining conflicts, or realistically fighting one another (like with NATO). A lot of the fun in these roleplays comes from going to war with other players. It'd be really hard to do that in a modern world (at least realistically).
Good point. Also, Maxwell seems to be doing a fine job as the Ottomans.

Colfax was from Indiana. I chose him because I didn't want Hamlin or Johnson. Just be thankful I didn't go with my gut choice of Thaddeus Stevens.
