That is the case if the one standing on the ground is Low Tier and some of the Intermediate Tier. But High Tiered stuff should be able to hold themselves, regardless they can fly or not.

The way I see it, the problem with the ship is not what it's capable of, it's that as long as Garret is in the ship, he's effectively isolated from the majority of the characters in the MV, which meant incredibly limited character interaction and since this isn't supposed to be "RAWRFIGHTFIGHTFIGHT!" part of the Arena, it gave another set of problem.
