you are exaggerating, one thing is acknowledging the existence of those other characters and one much different is giving the the same importance as the main characters, which is to say us. Specially when it is going to be a disappointment because the fact is that they are going to appear once or twice and a brief description such as "the leader of the other team was a blastoise with angered expression that seemed to be impatient" is more than enough. Do I need to know a full personality, aspirations and background of said blastoise to interact with it?
