I'd suggest just allowing them enter the story at a later point.
As for my latest IC post, let me know if it needs adjusting.
When Xukhezur's second optic orb orbiting the city spotted the demons amassing at the gate and informed him of the development, he abandoned his current strategy at the eastern walls. He took a moment to consider his options, and then telepathically bade his protomorphic minion via his jump suit's teleproxy transceiver, to prepare his mecha effigy 'Shroud' for battle. He left the wall and as he made his way through the city towards the main gate, others hastily passed him on their way inside nearby buildings. More than once, a soldier or two would beckon that he enter and follow the populace into the sewers, but all he did was shake his head and move on. He was looking to play a more active role.

Once he'd discovered a secluded alley space, he spent several seconds to rapidly open a small rectangular gate to his main demiplane. Beyond this gate's threshold, his minion stood with his shadowy draconic effigy near the large oak tree that dominated the small hill at the center of the demiplane. Now within range, Xukhezur simply transmitted his eiffgy into a position around himself before dismissing the gate.

Now within his construct, Xukhezur expended one of the temporary charges on his glove-stored staff to veil himself and his construct with the illusion of wearing the military regalia of the city. He then piloted his craft up into the sky to afford himself an aerial view of the surrounding city. Falling motes of fire from the storm helped illuminate the area, and he could spot the movements of those nearby. The demons had bypassed the gate, and had begun surging into the city. The knights and soldiers were staging a protected and dispersive retreat, with some baiting and kiting the demons astray, to buy time for populace to file into the sewers. He hoped for their sake, that they had a means of evading the retrievers' potent means of locating otherwise elusive quarry.

He then dropped down to fly low over the rooftops of the city in his construct, as he made his way for the main gate, hoping to place it within range of his magic before he could be effectively intercepted. He paused only to rapidly imbue his protomorphic jump suit with two temporary magical characteristics, one of which would enable him to move freely despite any attempt to physically hinder or restrain him. His speed and mobility were essential assets that he needed to maintain, if he was going to block the open gate with a spell effect or two, and peel off some demons that would otherwise attack the retreating soldiers.
I have a character that I might be interested in playing, although filling out the free +5 LA may take me a bit. If I play, could I apply the free +5 LA stuff at a later time, and gain retroactively any skill points from an increase to intelligence as if I possessed the templates from the beginning?
Almost every one of my online characters is D&D based, and they can be adapted to fit most campaigns. I also homebrew quite a bit of 3.5 material on my blog, and that homebrew needs all the play testing it can get. I typically only run IRL games, but I can run one online in a pinch. I'd love to get involved in a game.

In my 3.5 games, I've been experimenting with allowing only non-caster levels to be gestalted, in order to help them measure up against spellcasters (and manifesters). Given such a case, the prestige ranger, bard and paladin often prove a better choice than their base class counterparts in the long run. Indeed, any class that loses levels of spellcasting advancement can be gestalted at those levels where the spells don't advance. As such, fractional BAB and saves are implemented, with "poor" saves advancing by 1/3 per level and "good" saves advancing by 1/2 per level with a +2 increase at first level only.
I don't know about simplicity or low to mid power... but I have a few D&D based characters that are available.
It hadn't taken long for one of Xukhezur's optic orbs to inform him of the advancing of demonic retrievers and herzou engaging the defenders of the city's eastern wall, and Xukhezur hastily ran north from the southeast gate with a grim urgency. As he approached the screams and other sounds of combat, he ascended the nearest tower's stairwell to get a good view of the southernmost retreivers and herzou.

He then took several seconds to rapidly and covertly infuse the magic staff he kept stored in the extradimensional space of his casting glove, with a metamagically altered infusion that granted it a number of temporary charges. Afterwards, whilst still beyond the edge of where the soldiers were engaged in battle atop the wall, he began using his staff's temporary charges. The first charge he expended, resulted in an effect that temporarily accelerated the rate at which the staff could be triggered.

Xukhezur then began to work his way northward along the eastern wall, triggering the staff as he went to temporarily conjure static vertical walls composed of rapidly moving machinery set about three yards away from the city's outer wall. These conjured walls were at least a half foot thick, and composed of hundreds of assorted iron parts, spinning, clattering and moving all about in a frenzied mayhem that flailed and swept through the air up to ten feet away in all directions with a vengence. Each time the staff was triggered to produce one of these mechanical walls, that wall measured twenty feet in height and a hundred and fifty feet in length. The retrievers caught between the city's outer wall and the mechanical walls conjured, were mercilessly beaten and battered, while those on the outside within its reach were swatted away, though they attacked the walls with their eye rays in retaliation until a better means of circumventing the walls could be found.
Xukhezur decided that helping the locals would be the better course, if for nothing else that it would keep him better informed. For the time being, he'd forgo using his mecha effigy 'Shroud' due to its fearsome appearance, and instead followed a passing patrol of a dozen soldiers who were headed to help protect one of the main city gates. Meanwhile he telepathically bade two of his optic orb homunculi to patrol the city's perimeter, while keeping within the city itself, and to inform him of any approaching forces or unnatural developments. The remaining optic orb was assigned to keep an eye on the inner city, and the structures that contained the majority of noncombatants. When the soldiers arrived at the gate and ascended the walls, Xukhezur himself held back to keep a lookout for any ranking officers in the area, to whom he could try and listen, to get an idea of where things stood and what their general capacities were. He did his best to stay out of the way, but was ready in case he were called upon to identify himself and his state his purpose for being there.
My post is in there.
Xukhezur was already at the market, donned in an unremarkable dark gray hooded cloak, worn over his protomorphic jump suit and other attire. Hailing from the underdark of another world, he could be found on the surface just as often as below it, seeking information, potential clients or components for his projects. He was also something of an explorer and tradesman, normally looking to establish routes for his nation's satellite enclaves. Access to his own nation's warded and concealed capital was limited. Few foreigners had ever been allowed inside, transported there whilst under stasis and periodically wiped of memories involving classified and sensitive information when they no longer required such. As a result, departed visitors were left with recollections involving only the satellite enclaves they first visited, and redacted memories of relevant meetings they had attended while in the capital.

This visit to the world of Kurn however, involved seeking a band of thieves who'd happened upon and plundered a hidden armory cache belonging to his people. Possessed of moderate power and utility, the total number of these implements warranted a swift and vigilant pursuit and judicious capture of those responsible. Xukhezur had been remotely contacted several hours before, regarding the crime, and was assigned to peruse the markets of Lithium for any information regarding these items, to see if they'd passed through local hands or were being pawned off.

Meanwhile, three of his optic orb homunculi scouted the city, searching for signs of the stolen items, as well as signs of violence, potent magical phenomena and uncatalogued creatures that could serve as a basis for Xukhezur's next effigy. Each optic orb homunculus appeared as a dull mottled metallic sphere one inch in diameter, covered in a multitude of miniscule recessed mox gems, and moved itself by means of manipulating an aura of artifical gravity. Often rendered invisible by means of their innate magical abilities, these homunculi could often count on going unnoticed by most, save for prudent beings of sufficient means.

As the clouds gathered overhead, the lightning struck and companies of knights and soldiers were brought to attention and mobilized themselves, Xukhezur grimaced with mixed thoughts. A fierce battle or siege would hamper his investigations, although it would divide everyone's attention and might enable him to search otherwise inaccessible portions of the city. Although, if he offered his assistance to the people of this city, he might be able to garner favor in a manner that might help him come by more clients, trade contracts as well as informants that might lead him to the thieves.
XUKHEZUR KAVINATH (open to adjustments)

Xukhezur Kavinath (voice) is an arctic "grimaskari" mechamancer. He stands about three inches over six feet tall, with pale gray hairless skin, glossy black eyes, and a broad muscular build. He often conjures an articulated, form fitting suit of ablative, stabilized protomatter over an undershirt, breeches, knee high boots and fingerless leather gloves. He also wears a pocketed nightscale utility belt. In addition to the mecha constructs he often pilots from within, Xukhezur also employs several optic orb homunculi as a means of surveillance and exploration.

He is about thirty-five years of age, despite having been born almost a century ago. Upon acquiring and exercising the level of skill required to scribe a very particular and powerful scroll, he entrusted his mentor to cast its effect upon him and a well fashioned magic ring made of black dragonbone. He now shares a connection to this "Ring of Ages", allowing him to draw upon its strange, inanimate resilience whenever he wears it, in effect halting the aging process. This ring is virtually indestructible while he lives, but if separated from it, Xukhezur would be slightly weakened until he could reclaim it. However, thankfully the connection he shares with it would allow him to sense its location, wherever it might be if on the same plane.

Xukhezur can be hired to build or create a vast array of objects and devices for a prospective client, as a means of advancing his own projects, and has also taken to adventuring, contractual mission assignments and remote mercantile enclaves as a means of financing them. He loves the challenge and satisfaction he gets from accomplishing difficult and often risky tasks on behalf of his people. Raised in the reasonably comfortable household environment maintained by his parents, he took quickly to learning the skills of his father, Kavuzaar, until it was obvious he would need more advanced tutelage. He was approached and recruited as an apprentice within a few days of submitting his application to the various guilds of magical artifice. His new mentor, was a skilled artificer named Nur'Zod, who guided him for the next twenty years, as he developed his craft and tested their applications in the fields of exploration and combat.

In the decades since, his restless appetite for discovery has often led him far afield, beyond the comforts of his homeland. He lives to serve his people in an almost competitive manner, that he might occasionally return to present or demonstrate the products of his accomplishments in an open forum, and take in the welcoming praise and share accounts of his endeavors.

[ Medieval Fantasy Version ]
Xukhezur is also a planar explorer hailing from the city of Deep Imaskar on the world of Toril. From among his various creations, he often utilizes a mecha effigy construct simply dubbed "Shroud".
