Not only was it a period joke in poor taste, but it was presumptuous. She is upset for a perfectly good reason, and now you're experiencing the consequences of speaking out of turn. The most you can do is apologize, continue to admit you were wrong, and accept the irrefutable fact that her frustration with you is completely deserved. She deserves to be upset, and attempting to take it away from her because you apologized to a third party is also insulting. The worst part isn't making a period joke; it's speaking as an authority on someone else as if you know their personal feelings. You are not an authority on the feelings of others. It is not your place to speak for them. Perhaps, in future, you should better understand your limitations.
