shit, sorry I've been gone for a few days. I've just finished moving into my dorm room, but I should have a post up as soon as I catch up to everything I've missed!
The shuttle rattled and hummed as it came to a halt and slowly brought itself to ground. The doors slid open, and Coin stepped out, with her duffel bag and rifle case in hand. Her sidearm was holstered to her waist; for once, she was in military fatigues instead of a lab coat. The fatigues were customary for Coin every time she received a new assignment; she didn’t want to give off any wrong impressions. It had happened once during a reassignment. Coin had arrived at her new ship in her lab coat and the captain had screamed at her asking “what the fuck a fucking nerd is doing on his fucking ship” for about twenty minutes before someone alerted him to who she was. That was an unpleasant experience.

In any case, the fatigues were comforting. Coin was, by rights, just a Petty Officer in rank. However, her unique career choices meant Coin had, in a way, fallen out of traditional military progression. As a formality, Coin was given the rank of Commander. As such, she still served on ships and answered to a ship’s captain, but there weren’t too many people that she really had to report to. Of course, if you wanted to get technical, Coin operated almost entirely outside of a typical command structure.

Coin was welcomed by a tall Asian man in full dress; from the looks of it, an admiral. Coin smirked. Ooh, I’m important, she thought, setting her bags down saluting the admiral.

“At ease, Doctor. First things first, my name is Admiral Lin. I’ll be your point of contact in the human military during this assignment.” The admiral extended a hand, which Coin met apprehensively. She was still getting her bearings, and here was Admiral Lin who seemed about ready to slam her with information. He did not disappoint.

“Second thing you need to know is that you have been selected to join an inter-species initiative. To keep it simple, this team is going to be under Assembly jurisdiction and your primary objective, to my knowledge, will be to maintain galactic stability.” Coin nodded. She had figured as much.

“Last thing is that you are the only member of humanity coming from our military, and even that’s a stretch. You and I both know that you’re not exactly a standard example of a human soldier. Regardless, do your best to place our military in a positive light. That shouldn’t be a problem for you” The admiral paused, letting Coin wrap her head around the information. “Any questions, Doctor?”

Coin folded her arms. That last bit caught her by surprise. She hadn’t really expected to be the only representative of humanity’s military, nor did she consider herself to be the best representative. To start, she could be lazy, didn’t really have much respect for a command structure, and had little tolerance for stupid people that couldn’t do their jobs properly. But, the admiral hadn’t said that she was the only human on the team, so at least she wasn’t representing all of humanity by herself. That was reassuring.

Ultimately, Coin shook her head no. “No questions, sir. Where do I report?”

The admiral motioned to another shuttle waiting about a hundred feet away from them. “Take that shuttle to the Bureau of Joint Intelligence. Leave your bags in the shuttle; we’ll take care of it. There’s going to be a meeting in two days; until then get comfortable and we’ll fill you in as you go.” Coin took the hint; the admiral didn’t know what the hell was going to happen beyond that. She nodded, picking up her bags from the ground. As she turned to go, the admiral spoke up again. “And, Doctor?” Coin stopped, turning to face him once more. “Lose the fatigues and wear a lab coat. You don’t need to worry about giving off the wrong impression.” The admiral grinned, and walked off towards the hangar’s exit.

“Yes, sir,” Coin smirked, heading to the shuttle.

--

When Coin disembarked from the shuttle the second time around, she was in her typical lab outfit; white lab coat, white tank top, and cargo pants. She took a moment to straighten herself out, clean her glasses, and fix her hair before entering the Bureau’s lobby.

The first thing Coin took note of was the bizarre architectural design. Most buildings adopted the cultural stylings of whatever race the building belonged to, but the Bureau seemed to try to take the best of each race and mesh it into one combined style. It wasn’t pretty.

The second thing she noticed was that she was not the first one to arrive. Two Rothians, two Masulu, and two Dirophyds. She overheard one of the Rothians ask about the meeting. Well, at least she was in the right place.

Coin couldn’t help but feel out of her element. She was on an unknown world, surrounded by people - hell, species - that she didn’t know, on an assignment that was more or less ‘play nice with the aliens.’ Sure, she had studied all these cultures pretty rigorously in college, but reading a book and listening to a college professor drone on about aliens couldn’t hold a candle to firsthand experience with aliens.

Coin inched towards the small group that was forming in the center of the room, eyeing the Dirophyd in the corner in her peripheral vision. She leaned in slightly, folding her hands behind her back. “I’m guessing this is where the party’s starting? I think we’re all here for the same thing, right? I’m Natalia. You can call me Coin,” she smiled warmly, tossing a small wave to the group. The nerves were killing her, and she hoped it wasn’t showing.
still here, sorry! been kind of procrastinating my post for a while... I'll try to put it up tonight.
(damn double posts they make me so sad)
There was a moment of silence as Amanda considered the proposition. She was surprised - not by the idea of selling the cells, but more because the idea seemed to come from Chris. She straightened out her posture, taking her legs off the couch. "I've thought about that myself a couple times, but the biggest problem I've run into is getting that number of power cells out into any legal market." Amanda rose from the couch, stretching her arms as she did so.

"Shipments that big will be a giant red flag to any company selling power cells like the ones we've got. As soon as we get to the space elevator, we'll have customs flagging us as a safety hazard since those cells don't exactly meet quality standards. Don't get me wrong, most of those cells are usable, but once they fail a quality check in the factory, they're completely written off. And corporations will do anything to keep those cells out of the market," Amanda explained. "Unless we want to spend a few weeks fighting an uphill legal battle to get those cells to the surface, it's not going to happen. Now, even if we do manage to get the cells through, we've got a big problem with distribution. How do we plan on selling a million crystal power cells on our own?" Amanda let the rhetorical question sink in for a few seconds. She smirked; Julius had asked about legality, but Amanda was fairly certain he already knew exactly what her suggestion would be.

"The fastest and most profitable way to get these cells off our hand is through the black market. We avoid the legal issue of bringing in sub-standard cells and the logistic issue of distributing them." Amanda pulled up her datapad, fiddling around with it while she spoke. "Of course, we lose a cut of whatever profits the cells bring in to the mules that get the cells to Earth and the distributors that take care of getting the cells out to the market, but if we play our cards right..." She looked up from the datapad. "We can still reel in a hefty sum for those cells. I've just sent you a list of people on the station that can get this done for us. These are all people I've worked with before; they can get the cells sold for a good amount, depending on the country they're selling to. It's my understanding that Eastern Europe and North Africa are currently suffering from power cell monopolies and are interested in alternative power cell supplies," Amanda gave Julius a sly grin.

Crunching the numbers in her head quickly, she figured they could get the cells off at about ten credits apiece at best. Considering probably only half of the cells were actually usable and accounting for maybe a fifty percent deduction for the smuggling fee and the distribution fee... best case scenario, Amanda reasoned they could make a good couple million credits or so from the power cells. Not bad at all. Hell, that was a lot better than that bullshit one hundred thousand credit deal Julius had found for scrapping the cells. She resolved to find Chris later and see what other ideas were running around in his head that could bring in that kind of cash.
The mission sounded simple enough, but the Argonian, Ukaraz, was a strong reminder of why Alareine preferred being the lone scout. Working in teams was effective when, well, the team stayed a team. Arnand's forwardness didn't help Alareine feel any better; Alareine shifted uncomfortably in response to the nudge. His comment about money bothered her slightly; she had little trust for mercenaries. However, she'd give Arnand the benefit of the doubt; after all, he hadn't run off like Ukaraz, and seemed to mean well. Rosenna appeared decent enough, but Alareine found it difficult to read the woman. Alareine fumbled around with her hands for a bit after everyone had introduced themselves, before realizing that it only made sense that she did, as well.

"Oh. I'm Alareine Arysden. I'm a ranger, of sorts..." Alareine drifted off weakly. She seemed to stumble over her own words, glancing about awkwardly. Alareine hesitated before speaking up again. "We should get moving. That Ukaraz seems like bad news and I don't like him. I'm sure he's already taken the map from the inn, so I would steal the map from him and go on without him. He will bring us down and hand the Crown to the Stormcloaks." Alareine nodded to herself slowly, and motioned towards Whiterun. She remembered briefly that the Legate had mentioned that they could barter for supplies in town; Alareine had no need for supplies, as she had her weapons and could hunt and cook food on her own, though she wasn't sure if Arnand or Rosenna would need supplies.
Amanda shot a friendly smile at Yasha. She’d dealt with his type before and worse. Hell, there were guys on the crew worse than him. “This ‘pretty little limey’ quite likes this tin can, and I’ve served on many tin cans before this one.” She gave him a piercing stare before turning to Isam. “I’m sure we’ll all get along nicely. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I should go settle in. I do have things to do, boys. Come find me if you have any questions,” Amanda glanced at each of the newcomers one at a time, “or if you just need a friendly face to talk to. I’m always available.” She nodded, excusing herself from the group. She tossed her cigarette butt behind her as she walked away.

Amanda headed towards her cabin. To her surprise, she didn’t run into any of the other crew members on the way. When she arrived, she opened the small cabinet in her room, making sure her belongings were still there. There had been... incidents in the past. She rummaged through her things, going through a short checklist in her head. Everything was accounted for.

She left her room and moved up to the rec room. Amanda lit a cigarette and sat down on the couch, throwing her legs up on the couch. She pulled out a datapad, filtering through her messages. Amanda sorted through them; most of her messages were business offers for her to run through Julius, but there was still a fair amount of spam and sales advertisements. Amanda sighed; you’d think that after so many years of electronic messaging, there’d be a more efficient way of filtering through the bullshit.
I- oh. okay, well, I'm working on a few posts for a number of RP's right now so I'm not sure if I'll get to this one or not. might be better if one of us just timeskips ahead somewhere now.
I'll have a post up soon! I've been out all day and I just got home.
I think I'm gonna do a little bit of both, actually. more fun, that way. thanks!
