The Report Button is my friend. The Report Button is my friend. The Report Button is my friend. q.qI don't venture into 1x1 anymore. Because it was back to being smut within minutes of Guild being back up. People are still asking for "Mature" "romance" RPs. They still have their check list of "preferable" characters their "partner" plays. And I see no other solution than to remove the entire section. *coughs* Its not a Hook-Up Site for fictional fantasies.

Sometimes I go in there out of boredom. Sometimes I try to take it seriously. I can't.

Me.

That's saying something!

Nanotechnology, fusion power and solar panels as far as the eye can see. Sounds like a wonderful future.

We should shove towards a space race for the asteroid belt (there's enough resources in there to last us pretty much indefinitely and we can throw them into Earth's orbit then drop them down onto the planet for quintessentially limitless gathering with minimal effort) and a fully automated economy while we're at it.

Because at that point, we can do whatever we like and things will be fine. We'll have solved the two most pressing issues for a functional socialism.

...It's getting there that's going to be the pain in the ass. Until then, capitalism and science, all the way, and in the near future, that includes oil. A lot of oil. Even if we don't use it in power, we'll still use it for plastics. All the plastics.
The Nexerus said ^ What if what you're telling someone they can't do or be is itself infringing upon the rights of others?

Simple answer: A right is guaranteed for a sentient entity so long as it does not infringe upon another sentient entity's rights and freedoms, whereupon ultimately what is determined to be an infringement is settled in a court of law based on the most reasonable answers on what information is available on a case by case basis, where the defendant is innocent until proven guilty.

It is a complex system in which the largest amounts of rights and freedoms are handed out where it is possible and for all parties equally--white or black, man or woman, left or right wing, but otherwise, the premise is pretty simple: You're allowed to own a gun, you're not allowed to steal a gun from someone else (infringing on their right to private ownership) or to shoot someone else with that gun except in self-defense (infringing on the right to live).

Is it perfect? No. Is it admirable and the closest thing we have to a moral system that allows the largest variety of people--majorities and minorities alike--to coexist as equals? Yes.

EDIT

Though I actually disagree with Tempest about taxing corporations--corporate taxes do nothing to large corps and hurt small businesses. Large corporations just pass the tax along to the consumer. Lets say there's a bread tax that taxes every loaf of bread one dollar--major corporations who make and sell bread will simply increase the price of bread by one dollar and ten cents (because anytime they think they can cut the consumer to bleed them for profits, they will, not particularly evil, just coldly efficient.) Meanwhile the small business has a harder time competing with the larger one because now they have to increase prices to match the corporation taxation, which in turn drives more customers away from them and towards large corporations.

Corporate taxes don't work. We simply have them now because it's another way to tax the individual citizen through large corporations and take as much from small businesses as possible... Because for some reason, your country likes to run its tax system like a business... It makes no sense to me. I don't think your government has any idea what it wants to do with taxes or what it even can do with taxes. I agree that its highly corrupt and run by a bunch of Neanderthals in suits--half of which are probably senile or raging homophobes in the closet.
Generally speaking, every character should be thread specific. You can reuse an old idea, but it should always be modified to fit the thread. Otherwise you're not conforming to the GM's requirements, which is just bad and inconsiderate.

Oooh! Neato science!

More methods to fix problems is never an issue in my mind. Maybe they could use artificial genes to cure genetic disorders. Exciting!

As for humanity playing God, we have been already. It's called modern medicine.
@Alfhedil: Funny, I've never been able to find a 1x1 partner that didn't completely rely on me for story information, try to dominate the story completely themselves, or solicited me for sex. Meanwhile, both in advanced and casual, I've found consistently good groups and players.

Also, 1x1 isn't more "pure" either concerning role playing. It's just a different format of the same thing. Different flavour, same food.

Perhaps it is more deeply entrenched than I suspect, but I only ever bring this smugness out in a debate like this which requires one to keep a certain level of detachment and a facade of superiority and disinterest <-- officially my favourite, smuggest smiley of all time. Come RP with me sometime and you'll find me to be very unsmug and uncondescending.

Busy with my own, but thanks. :p
Hm. I see a lot of people commenting on food that is treated bad tastes bad, and, um, no. That's not what I meant to convey.

What I meant to convey, is that if the quality of life of the animals is so absolutely abysmal and poor that they cannot even achieve basic hygienic standards, that's a problem, because thousands will die wasted and diseases will run rampant. The more diseases run rampant, the greater the evolutionary potential of each one, which in turn means the greater the chance one will jump species and hit us next. So from a purely, coldly logical point of view, we don't have to be "nice" to them to justify increasing QoL. We only have to keep the QoL above the "worse than Africa" line to keep us safe.

Beyond that, it's totally and entirely personal preference, whether or not that fits into your moral guidelines is irrelevant in the equation because we're also the ones keeping the majority of them alive.

As for wild animals, depends. If they're endangered, sure, try to save em', cuz' biodiversity is a wonderful thing and a healthy thing. However, if we held that "no hunting" policy that the film asks for, deer and rabbits would overrun everything, increase predator populations, then deplete their own resource, starve to death, and then go extinct when the overabundant predator population goes wild on them while they're all starving to death.

Yes, we fucked up mother nature, but we're part of mother nature. Guess what? We're simply on top. Of course we're affecting every food chain and every area of the planet: We live and dominate over every fucking part of the planet. The best thing we can do is get involved in our own environment and try to produce one that benefits us the most, because that usually involves at least keeping a species alive so it can keep doing whatever it does that we find useful...
