Bruce sidled up behind Luke and Jenso, inspecting the paintings from a distance. He swept his eyes down toward the end of the hall and the carvings, curious as to the prevalent theme of flames. He glanced at Jenso- Bruce had his own skepticism about prophecy and predetermined events, but his beliefs had been challenged many times already in his life.
'But more important,' he thought, narrowing his eyes. 'Why doesn't there seem to be anyone around?'
Bruce had to agree with Luke, but he couldn't help that his lips quirked upwards at Jenso's enthusiastic optimism. While the prospect of encountering more people capable of robbing his powers did unsettle him, it also presented a new challenge to overcome, and he would not be daunted.
"Yes," he said. "We will be not be caught unawares a second time."
Another idea occurred to him.
"Luke," he said, letting his fingers skirt the walls. "Do we know where in this structure we need to head to?"
Bruce caught his breath as his powers returned to his body. It had been a simultaneously exhilarating and nerve-wracking experience to have them robbed from him, despite having lived a good portion of his life as a fairly normal person. Once he gathered himself, he thought to snap the spearheads off the staves that had been left on the ground, lining his waistband with them on the side opposite his sheath.
Being better prepared for another surprise like this might make the difference in carrying out their mission. As he thought about it, he turned and looked after where the last archer had fled.
"We likely need to keep moving quickly," he said. "Chances are the one that got away will ensure that our presence is no longer secret."
At the same time that Jenso went for attacking the two men that were still standing, Bruce leapt toward one of them, intent on catching him in a sleeper hold that, if not render him unconscious, would at least make it that much easier for Jenso's assault to work.
Bruce noted the archers overhead. Without his powers, he had no reliable way to ascend up there on his own. Still, the thrill kept him light of foot and focused. He immediately twirled one spear over his head while he ran to deflect incoming arrows. At the same time, he flung the other spear low to the ground such that it spun rapidly, aiming to again trip up the four going for Jenso while he moved to intercept them.
Bruce leaned forward into a headlong sprint, eyes narrowed, spears held parallel to his arms behind him. He couldn't help but feel invigorated despite having lost the surplus of energy he had in the form of ki. These tunnelers lived their lives with only their magic to make the fights closer to even.
At the last moment, he tucked and rolled under their staves, bringing both spears in front of him sideways to push their weapons upward, aiming to set them off balance for a moment.
'This will make things more difficult,' Bruce thought, rolling along the ground to take up one of the spears that had been thrown. He snatched one up in his hand, hurling another toward one of the two magic users, and finally filling his other hand with the third. He spun them at his sides in a display part intimidation, but largely to show the three headed toward him that he was hardly helpless.
'But far from impossible.'
Bruce sprinted ahead, skirting his fingers along the ground. He focused hard, changing the form and consistency of the earth under them into a mud wall, aiming to negate the power of the spears and avoid alerting anyone else nearby by muffling any impact they might make. Before the wall cut off his sight of the three that had thrown their weapons, he broke off pieces of the mud wall and propelled them toward their faces, hoping to strike each of them in their eyes and rob them of their sight momentarily before he moved to take them out.
Bruce kept his cool during the murmured, if heated, exchange between father and son. He considered Jenso's opinions, but he couldn't think of anything to back them up or how they could help them.
"Given that we know nothing of this voodoo magic they use," he said, keeping his voice low. "We have to assume that anything other than permanently disabling the guard is too much of a risk. The fact that the patrol is a child is just an unfortunate circumstance."
Bruce didn't enjoy taking life any more than Jenso did, but when he weighed the consequences of taking one child's life against the failure of their mission, he saw no reason for hesitation.
