Because it allows for a persistent large group chat and it's less shitty than Tinychat and the various other instant messenger programs out there (mainly due to the integration of voice chat that actually works well). The only thing TC has over Skype is the video playing thing, and that isn't really worth the garbage character limit and the lag and so forth.

I just hate skype, I'm almost never on my own computer, and you can't put skype on a school computer.
