“Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives.”
Carl Sagan, Pale Blue Dot: A Vision of the Human Future in Space
Earth has been the only home we've known. Most people say that Earth is not the center of the Universe. Though this is true, it is not for those who grow up on it. Those who live their entire lives on this little blue and green marble floating through space around a large, orange dodge ball. When we first visited our own Moon, we had achieved a step greater than just what we believe. For once we knew more than just our home. We knew of her partner and life long friend who has existed for nearly as long as she has. Sending rovers to Mars a step greater than even going to the moon. Now we knew of one of our neighbors.
But what does this mean for us if we know only our neighborhood? Sure we've sent out ships and used massive cameras to take pictures of the world outside of our neighborhood but this means nothing to us if all we can do is look at them in wonder. It is claimed that seeing is believing but I claim that believing isn't just seeing. It has everything to do with touching, being there in person, smelling the flowers, and being able to experience it for yourself. That is how we as humans believe in something. We let our bodies do it for us.
Our goal here was not to advance into and settle our own solar system. No, that is for other teams and projects. Here, on this very day a twenty years ago, we began the monumental project of designing and building the very first ship meant for travel beyond our solar system. And we did it. In three weeks our spaceship,
Destiny, will make its voyage into space and will be out of our solar system in a month after. And tonight I say we toast to family, friends, science, and the most important of all of them,
to Space.
So, you are probably questioning quite a bit of stuff right now. What is this roleplay? Who are we suppose to be? When is this? How advanced is technology? All these are viable questions to ask. This roleplay will be exploring the effect of space travel beyond Earth on the human psyche. The characters will be people from all walks of life who have volunteered or been hired to go on the voyage of the ship
Destiny. Technology is currently at the point that large scale terraforming is definitely possible. But the focus of this roleplay won't be on the tech nor is it about nothing but action, though there will probably be a few moments where there will be quite a bit of action going on. The whole point of this roleplay is to experience how the characters will react to being in space and far away from Earth. So, if anybody is interested, do express your interest and after four or five people show interest I will get the OOC up and running.
