The conversation had drove to a halt as the local news had appeared to briefly give out an official update to Roland and Avery‘s previous location earlier, claiming that Avery was released out of hospital care and sent to a foster care facility.

“Well would you look at that,” exclaimed Steven, “She’s making the headlines. Just think now, she’s going to be one of the biggest things to happen at our school. Seriously, nothing this big has ever hit our town before…or at least in the case of violence that is.”

Steven seemed to be thrilled with all of what was being announced, but Roland just shook his head without saying a word, focusing on what other topics were to be revealed on the broadcast. He looked over to Avery, finding her sound asleep next to him, looking peaceful. He smiled a bit, but the smile quickly went away with the next report being revealed.

The news announced just after that a cop was just killed by a brutal strangulation from none other than the man who was placed in jail not long ago, revealing to be Avery’s father as the report led on to claim he had escaped prison.

Knowing all of this had Roland in shock. He knew what his plans were, who he was going to look for, and what he could do to get her back, and it made him start to worry not only for Avery’s safety, but for the Noonan’s, his other family, and what would result if they were found by the recent escapee.

Though Roland wasn’t the only to witness this unpleasant story, Steven’s reaction was just about the same as they both stared at the television with an upsetting look on their faces.

“That’s bad, isn’t it?” questioned Steven, once thrilled but now worried as he turned to Roland.

“I would say so,” replied Roland with a tone of fear.

“Avery,” exclaimed Mrs. Noonan as she called for Avery to inform her on the room being ready, “Avery? The room is ready for you sweetheart.”

Roland couldn’t really move himself, couldn’t think or say anything, just sitting there as he wondered where would Avery’s father go. Where would he try to look? Or a better question….

Where is he now?
It’s if as though Avery seemed more calm when the Noonan’s told her that everything was going to adjust and get better, and in doing so, she was constantly thanking them for all the things they have done for her so far, and for what’s to come.

Addressing Mrs. Noonan with the reporters, she knew for a fact that it would cause more of a stir if they had gotten their hands onto Avery, which would make more matters worse for her.

“I know you’re scared sweetheart,” said Mrs. Noonan to Avery, looking over to her husband to notify him with the problem as well, “Maybe we can find someway to keep them away from here, but I wouldn’t know how.”

“We’ll find someway….eventually,” said Mr. Noonan, scratching the back of his head as he replied.

Avery even addressed Steven on him not being a sort of role model, explaining that their meetings seemed of an annoyance to him. Though he knew it was the truth, he didn’t want to say anything due to embarrassment, so he kept quiet and continued to what he was doing.

But out of all of it, Roland could see that Avery had felt safe as she thanked them once more before laying her head down onto his shoulder. Though he wasn’t really sure if she was going to sleep, he knew she was very tired and wore out.

“Can I ask you guys a favor?” said Roland to Mr. and Mrs. Noonan quietly whispering, “Could you guys fix up my room very quick so I can bring Avery in there to go to sleep?”

“Yeah, sure” replied Mr. Noonan, “Just give me a couple of minutes. I assume your room isn’t too much of a mess is it?”

“It shouldn’t be,” giggled Roland a little bit, “Not like Steven’s room I’m sure.”

As Mr. Noonan walked out of the main room, headed to Roland’s bedroom to fix up his bed, Mrs. Noonan walked out as well and headed straight into the kitchen, leaving Steven, Roland and Avery by themselves in the living room.

“Her dad, he’s in jail now isn’t he?” questioned Steven, “Or is he out running the streets in hiding, avoiding the police stuff?”

Though Roland knew that Avery’s father would stop at no ends to retrieve her back into his possession, he felt that with the help and support of the Noonan’s, plus the security of the cops, she would be much more distant and safer away from him. Though the media said he was in prison, he could find any way to escape at any time, which could mean trouble for everyone involved.

“The media announced that he was caught and thrown in jail,” said Roland to Steven, “But honestly, I’m not entirely sure. It’s kind of frightening to think on it.”

“But,” said Steven with a smirk on his face, “You would have to admit it’s kind of exciting too.”

Roland looked at Steven as if he had lost his mind, shaking his head as he continued on the subject. “No Steven. None of this is exciting. If you’ve only heard the things he did to Avery, how they both lived and how she was treated. It’s nowhere near exciting. It’s horrible.”
As the family tried to make Avery feel more welcome and accepted in the household, she had explained to them how she was not used to any sort of concern to her well-being from others. She talked about her fear of people and her parents, mainly her father, but mentioned her meeting with Roland and how determined he was to talk to her.

Once Roland heard he was mentioned, a smirk rose upon his face.

Avery then discussed her clothing issue, stating that her normal attire consisting of her sweater, jeans and wore out shoes were basically gone.

“Don’t you worry on that sweetheart,” said Mrs. Noonan, replying quickly after Avery finished talking, “First thing we plan to do for you is clothes shopping, and you can pick and choose whatever you would like.”

As Mrs. Noonan stood back up straight on her feet, Roland noticed a bit more of ease and less pain in his arm, realizing Avery was starting to feel a bit more relaxed. Afterwards, Avery began to apologize, telling them she was acting nervous and stated that she never had grew up with great role models.

The Noonan’s and Roland began to laugh after they were called role models. None of them had ever considered of ever thought of being worthy to be called such, but it was very nice of her to say.

“You don’t have to apologize Avery,” said Mr. Noonan, “It’s ok. We just want you to feel at home is all, and we are going to help you in every possible way we can.”

“Yeah,” said Steven abruptly joining in the conversation with a pleasant look, “Though it isn’t very often to be called a role model.”

Roland had looked over to Steven, giving him an awkward expression, with Steven looking back at Roland confused.

“What?” said Steven.

“Either way,” began Roland, looking back over to Avery, “We’re here for you Avery. Don’t ever feel like you can’t talk to us about anything. Me, Mr. and Mrs. Noonan, we will help you with anything you ask.”

Roland knew that it would take time for her adjustment into a new lifestyle, especially being placed into a new family, but he knew in the back of his head that everything will work out. He felt that everything eventually will be ok, and that Avery could one day become a happier person, hopefully, but only time would tell.
As Avery awoke, her voice speaking in tiresome grievance as she complained about waking up, everyone in the room stood and watch as she opened her eyes and wondered of what her reaction was going to be. Once she looked around and noticed all eyes were on her, an expression of worry developed onto her as she nervously spoke to Mrs. Noonan, telling her hello.

“You must be Avery,” said Mrs. Noonan with a sweet smile across her face, “I’ve heard many things about you. How are you feeling sweetheart?”

Roland had hoped that Mrs. Noonan’s cheerful and bright personality would bring Avery a bit more comfort, but instead she was hesitant. She gripped Roland’s arm very tight and asked what was she suppose to do next.

He knew that she was scared, mainly because of the gripping pain he was feeling in his arm, but he didn’t want her to feel this way.

“Tell her whatever you feel,” he said to her, “Just be honest with us so that we can help you. Nobody is here to hurt you Avery.”

As Mr. Noonan kept quiet and Steven focusing back onto the television, Mrs. Noonan leaned down to lower herself into Avery’s position. While on one knee, she reached out to grab Avery’s hand gently, trying to comfort her and tell her that everything would be ok.

“I know you’ve been through a lot of pain,” she said softly, “But nobody is going to bring harm to you sweetie. Everything you have been through can be forgotten because you’ve been giving a chance at a better life with us, and we are going help you in any possible way we can. It might take a while, and I can understand that, but just be open with us so that we can help you.”
Avery seemed a bit surprised, or at least that’s how it felt as she kept her tight grip onto Roland’s arm. Maybe it was because of Steven, actually being nice instead of having an ill-mannered attitude towards her that it seemed shockingly different to her, even though his sense of humor was still idiotically present.

She agreed to take the offer and sit down, though she held close to Roland still, though he could understand as to why of course.

“All right,” said Roland to her as he took it upon himself to lead her to the couch. Her grip was still intact with his arm, but she followed and found her spot to seat herself upon and relax, him sitting next to her afterwards. Once they were both seated, she rested her head onto his shoulder, staying quiet.

“Good,” said Steven as he was smiling, “Now that we are all settled, let’s see what happens next.”

“How about some television?” said Roland, “I know you’ve been gaming ever since you got back here after school. Besides, maybe Avery wants to watch something.”

As soon as he said that, he looked next to him only to find that Avery had fell asleep. Knowing she has been having a rough time, and just getting out of a difficult situation, he understood that she was very tired, so he didn’t say a word about it. Steven on the other hand…….

“Well would you look at that,” said Steven, leaning frontward’s to see that Avery fell asleep on Roland’s shoulder, giving a goofy look, “Looks like she wanted to hit the hay a little early. You know what that means?”

“It means you’re nerve-racking,” said Roland, looking at Steven with a sarcastic smile, turning away afterwards rolling his eyes.

A couple of minutes afterwards, Mr. and Mrs. Noonan came into the main room to check if everything was ok, and of course for Mrs. Noonan to meet Avery.

“Is everything ok in here,” asked Mrs. Noonan.

“Fine,” said Steven, focusing on his game while replying, “Though it seems someone is becoming a bit tempered with me for no apparent reason.”

“Steven is acting like usually does. An idiot,” said Roland as he replied to Mrs. Noonan’s question, “But the person I wanted you to meet is in dreamland right now.”

“Oh,” replied Mrs. Noonan, “Well let her rest for now. I don’t want to wake her up. The poor girl.”

“You should have seen the hospital,” followed up Mr. Noonan, finding his way into the conversation, “It was nonstop. Photographers and cameramen all over the place. Reporters trying to get inside, pushing and shoving. All of that just to see one little girl about her abusive lifestyle.”

“Oh my goodness,” said Mrs. Noonan after hearing of the events near the emergency room, “It must have been a big deal if there was people shoving each other to get inside.”

“Basically because it’s the biggest thing to happen to happen in our boring town,” said Steven.

“Avery?” said Roland, trying to wake up Avery once more so that she could meet Mrs. Noonan.
As Avery ran up to them, grabbing a tight hold onto Roland’s arm, the three of them were ready to head inside. Though he could sense that Avery still felt anxious with everything happening so sudden, Roland wanted to make sure that she was eased away of agitation, and wanted her to feel more secure.

She had spoke up before they went inside, telling them of how scared she was of meeting Mrs. Noonan and continuously thinking of becoming a burdening problem with the family.

“You’re worrying too much,” said Roland, trying to keep her calm, “Nobody here is going to think of you as a problem. We did this because you deserve a better life than the one you were living.”

“Exactly,” said Mr. Noonan, following up to Roland’s statement, smiling at the girl, “You won’t be a hassle of any sort, I guarantee you. You are part of this family now, and you’ll be treated just as good as Roland and Steven, I can promise you that.”

As the door opened, they went indoors, finding that the main room was being occupied by Steven, sitting on the sofa playing a video game, and Mrs. Noonan going across with a basket full of laundry.

Once they were inside though, Roland felt the fear from Avery suddenly increasing as she grasped his arm tighter. She told him of how different it was from last time, stating how scared and nervous she was.

“I’ll be back in here in a minute kids,” said Mr. Noonan as he started walking off, “I’m going to talk to Mrs. Noonan real quick.”

As he had left, Roland stood there with Avery, not wanting her to feel the need to panic and be worried. As she kept a grasp onto his arm, Steven looked away from the television and stared at the two of them just standing there.

“You guys do know that you can sit down, right?” said Steven, giggling as he thought how silly the two of them looked just standing awkwardly, “These couches aren’t contaminated with anything, or are they?”

“Avery, do you want to take a seat,” asked Roland, seeing if she would feel better if she would sit down.

“Yeah Avery, come on and join the party,” said Steven, trying his best to be humorous, “There is plenty of love to go around.”

As Roland rolled his eyes, thinking how much of an idiot Steven is, he awaited to see what Avery wanted to do, hoping that someway she could be less anxious and more relaxed whatever she chose to do.
As they both watched Avery awaken, she became questioned the moment her eyes opened, finding out that they were already home. Mr. Noonan smiled and replied.

“It doesn’t take very long from here to the hospital,” he said, “Plus, I was going a little faster than usual. Thankfully, the police wasn’t around.”

Roland slightly laughed, finding Mr. Noonan to be funny once he explained how they arrived so quickly. Just after, Avery showed no hesitation and took off her seatbelt, suggesting that they hurry and get inside before they get caught by the news media, so Roland did just that as he opened his door and took off his seatbelt as well.

Once he was out, he stretched out for a minute to get himself more flexible and keep awake so that he could at least make it indoors. As him and Mr. Noonan began to walk towards the front door of their house, Roland looked behind to see if Avery was following along, but instead she just stood next to the car.

“You coming Avery?” said Roland to Avery.
Time flew by as the drive back home was becoming close to it’s end, though things were going to be very hectic once they return safely. Mr. Noonan knew that arrangements were to be made and a family meeting to come along as well, yet he wasn’t too worried on how things would play out. His main focus right now was to get themselves home safe and sound.

A minute later, he made a quick turn and slowly went forward as his home came into view. Be pulled over to the curb and stopped, gently removing his seatbelt and letting out a slow sigh, glad that they were able to make it back home without a hoard of news reporters stalking behind them.

“Hey you two,” he said looking through the rearview mirror, “We’re home.”

Finding that the both of them had decided to take a nap, he got out of the car and stepped over to Roland’s door, checking first to see if he was resting his head on the car door, and opened it lightly once confirmed he wasn’t.

“Roland?” said Mr. Noonan as he gently shook the boy to wake him up, “Wake up Roland. We’re home, safe and sound.”

As Roland rubbed his weary eyes, he leaned up and took a look to find out that they made it back. He yawned and stretched himself out quickly, afterwards replying to Mr. Noonan.

“We are?” said Roland with a tiresome voice, “Awesome. Now I can take a nap.”

“Hold off on that,” said Mr. Noonan with a light chuckle, “Let’s worry about getting Avery inside first and get everything settled.”

Roland looked over to the side to find that Avery had fallen asleep as well. It was of no surprise after that she had been going through, but his main concern was to get her indoors before anything else was to happen.

“Avery?” he said tiresomely, lightly grabbing her arm and shaking her gently to get her awake, “We’re here. You have to wake up now.”
Once Avery grabbed for Roland’s hand once more, they wasted no time as they quickly dashed outside and straight forward towards the vehicle awaiting them. Once they were near, Roland reached for the handle and yanked open the door leading to the backseats of the car, holding it open and letting Avery go inside first, him following quickly right behind her and closing the door and locking it once done.

“You both settled in?” said Mr. Noonan viewing them through the rear view mirror, his foot on the gas pedal ready to drive out back onto the road.

“Yeah,” replied Roland, “Good to go.”

And just like that, Mr. Noonan took little to no time and began to navigate the car away from the hospital and back on the road. Luckily, none of the news and media had appeared or were in the way, so they could drive safely back and remain undetected without any hassle.

As they hit the main road and began to ride home, Avery’s curiosity was wondering as to how Roland gained some sort of wisdom from the way news anchors and media had worked, so she decided to ask him about it. Once she asked him, he looked at her, dazed for a moment as he wasn’t certain as what to say. His focus was concentrated on being back home, relieved that they got out of the hospital without being brutalized by a bunch of people constantly asking questions to Avery all at once in a crowd.

“Oh, um….” said Roland, trying to think on how to answer the question, but he felt too weary to do so.

“It’s a long story Avery,” said Mr. Noonan, answering for Roland as he continued driving, “He’s told me all about it before when he came to live with us. From the sound of it, he sounds sleepy. Best ask him a little later on when he’s more awake.”

“I-I’m sorry Avery,” said Roland with his tiresome tone, hoping that Avery wouldn’t be upset with him.

“We will be at the house in a few,” said Mr. Noonan, “We will get everything settled once there, alright?”
It was time to leave. No hesitation was shown as Roland was ready to leave the hospital, hopefully to make it back in one peace and not be seen or near another hospital again. As they began to make their leave, he noticed something as he was walking.

Looking behind him, he looked down at his hand to find that Avery had a hold of it. He couldn’t believe it himself at first, mainly due to dealing with her frightened personality and not able to trust people, but it seemed as if she finally decided to trust the boy. As he turned his face back to the front to see where they were being lead, he smiled, happy to know that he was finally beginning to earn her trust.

Towards the front of the hospital, Mr. Noonan peacefully made his way out and wasted no time to head to his car, that is until an officer had appeared and began to walk with him, showing that it was more of an escort. The officer told Mr. Noonan that he should take the long way to the back, this way none of the news reporters or their camera crew would be liable to see him and get in the way.

“I will do as you say,” said Mr. Noonan as he got into his car and started up the engine, “Just make sure none of them see me leaving the parking lot. Any one of them could come around the building and spot me heading towards the back.”

After starting up his car, he placed it into drive and slowly began to drive near the back on the more distant route, beforehand rolling down his window and giving courtesy to the officer for his help. “Much appreciated officer,” he said.

Back in the hospital, Avery and Roland had finally reached the back doorway. The only thing left for them to do was to get in the car quickly as they could and all would be done and over with, but first they had to wait for Mr. Noonan to come along. Instead, they stood patiently and waited for his arrival, being handed drinks by the nurse while doing so.

Roland opened his drink and took a quick sip as he awaited for Mr. Noonan to appear, watching with a sharp eye so that they could get out as fast as possible. As quiet as the wait was, Avery decided to speak up in related terms of the people they were trying to keep distance from, saying that she wanted the press to leave her alone and that there is more important stuff to worry about than her or her father.

“Sadly, they won’t stop,” said Roland to Avery, “These reporters and news anchors only care about getting the biggest story going on locally. Whatever helps them catch that big break, they will do everything they can to get a hold of your story. Trust me when I say that I know.”

Just after, a car had suddenly appeared, showing Mr. Noonan waving to them inside the hospital and telling them to hurry on outside and get in.

“Looks like our ride is here,” said Roland, chuckling as he reached his hand out to Avery once more, “Come on Avery. Let’s get out of here and go home.”
