why do I feel like all the people claiming to be the ones with advantages would die right away.

You can feel as prepared as you like but you only really know how you'll act in these kind of situations once you get out there. I know survival skills count for a lot, but it's not just about that.

Plus it depends on whether the game will include the same functions that force people into confrontations as the actual HG did.
