That depends. Are you using cannon weapons? how closely are you going to refrence this game? and how strongly will its storyline affect your style of play?
If you answered yes to the first question, then no.
If you answered 'if you played the game you'll understand" to the second one, then no.
If you answered "Plot based quests will probably play some part in my history/bio" then no.

So, you can use say a D&D char, or something and whenever you cast a spell you explain what the hell the effects are I probably won't care. However if you pick say...a fable 1 char and reference the Archdeacons armor, and chrono-lock and the blade of souls then I'll probably tell you to take a hike.
Simply put, if someone who hasn't played the game can understand it and it isn't cliche then I don't mind.

The commander looked over his shoulder at Bob, his eye glowing with utter fury, and while in terms of Raw power Bob was possibly stronger, there were some things that could make even a chaos shard crap its pants, and it appeared that the Commander was one of those. "Sit! Back. Down." he said, you could almost hear the capital letters.

Shiro glanced up at the other two and snapped his palm outwards, the chair crumpling in to a ball and bouncing across the floor, tilting his head. "So we have another Idiot god and a Calico. possibly snow leopard. Please tell me one of you atlest has a shred of understanding for the idea of tactics?"

The Room Was one of the meany briefing rooms that the ISF had. Medium sized bland walls, a whiteboard, projector, light strips and scattered around the room were a handful of metal chairs, probably no more than ten. Two people were already in the room, One was huge, sitting on the desk looking away from the room at the whiteboard, stroking his beard slowly and thoughtfully, the other sat sprawled across two chairs a third floating above his palm in a shimmering feild, twisting this way and that, seeming to ignore normal rules as magnetic fields forced it to contort in slow and torturous movements. the two seemed to ignore the existence of one another. both however waited for the same thing.

Name; "Call me Sir or Commander or I'll take that shiny Excalibur badge of yours and shove it up your-" well you get the idea.
Age; Ageless
Gender; Male
Race; Unknown
Breif race description; He looks human. but is most definatly not
History; One of the founding members of the ISF a expert in both close and ranged combat, though few have ever seen him action no one doubts his prowess. No one asks him meany questions.
Personality; Brash, proud, loud, but underneath he does care.
Powers; He's Seemingly Imortal, (Shiro's stopped his heart in the past and he kept on fighting, he's also taken a tank shell to the beard and shook it off), Strong enough to crush steal in his hands, faster than most advanced transport methods. He also appears to be immune to almost any ability that affects his mind/sanity or personality, though that might just be because he tends to slap people that play mind games.
Appearance; Huge, he's about 8ft tall, built like a tank, and all of it is muscle, his hair is white and he wears a eye-patch. he wears a military uniform with some dislike and prefers to wear just basic combat gear.

Weapons; Those who have seen him fight claim he uses nothing more than a spear but he also carries a odd looking gun that he calls the 'D-gun' once agian, no one has seen it used but everyone fears this weapon.

This is the Commanding Officer. He won't be coming in to combat with the Team. just keeping us in line.

Missed something from the op post, also not to sure on the controlling peoples minds, also, you need to balance it out it seems as if he is capable of fighting the whole of Excalibur on his own. but yeah, we're good.
