Avani smiled into Kasai’s kiss and closed her eyes, moving her hands to pull off her own jacket, but before she had a chance to do so the moment was over. She frowned and moved away from Kasai, seating herself at the other end of the seat. “I think you misunderstood the concept of a quickie.” She snorted. “I guess you’d prefer it if I was nowhere near you either then, as they might see it when we arrive.”

She didn’t say anything more, even though Kasai did and it was tempting to respond with more snark. It wouldn’t lead to anything else than a temporary satisfaction. As much as she may want to lash out, her words would achieve nothing. It had dawned on her. If she truly wanted to get what she wanted she had to play it all a different way, and by being patient. At the moment, that just meant she had to soldier through this bullshit.

Avani listened to Kasai’s final advice as she was lead inside, and nodded. Soon she found herself in another interview room, similar to the one she had been in a couple of weeks ago. As she waited she began to hum again, and look around the room. There was nothing noteworthy inside. Actually, it was devoid of anything else than chairs and a table.

Once the detective that was going to interview her arrived, she answered her questions truthfully, albeit with a large amount of sarcasm and flirtation. Where were you on this or that date? Where was I? No, where were you, sugar?

Maybe it would make Kasai reconsider that quickie if she was outside like she had said she would be, but really she had a better excuse to do it. As dumb as she thought the pigs were, she didn’t imagine they had all forgotten about her apparent relationship with Kasai. If she flirted with another woman within their ranks like it was nothing, it should give Kasai more deniability.

She found it amusing too. It would likely be the one time she could flirt so obviously with someone else in front of her current love interest. No, babe, I totally did it for you. Now you can deny there was anything special between us. It was just a slight misstep on your part, tell them you’ve always wanted to experiment and I was too hot to pass up. Especially that last part.

The detective was less than amused by her behaviour though, but as she did tell the truth eventually when pushed there wasn’t much she could do about it. The interview took much longer than it might have if she had been more willing to cooperate. Avani was not threatened by the detective when she told her she would make sure she got what was coming to her if she didn’t start answering her questions properly. What do you mean? I’m telling you everything I know. My attitude? Sorry, your body is distracting.

She was left alone in the interview room when the detective exited, left to wonder what would happen next.

Zoe smirked as she was called a joker, but didn’t reply and kept her hand on her rifle underneath the blankets. I can’t handle myself as well as I think? Heh, she wasn’t certain what she thought to begin with. One moment she wished she would die, just turn the rifle on herself to make it quick perhaps, and the other she felt some kind of hope. At least coming off as confident to others was a good thing, even if she didn’t like Sienna’s attitude about it either way. She’d accept her help for now, until the woman showed what she wanted from her.

“G’night…” Zoe responded, but remained upright for a while, listening for what the other woman might be trying to do in the dark. Once she
had calmed herself down, she laid down on the hard floor.

Sometime during the night she was awakened by the sound of feet. At first it made her reach for her rifle, as she figured that it was either Sienna or someone else who’d decided to make a move against her. Half an hour passed in darkness, without the sound getting any closer to her. She checked on Sienna quickly, and found her seemingly asleep despite the unnerving noises.

Maybe it was normal then, something to get used too. It wasn’t like she had the time to get used to it though. She had dozed off near machinery at times when working in the vault, but this was a whole other type of annoying. Zoe tried her best to get some sleep. When Sienna called her name she didn’t know whether she had slept or not, time had passed faster than it should have, but she didn’t feel rested.

“I’m awake…” She mumbled, and yawned. The idea of covering a lot of ground after so little good sleep wasn’t appealing, but what could she do? Demand they stay a few more days just so she could get used to the noises? No, better get going and get separated soon.
Well, on a positive note she had survived her first night in the wasteland. She doubted every vault dwellers who did leave their vault managed that. On the other hand, she had survived her first night and that meant some other brutal and painful death may be waiting for her.

Zoe didn’t need to get dressed or anything, as she had slept with her clothes on. It wasn’t like she expected Sienna to have a bathroom nearby for her to use either. If she did make it to Sydney she’d go for a swim in the ocean, assuming that was possible.
Cath smiled as their fixer responded to her by first addressing whether she had meant to flatter or make fun of her. Perhaps a bit of both she thought to herself, but didn't get a chance to reply before the call was cut. There was that final message through her commlink though. It was obviously adressed to all of them. She tried sending a private reply back to Zelda. "Why, flatter, of course. I'm a sucker for women with delightful accents - TheElf" It was close enough to the truth, even if she prefered an irish or french accent before any other. Mimicking others was often a good way to build rapport with them too, and that had been the main reason, but it was considerably easier when she had more to go on than audio. Body language was preferable.

“Let’s consider this astral she mentioned, rather than what she may look like.” Mirage cut in.

Oh yeah, that, well she doubted it was something the two of them couldn’t handle together or with the added assistance of a spirit. Admittedly, she hadn’t heard a lot about CDs that were attached to the astral before. Other than perhaps the contents, as someone could have put any kind of information on one. She would assume that was what their fixer had meant, until proven otherwise, but remain cautious anyway.

Caewil supposed she could ask around about the CDs, perhaps visit that other shaman who had a shop nearby or consult the spirits. The best way would be to simply get her hands on the CDs, because then she didn’t have to do as much guessing, not that they would be hers to keep for long. Her quick and nimble fingers could possibly pocket one when someone wasn’t looking, but she may not have a use for the CD at all. It would be a shame to take such a risk for a meaningless object.

She kept part of her attention on the team members, smiled and nodded without appearing distracted despite being quite absorbed with her own thoughts. It was mechanical, and something she could do on auto-pilot without being as obvious about it as someone else might be. Cath didn’t have many contacts in the area or the country, but she didn’t need too. Part of her job was to make new friends as fast as possible. She was glad that the ork would be the one to talk with a troll instead of her.

“I guess I could investigate this “wicked juju on dem CDs.” Cath said, this time making fun of Zelda. “Maybe another shaman nearby knows about it, or there are always other beings… I could probably get information out of reluctant sources too if anyone knows someone that wouldn’t tell them much.”

It didn’t seem like this would be a mission that required a lot of preparation from her side. She could take a look around the docks to find out what clothes they were wearing to fit in better, but other than that she would bring her usual gear. As Traction began to go over a plan, Mirage shifted in Caewil’s lap and made her more attentive. Had she missed something he had picked up on?

“Who put this bloody youngling in charge?” He asked after Traction had finished her speech on such a distasteful note. “We could lock her in a box with her tech and she’d be just as useful.”

No, she hadn’t missed anything of importance. Well, Traction agreed with her that there was not much to prepare for this job, even if she couldn’t express herself this particularly idea in an appropriate manner. At least not to Cath, even if the others may listen better to such an attitude. She shrugged and figured it was the only way she knew how to make others listen, a lack of social skills, nothing more.

“I guess I will have to consult the spirits in the car.” Cath joked and gestured with her hands, then stood up and headed for her belongings. She’d put her belongings here, but she hadn’t entirely made up her mind about whether to stay in the same place as the rest of the team or not yet. She’d spent some nights in the safe house, but almost as many in other places thanks to her skills as a face and the fact that she was used to shitty sleeping conditions after living on the streets. Twice she had fled countries, and it had made her a little paranoid. If she found a place she considered safe she’d feel better, but everyone gathered in one apartment could make it easy for an enemy.
She smiled as Kasai explained her reasoning to her, and kept herself from lashing out again just because she had said her way was best. There was no good option here as far as she could tell, but she’d rather not argue about it to the point that they truly went separate ways.

“If it’ll keep you out of trouble then I’m sure. Maybe I’ll be able to sneak away afterwards.” She doubted it would be a possibility though. “My bike? Fair enough, don’t want to get a ticket on top of everything else…”

Avani returned to her bike to move it to a better parking spot. She could hear Kasai following behind her in the police vehicle. The thought to speed up and leave her crossed her mind, but she shrugged it off. There was no point, even if she might be able to lose a larger vehicle in narrow back alleys. It didn’t take long for her to find a good place to park it, she knew the city well.

“Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaw!” Avani exclaimed disappointedly when Kasai told her they were doing it the easy way, and no cuffs were necessary. “You know you can put those on me whenever you want too. There’s no need to care about necessity or anything.” She got in the car together with Kasai without raising anymore objections. Better to just get it over with than drag it out.

She scooted closer to Kasai as the car began to move, and laid her arm behind the other woman, on top of the large singular seat. “I was serious about the quickie, babe.” Avani whispered into Kasai’s ear. “In case you needed to unwind after a hard day at work, even if the day isn’t over yet. I’m not gonna run away.”

Avani laid her head on the woman’s shoulder, and pressed her nose against her neck to take in her smell. It was familiar enough after their weekend and days together. She’d missed it. Well, she’d missed everything about Kasai really. The smell allowed her to close her eyes and imagine they were somewhere else entirely though. On a tropical beach, or in a shared bed after a wild night.

She begun to hum a tune she’d heard somewhere, while keeping her arm around Kasai and her head on her shoulder. It was best if she didn’t try anything too bold, lest Kasai crash the car because of it. Second time she was being taken to the police station when previously she had avoided the attention of the pigs for the most part. It was easy to see whose influence was causing these frequent visits to the pigsty, but maybe it was a bad good influence on her. Perhaps it would set her down a better path if she survived the ordeals.
Posted. Sorry for taking a while.
The heat was oppressive, and though she preferred to be outside on sunny days she had had to seek refuge in a Starbucks of all things. Corporate greed clinged to the walls and the atmosphere of the place. The cheap soykaf tasted about as bad as the first time. Back home in Tir Na Nog, she had been able to get real actual coffee when she had socialized with the Danaan families… But that was the problem, she wasn’t back home. A number of bad decisions on her part had placed her in a racist dump in a whole other country. She doubted she would have liked it much even without the racism. Initially, it hadn’t been so bad to live in the UCAS. The worst part had been how much she had missed her love. The one person she had thought was her true love had only answered her calls once after she had arrived, to tell her that she should never call again, and that had been that. If she’d used her brain, she could have seen this ending coming before the affair begun. It was another harsh lesson she’d been forced to learn.

“Would you rather be dead?” Mirage asked, from where he sat on the table, having known her long enough to be able to tell what she was thinking too often. “You bloody well would be if it weren’t for me.”

Caewil made a grimace at him, feeling no need to respond, smile or give him her entire attention. It had always been a welcome addition to have someone in her life she could be rude and uncaring towards at times. Especially since she had become a face and learnt how to play nice with everyone, despite what she really thought of them. No one else would stick by her side in the same way, and after losing her true love she’d likely never love anyone else than Mirage.

She hadn’t spent her entire time in Louisana sulking though. It was the damn soykaf and Starbucks that put her in a sour mood at the moment. The team she was a member of could be entertaining if she was bored, but there were a couple of establishments nearby that had been fun to visit.

The racist dance club called Samuel’s had been interesting. She had only meant to try and see if she could talk her way inside while covering up her ears with fake long hair. It had worked better than expected. All she had done was shout at the bouncer at the door that she was no metahuman, and how dare he suggest such, until a member of the staff told him to let her inside. It was probably her eyes that had made him suspicious. Fake IDs that identified her as human had been in her possession for years. Caewil had been the life of the party once inside, dancing and spouting racist nonsense with the rest of them. Those who hadn’t been careful with their jewellery would find some of it missing after the night was over, but she needed it more than them anyway. It was still in her possession actually, as she hadn’t decided whether to keep it or pawn it.

The other night she had visited Under the Floorboards as well. The difference between the two clubs had been large. Yet, she hadn’t gone to either as her true self. At the metahuman bar she had donned some of her trashier clothes and a few facial piercings to fit in better. Somehow, it had been less exciting than Samuel’s. Maybe because she wasn’t facing the same threat if anyone found out she was faking her entire persona. Caewil had made a few contacts at the bar before calling it a night with another elf. Losing faith in love, didn’t mean she couldn’t enjoy physical pleasures of the flesh.

She hadn’t decided on what place to visit today, and her thoughts were interrupted by the vibrating commlink in her pocket before she could. Apparently the briefing was about to begin. Well, at least it meant she didn’t have to bother trying to drink anymore of the soykaf. Caewil made her way back to their hotel across the street, and entered their room with a confident stride before long. She found most of the team gathered already, except for the Ork it seemed.

“Greetings.” Caewil said with a wave of her hand, and a smile. “Such a sunny day we’ve got. It might burn your skin right off!”

“Laying it on thick.” Mirage muttered behind her.

She took a seat where she could find one. Mirage jumped up her in lap to listen to the briefing with them, and out of habit her hand soon petted his soft fur. It doubtlessly looked off to anyone else that couldn’t see him. The team had probably already heard her talk with no one more than once in the past month.

“Mi be wonderin’ if ya gotta clue who dey belong too, yeah?” Caewil asked after the woman had stopped talking, trying to mimic her dialect as best she could. After the botched run, she’d be willing to listen to suspicions. “Who else be wantin’ de CDs.”
Avani didn’t respond to Kasai’s comments about threatening her. She kept a cold expression on her face, and waited for the woman to arrest her for doing nothing again. At least she’d have a reason for getting Avani into trouble with the pigs this time, even if it was weak, which was more than she’d had last time.

She didn’t think Kasai was all that terrible to her, not all the time. As long as she didn’t force her to interact with other cops, lock her up or try to get her killed, but here she was trying to achieve at least one of those. Admittedly, she doubted she was doing it out of spite.

They were just too different. They’d lead very different lives. It felt natural for Avani to feel distrust and hatred towards cops. She’d ended up on the other side of the law like her mother before her. The trust Kasai seemed to expect for her to have for them to help her didn’t exist.

Avani didn’t much care for the gang members as friends either. If anything, she should have left Republic City before being dragged into this mess. Perhaps if she went back to her home city of Ba Sing Se she’d avoid both groups, then when matters had settled down she could return. Kasai would likely not let her go free after confessing something like that though, as she could tell the gang about it and make everything more difficult.

She was noticeably surprised when Kasai turned her back on her to walk back to her car, after she had finished speaking. Was she not going to take her in…? Wasn’t that part of her job? Avani worried that she may have taken it too far if Kasai wasn’t going to bother doing even that.
“Uh… Aren’t you going to… you know…” Avani mumbled.

It wasn’t that she wanted to be arrested. It was more that she was already regretting some of what she had said and didn’t want Kasai to get in trouble because of her. What would the pigs do if they found out she had let Avani leave the city? She could be a useful witness to them, but she was definitely a suspect too.

She glanced back at her motorcycle for a second, wanting to forget everything and actually escape. It wouldn’t be that easy though.

“Wait!” Avani exclaimed, and used her earthbending to move herself between Kasai and the car before she entered it. The gaze that met her was as hard as a moment ago. “Look, you’ve got me stuck between a rock and a hard place here. I didn’t mean what I said. I panicked, okay.” She sighed and frowned. “I’m sorry. I don’t think those things about you. I think you’re special.” Well, for a cop she certainly was. “I’d rather not pick a side. If I could, I’d go back in time to make sure I never dealt with cops or criminals to this degree. Except for you, maybe.” She smiled shyly. “If I was alone in this I’d be on the next train out of here. But I’m not, and I don’t want to get you into more trouble than I already have with the pigs… Shouldn’t you take me in at the very least?”

She couldn’t believe she was suggesting it herself, and yet, it didn’t make her feel dumber than she had when threatening Kasai.

Zoe took the can and the spoon that was handed to her, but put it below her nose and sniffed the contents before deciding whether it was edible or not. It didn’t smell bad, and while it could have looked more appetizing she was too hungry to care at the moment. She dug in, but kept an eye on Sienna as she checked the windows.

What an understatement, Zoe thought and scoffed when Sienna said she needed to be a bit more careful out here. It wasn’t much better than the situation in the vault. At least she had more freedom out here and could carve out her own haven given time. Maybe it would be beneficial for her to be the aggressor next time, before someone got the jump on her again.

She smirked when Sienna said it was about nothing else than what someone could do for you, and what you could do for them. What did she want Zoe to do for her then? It was doubtful she’d picked her to come with her out of the good of her heart. No, she didn’t think that was likely at all.

“Nope, never.” Zoe confirmed, once more. She wasn’t honestly expecting to find much in Sydney, especially not if the other cursed survivors of humanity were drawn to it. It made her less eager to go there in the first place. Perhaps there was some kind of hidden oasis waiting for her somewhere else? She smiled briefly, but shrugged the silly thought away. A girl could dream.

“I left alone.” She put the can down on the floor, and pushed it away from herself. She didn’t want to accidentally sleep on it during the night. “There were quite a few of us before then. Maybe thirty or so. I don’t think anyone followed me though.”

Zoe listened with half an ear to Sienna’s story about her own experience of leaving home. It wasn’t like their experiences were all that similar. For one, Sienna had left unwillingly and Zoe had escaped by her own free will. Secondly, Zoe’s family had died years before she left. Well, other than her brother, but she didn’t want to count him as part of her family.

“Or they just wanted to get rid of you.” She mumbled, having closed her eyes and leaned back against the propped up pillow. “There were children stories in the vault about how parents got rid of children that were too much of an annoyance or problem to keep.” She smiled to herself, amused, even if they had had those stories just to keep children in line in the vault.

Sienna was partly correct in assuming that Zoe thought she was going to kill her. She had been thinking that earlier, but now she was more concerned about what the woman actually wanted with her. It had to be something else, like she said she could have killed her already, or tried too if nothing else.

“Gut feeling?” Zoe answered, disinterested, and pulled her blankets tighter around herself. At the same time she moved her hand below them towards her rifle, in case Sienna was going to go off because she didn’t bother giving more of an answer. “I’d like to get some sleep, if you don’t mind.”
