Today, Matt and I spent a good few hours reinforcing the outer barricades, beyond the courtyard. Shelton seemed adamant that this first line of defense before the school itself was essential - it kept the enemy out of biting range, and allowed us space and time to pick them off from a distance. Additionally, we have begun constructing watchtowers on this outer wall, and Shelton has written up a schedule for watch duty consisting of his men, and a few other volunteers.

We haven't had any trouble outside the barricade for five days now, apart from the occasional straggler. Overall, things are pretty safe in our corner of the world - I hope they stay that way. Laurel has been through a lot over the course of this year, and though she knows I'll always be there for her, leading the camp is taking it's toll. Thankfully I have Shelton to bear some of the burden, God knows I'm no military man.

The closing line of the journal entry echoed serenely in the mind of Jack Marino, as he, too, wondered if tomorrow would be better. Hell, we wasn't even sure if he'd be alive tomorrow - but he tried not to let it get him down. The man, Desmond, had ended every single journal entry with the same line. For the former Congressman, it almost sounded like a campaign slogan: "A Better Tomorrow". Yet there was a certain charm to it, a peculiar optimism that must have kept Desmond going until the end - and kept Jack reading from the hundreds of entries contained within the simple-looking black hardcover journal.

The call of a crow outside tore Jack from his thoughts. Sighing, he closed the book and had a look around the spartan accommodations of the Cougar Rock Campground Check-In Building. The structure seemed almost entirely undisturbed from human contact since the start of the crisis, to his pleasant surprise. It looked as if not many people decided to call Cougar Rock their home after things went to shit, which meant better opportunities for Jack during he stay there. Granted, Cougar Rock was just a point of rest. He planned on staying a day or two, then continue along the road southwest to the town of Ashford. However, during his brief scout of the park he realized he just may have a shot at hunting there, and hoped to replenish his food supply before departing.

Outside, rays of warm bright light poured in through the front window, and, apart from the occasional bird call or the rustling of the leaves, the park was eerily quiet. Jack missed the sounds of nature - the omnipresent presence of a forest exuding life around you. Hell, he missed the bustle of a city - even the incessant bickering of congressmen in Washington. He missed it all. But this world, filled with the dead and the desperate, this world was the one he knew now.

Wooooo! A couple of questions though: How long has it been since the events of the last Northwards thread? A month? A year?

Also, I noticed from Shelton's thread that you guys are somewhere near Mt. Rainier, but I was wondering where exactly. In the nearby town? Or physically in a cabin right next to the Mountain?

Bio/Background:
Prior to Outbreak: Jack Marino was born in Spokane, Washington, to an Italian-born mother and an American father who owned and ran a successful restaurant in the heart of the city. By the age of ten he had already begun to show political ambition, and was elected Class President for his high school class. He then went on to get a degree in Political Science from UCal Berkeley. Upon his return, and after working for a few years running his father's restaurant, he turned his attention back to politics. Over the next few years Jack worked his way through local and state government as a moderate member of the Democratic Party, eventually being elected Representative for the State of Washington. He gained some national attention, both for his middle-of-the-road tendencies (a pro-gun-rights Socialist turned quite a bit of heads) and for his own personal beliefs, having been one of the only congressional American politicians in U.S. history to not believe in a God.
Post-Outbreak: Jack found himself in Southern California visiting relatives when the outbreak struck. Conditions were extremely bad in that region, and despite his best efforts to get back to his home state, he found himself stuck. For five months he led a group of survivors in Riverside, California - outside of the death trap that was L.A.. After a raider attack compromised his camp, the group scattered and he was forced northwards alone. Moving often and keeping to himself as much as possible, over the next few months he gradually made his way up to Washington, finally making it back to Spokane. There, he found that his father's restaurant had been destroyed, and his parents dead. With a heavy heart, he searched Spokane and the nearby towns once more for supplies before heading west toward the seacoast.
Occupation Pre-Apocalyse: Washington State Representative - Democrat
Other: Jack is in possession of a notebook written by a deceased survivor named Desmond Williams, which he had found on Desmond's person in Colbert, Washington a few days after he had apparently killed himself to avoid turning. The notebook has extensive records of all of Desmond's friends, chronicling his life since departing New York, and contains all of Desmond's tips for where to scavenge, who not to interact with, and so forth. As the only piece of literature readily available, Jack has studied it pretty extensively.

Still room for a couple of my old characters? I think the only one I'd bring back is Jackson - Jamie could have died, I don't care, and Desmond was on his way out last RP anyway. Though I may have a way to still "incorporate" him (his notebook)

Faction Name: Babylon Advanced Armaments Corporation
History: The Corporation began thirty years prior, in the city of Babylon following a merger of the state's major and minor weapons corporations under one banner. Ownership was split five ways between the former proprietors. Jonah Danes, son of Maxwell Danes - CEO of Danes Armaments - took his father's shares of the company, and began to accrue more power over time by buying out or "negotiating with" various other board members. As being the owner of the majority of BAAC stock Danes has become the Board Chairman in addition to being the Corporation's CEO, and oversees most day to day activities. Babylon Advanced Armaments has since become a significant influence in the state of Babylon, both commercially and - some say - politically.

Services: Babylon Advanced Armaments offers a variety of weaponry, from small arms such as handguns and compact particle rifles, to larger defense arrays. As one of the largest Weapons Manufacturers on Outremer, BAAC Merchandise can be found in all four city states.
Policies: BAAC employs a variety of independent contractors and mercenaries to protect their routes and products. As a result, and due to their tendencies not to be too picky about who they employ, numerous scandals have erupted regarding their moral character. Reports of entire desert villages wiped out, officials extorted, and other, less-than-legal products transported alongside their weaponry keep the BAAC Legal Team occupied most hours of the day. However, none of these allegations have achieved any credibility in the public eye, as any rock-hard evidence was covered up soon afterwards.
