USS Audacia: Boldly Going Where We Really Shouldn't

Maggie helpfully tossed a datapad at Kal's face, trusting the supersoldier's reflexes to avoid a broken nose. "Read and weep," she said dryly. "Real boring stuff, just a pickup here, but the first person to say The Words Which Shall Not Be Spoken is getting a kick in the nuts." The phrase 'what's the worst that could happen?' had only been said once on the Audacia. Almost immediately after, several irreparable cascade failures had occurred and at least once crewman had died. The crew had a healthy suspicion of any phrases even vaguely similar ever since The Incident.

She glanced around the table, counting off on her fingers. "Alright, so—Bolts is coming, Kal, that's you if you're in, do we even want Mallory to come, and me. Is that enough?" It was a genuine question—it wasn't like she'd had any experience putting together ground teams before. She was also a little desperate for someone else to take charge—she did NOT want the Captain's chair.

They're fairly rich, and Victoria (somewhat) takes that for granted, but she finally couldn't take it anymore. After eighteen years of being used by one parent or the other to get back at the other, she's had enough, and managed to convince her parents to let her transfer to Teneber, where her aunt lives, so she's finishing her senior year there; away from her parents and all of her false 'friends.' Victoria also prefers talking people to her side rather than fighting them.

Psychic Strength: Compulsion; her victims rarely notice that something's 'off' about the sudden urge to do as she wishes.

"Nice of you to show up, Kal," Maggie said dryly, folding her arms across her chest. On her end, she didn't think a standard search-and-rescue for the Captain would do much good at this stage—there were a handful of planets they'd visited around the time of her disappearance, and even more space stations and other ships; she could be anywhere. They needed to do this smart.

"Pickup and drop off, Rama, we do actually have a job this time," she continued. "You wanna tag along, or stay here and wear out my replicator again?"

Valencia Vasquez

(as far as appearance goes, think Audrey Ramirez from Atlantis: The Lost Empire)
Gender: Female
Age: 22
Skills:

• mechanical genius
• eidetic memory
• very, very good with machines, almost intuitive skill with vehicles
• handy with a pistol but not much else

Background:
Valencia grew up in Sol Azteca, a settlement in the Spanish interior. The town there had strict, brutal rules, a la ancient Babylon—an eye for an eye, literally—so that everyone could survive on equal terms. Val was the daughter of small-time farmers who attended to Azteca's miniscule vegetable gardens, but even at a young age she had an aptitude for mechanic work. However, according to the strict codes, occupations were passed down from family to family—Val was going to be a farmer, and that was that.

She said 'screw that' and started going to the local vehicle warehouses in secret. The lead mechanic there, Ferio, was willing to teach her—she was utterly useless with plants, and he was old, and looking for a replacement. He thought that maybe, if she was skilled enough when they brought up the idea of switching professions, they might win over the leaders to their side.

They didn't. When they were discovered, Ferio was immediately executed—left to die just outside the town's shoddy, sand-block walls, and Val had to watch. They thought it would cow her into doing her duty—it did the opposite. She wasn't quite so sadistic as to burn their crops before she left, but she painted several...obscene images onto buildings before she grabbed her personally modified motorcycle and as much water and food as she could carry and got the hell out of there.

So far, 'surviving' is a nice way of saying what Val's done. She's eaten things no human should eat, done things no sane person should do, just for the sake of surviving on her own. She values her independence fiercely, but she knows she can't last forever like this, and as long as someone's willing to let her do her thing with her scraps of free time, she'll put her (frankly ridiculous) mechanical skills to use for any bit of shade.
