bumping this one more time, if interest doesn't pick up, i'll let this one go.
[quietly bumps this]
Air. Water. Earth. Fire. Long ago, the four nations existed side by side, just as likely to send soldiers as diplomats. Life could be rough on the borders during wartime, but things would always settle eventually, and cities were prospering.

Then the Avatar’s family was killed.

It was an accident, everyone agreed on that—just another traveling caravan caught up in a bender’s fight during one of the Earth Kingdom’s squabbles with the Water Tribe. But something went wrong—terribly wrong—and the Avatar’s spouse and four children were trapped in a tiny cave that slowly filled with water. Avatar Rikke entered the Avatar State...and never quite came out.

Twenty years passed, and every spot of chaos was ruthlessly stamped out. Claiming that they clearly had no idea how to rule themselves, the Avatar took control of every national government within weeks of their loss. There was some initial resistance, but most people still adored the Avatar and were willing to follow their lead...and didn’t realize the full extent of their ‘reform’ until too late. Slowly but surely, over the next decade, the Avatar became the ultimate dictator of the four nations, joined by his Assembly of trusted and like-minded officials. The nations were further divided into Districts, to manage them more efficiently, totaling fifteen districts internationally. There was harmony, yes—but at the cost of the Trials.

Once a year, each of those fifteen districts must select two Champions, benders or non-benders, male or female, anywhere from sixteen to twenty five. The Champions are brought to Ba Sing Se, center of the Avatarium, where they will be treated with utmost respect and lavished with gifts and wealth for a time of two weeks. Then, they will be brought to the Arena, a different one every year—and there they will fight to the death. One Champion will walk out, their names remembered through time, their lives forever changed, their district lifted from poverty until the next Tournament; those that fail have their names struck from all record but the memories of their families, lost to history, as a reminder of the nameless lives lost during the petty infighting of the warlords in the Beforetime.

Although someone—somewhere—must be living happily, this world has entered an age of fear and sickness. There is only balance in the most technical sense. Every night, people pray to the spirits that seem to have abandoned us for a new Avatar, or at least an end to this yearly torture. I believe someone will be sent to save us.

I just don’t know who.

wow. that—that was a very long intro, so here’s the tl;dr:

  • the Avatar went crazy a few decades back, took over the whole world
  • their dictatorship is the one that started the Tournaments as punishment for chaos/being ‘out of balance’
  • no one actual knows if Avatar Rikke, the one who took over, is still alive. there may well be a new Avatar out there.
  • six Champions from the Fire Nation; six from the Northern Water Tribe; six from the Southern; twelve from the Earth Kingdom; thirty Champions total, i’m a-okay with doubling up but most of them will probably be cannon fodder NPCs
  • you can be a bender or non-bender, skilled or unskilled, 16-25 age range, whatever you want!
  • i’m planning on a power grid system; you get a certain number of ‘points’ to spend on a few skills like strength, speed, ‘special’ (bending or a unique fighting skill like the Kyoshi fans), etc. these skills will factor into who wins what kinds of fights. if anyone has a better suggestion, please let me know!
  • battles and actions will be decided by a mix of chance and statistics. i.e, if someone with no strength stat tries to hurl a boulder, it’s not going to work. similarly, if a firebender with a low bending stat tries to generate lightning, also not going to work.
  • the arena layout will be a secret until the Tournament begins, and there will be ‘gamemaker events’ like in the books

so that’s that! if you’re interested, give me a sign, if you have questions, ask away, and with enough people i’ll get the ooc going!

absolutely interested. thinking of putting in for a lady founding member who's currently the road captain!
sorry about that...delayed way too long. hopefully things will pick up again!
Vanahara grunted in response to the offered ladder, wedging her feet in and buckling her belt to an exposed bar. She was already where she needed to be—it would be inefficient to move away now.

"Hydromancers could move it—chuck it over the railing, get it off the ship," she said shortly, carefully maneuvering her fingers between two snapped struts. "Pyro could melt it down, though. Depends on what you want."

There was a long beat of silence as her brow furrowed, coaxing the delicate shards back into a whole piece. Her bare fingertips traced the seam, making sure that it wouldn't fracture the instant she pulled away. It only took half her attention, though—the rest was building a mental image of the workings of the engine. Ironworker she may be, but Vana had a weakness for beautiful, complicated machines.

"I've never seen an engine like this," she said absently, glancing at the sergeant out of the corner of her eye. "The Academy doesn't keep many airships on hand." Her expression didn't change from her default seriousness, so the rare joke might easily slip by unnoticed.

Vana extracted her arm from the engine, turning to the sergeant and tilting her head to the side. "I can find the mages, bring them back here." She knew that people were sometimes...nervous, around mages. Not that they didn't have historical reasoning behind it, but, well...there was a reason the Academy existed.
Hannah groaned as the Captain's barked order came over the comm, coughing up a lung as she pulled herself to her feet with the railing. Make that foot—she limped to the console and propped her hip against it, fingers flying to input the override that would allow the cargo bay to open even with the alarms blaring.

Captain Lee made it to the release, the hatch opened, and some of the haze lessened. The coughing didn't let up, but Hannah slumped against the railing in relief anyway. She let her knees buckle and she sat on the floor, legs swinging in the open air over the cargo bay and her arms folded on top of the bottom rail.

"Captain," she said hoarsely, "Honest to Betsy that wasn't me this time."

She was just about to try some weak joke to try and brighten the Captain's black mood when the stragglers from outside caught her attention. Her eyebrows rose, and she pulled herself to her feet again, painfully making her way down into the hold. She gave halfhearted waves to the newcomers, but figured that if anyone was going to let them on board, it should be the Captain—and she had crates of grenades to shove in a refrigerator. And a busted ankle to deal with. Christ.
Oᴠᴇʀᴠɪᴇᴡ

hello everyone! so, after two accounts (rest in peace original account, may i one day find your login info) and many years on this site, i'm finally pulling my art off its shelf and showing it off a bit. i'm also over at deviantart, if you're looking for more/older examples.

anyway, here's the pitch: i'm offering commissions for custom character sheets and portraits, on the cheap. examples and pricing are below! i only have a few guidelines:

  • i am currently opening five slots on a first come first serve basis. i doubt i'll fill up, but if i do, i work pretty quickly so just wait a few days!
  • there will be a signature on every piece i do, but i'll be sure to keep it unobtrusive—do not crop, cover, or otherwise remove it under any circumstances!
  • when i do a commission, i will send you a preliminary sketch to make sure everything's the way you want it—for example, if you want your character's skirt a bit longer or eyes a bit rounder, that's when you speak up. once the piece is done, i will only make very minor edits, so don't be afraid to correct my sketch. remember, any big changes after i'm done will cost extra!
  • i'd be more than happy to discuss special pricing for multiple orders at once!
  • i do ask for half payment after doing the sketch, then the rest of it once i'm finished. refunds are on a case by case basis, and will not be given once the piece is done.
  • you can use my work anywhere you'd like, just remember to credit me!
  • exclamation points!

    • for multiple different outfits, each additional outfit will cost an extra $10; for example, two outfits on the same character would cost $30
    • to draw the outfits, i need a good description—the more details and/or references you include, the better the end product will be!
    • if you don't have an outfit in mind for your character and want me to design it based on a few hints, i can do that too! we'll discuss pricing.
  • Cʜᴀʀᴀᴄᴛᴇʀ Pᴏʀᴛʀᴀɪᴛs

It was a long moment before Hekat let her hand fall from the window, but when she did, it curled into a fist at her side. She squared her shoulders once more, eyes closing momentarily as she got herself under control and turned to face her companion. In the distance, the rumble of thunder was a constant background noise.

She opened her mouth to say something to Zolkin, but before she could get a word out their mentor stepped forward. Hekat's lip curled slightly as she looked over the diminutive woman, but she quickly smoothed her expression. Arlene Fisher—she'd won the Battle more than a decade ago, and that accent marked her as one of the wealthier people in Sector Five. She'd won the Battle, though, so there was clearly something lurking under that motherly exterior and curiously relieved tone , but she couldn't be more different from Hekat herself. She'd be of limited use, but there was no reason to antagonize her right off the bat—so Hekat ignored the use of 'cutie pie.' For now.

"Mrs. Fisher," she greeted with a nod, folding her hands behind her back. "Hekat Bakshi. A pleasure to meet y—"

She was cut off when the black-haired woman bounced forward to fold her into a brief hug. Hekat blinked, still parsing the gesture when their mentor moved on to give the same treatment to AJ. "Oh, please, darlin', call me Arlene! We're gonna have to know each other pretty well before the Battle, aren't we?"

Hekat exchanged a glance with Alva as Arlene turned to lead them on a tour of the train—a glance of shared resignation. Having Arlene as a mentor was going to be...interesting. The three moved through the train, Fisher keeping up a constant stream of commentary on the various rooms. For her part, Hekat glanced around, but her main thoughts were on the strategy she'd use once in the Battle. Allies? Likely not. Only one person could win, and Hekat wasn't small enough, cute enough, or friendly enough to inspire die-hard loyalty. Sponsors, though...sponsors could mean life or death in the arena. She'd just have to pick a facet of her personality to play up that wasn't 'constantly annoyed.'

"Mrs F—Arlene," she cut in once they reached the dining car. "What exactly can you tell us about this year? What can we expect once we get to the Training Center?"

The mentor paused, giving the candidates an empty smile. "Well, it's the same as always, really...you'll have to find out for yourself about the Arena, but the rules are all the same. And you'll be at the Training Center for about a week, maybe more, depending on how they do the training this year...we'll just have to see!"

Hekat refrained from sighing, but her eyes did narrow. She knew the information the mentors were allowed to give to their candidates was extremely limited, but there had to be more than that. 'Of little use' was right.
