Current 1st person POV is difficult to write well, but it certainly can be done. DIckens proved it twice.

Following Karadar, Anna listened. She did not speak, hoping to take in all she could of her new surroundings. She would be living here from now on, so may as well get acquainted with the lay of the land early on. And, as she suspected, they came to a drinking hall. Well, a dining hall with drink in it. Close enough for government work, certainly. But then their leader charged off to accost a group of knights drinking within. The one he addressed was a rather tough-looking she-knight. Anna could only hear some of the conversation, having not followed Karadar away from the doorway. Something about the stuff in the barrels being reserved for something or other. He was angry, and the woman seemed dismissive of the whole thing. The late arrival to the new squad- the one called Spark- charged ahead, taking a sip from a mug. Anna followed behind, smirking at her disgust.

"The young drink it quickly," she said with a chuckle, clapping Spark heavily on the back, "and the old drink it slowly. But I think..."

And she glanced toward Karadar, as he made for the exit.

"our gallant captain would like to continue. No cause to hold up the show, now, shield-sister."
I should hardly think so. I was honestly hoping for Mars, but that was taken. Barring that, I figure the most sensible place for human colonization (aside from space stations in the asteroid belt, or maybe domes on Luna) would be one of the moons of Jupiter, especially either Io or Ganymede. I figured it just made sense, proximity aside.

Just as well, the nearness could certainly be interesting from an in-character point of view. I imagine it would either lead to (as I suggested in my application) mutual distrust and possibly even open hostility, or else to cordial diplomatic relations based on mutual trade and defense. Either way, there's certainly a lot of room to work with there.
It is a moon of Jupiter- and I think among the nearer ones. It exists inside of the Jovian magnetosphere, too, I think.
I was wondering a bit on technology: I'm assuming we're far enough in the future (or far enough away from established science, anyway) that terraforming is possible, and has been successful on at least some of the stellar bodies in the Sol system. Is it then too much of a stretch, say, for humans to live on Ganymede without the use of enclosed environments/atmospheric domes and so on? Because that's kind of the assumption I went with.

But anyway:

Ruling House of Ganymede: O'Brien-Bonaparte-Stuart (referred to informally as "The Royal House O'Brien")

Territory: The Kingdom of Ganymede

History: Among the younger ruling dynasties in the Solar System, the O'Brien clan traces its beginnings three generations back to James O'Brien, a human born on Earth. Well-educated and utterly unscrupulous, O'Brien was in his time notorious as the most skilled and cunning thief alive. After stealing priceless art and artifacts from dozens of museums, and breaking out of nearly as many prisons, he declared that the challenges of Earth "bored" him. Striking out for Ganymede, a moon of Jupiter then in a state of anarchic flux, he produced papers detailing his lineage, and claimed descent from several notable human royal lines. Gaining followers by both his wealth and his exceptional skill at oratory, he rallied the populace and seized control of one of the poorer locales in the system. Now remembered as "Mad King Jim," he is celebrated as something of a folk hero by the common people, a perception encouraged by the ruling regime

The O'Brien's generally regard themselves as outsiders relative to the other dynasties, feeling themselves looked down upon by the rulers of wealthier, more populous territories. This is especially true of Jupiter, whose denizens are seen as untrustworthy and decadent. It is not uncommon to see a member of the ruling court suspiciously make the sign of the horns toward Jupiter, when the planet fills the sky with red. Although monarchs in name, the King is held in check by a written constitution, and can theoretically be deposed by the Great Assembly, a unicameral legislature. This notion to popular sovereignty is alluded to in the title "King of the Ganymedians," who rule the people as citizens, not the land itself as despot. In practice the monarch has a somewhat greater degree of power than most constitutional rulers, being the chief executive, the commander in chief of the military, and having the unilateral power to declare war, negotiate treaties, veto or even dissolve the Assembly, and to raise commoners to noble rank.

Hehehe. I might just have to give Sir Benny a reason to turn around at the border, so Wrathia can have a chance to try and kill him.
Interesting, indeed. I'm wondering what series of events would lead space colonists to adopt Monarchism...
WileyCoyote said EVERYBODY ELSE For anyone who made their character come from somewhere specific they made up for themselves that you would like included on the map, please give me the official name/spelling and like a short description of the makeup of the land/village, it's people, and/or whatever specific details you think would be important for people to know should your specific place ever need to be used by us in the rp for more than just reference. Otherwise I'll have to guesstimate it from whatever you have listed in your CS and I don't want to mess anything up. If you're alright with being just generally from Merovah or the valleys, that's fine too, I just want to make sure. (:

Glad to hear we'll be getting a cartographer. I hope this is helpful- I tried to PM it to you, but I kept getting the "The Guild is down" error message... So I figured I'd just post it here:

I never really specified exactly where in Merovah Sir Benjamin was from, since the initial post didn't contain too many specifics about the layout of the country. Actually, I was kind of under the impression that Merovah was not so much one state as much as a series of loosely-aligned petty kingdoms, separated by politics, culture, and religion and stuff. But that's neither here nor there. I figured Benjamin was from somewhere southish, in sort of a wealthy area with good farmland and stuff. I never named the castle settlement he grew up in, but I think it should be called Redwall, maybe after a reddish stone its built from. I figured that would be appropriate, since I mentioned in passing that Sir Benny's previous arms (before he changed them to broken shackles) was a red tower, so presumably he chose the design in honor of his family home. Since it's the seat of power for a fairly important noble family, the castle itself would be large and well-built, as much for comfort as for defense. The settlement would be either a large village or a small town, mostly agricultural, maybe with a smattering of cottage industry or even a bit of mining, or something.

The "small fortified keep" that he and his nascent little branch of the family is given by Lord Jorik Siskus would be somewhat less impressive. Probably just a glorified manor home with a wall and a three or four towers around it. I didn't bother to name it either, but I think "Broadshield Hall" would be appropriate. Being a bit of an egotist, it would be just like Sir Benjamin to rename his new residence after himself. It would probably be close to a farming village not far away, the fields worked by a mixed bag of serfs, freemen, and slaves. I never described the location of Broadshield Hall relative to Redwall, either- I figure it'd be fairly close by, in lands controlled by the senior branch of the Siskus family. Anywhere you want to put it, really, would be okay by me.

But anyway, I'm rambling.
Hehehe, without a doubt.

Is that interest, then, or were you just seizing the chance to make a joke?
Ditto, more or less.
Back in the old days, when Humanity had only just left the ole Cradle of Civilization, space was pretty much a strictly military-scientific realm. Your average John Q. Astronaut or Yuri Alexeivich Cosmonaut had a pretty hard time unwinding out in the void. Them days are past- and I mean long past. You got bars, casinos, whole resorts orbiting this or that little star, millions upon millions of miles from Earth. But that's mostly in the centers of commerce and industry, and along the major trade routes, where humans rub shoulders with all kinds of funky-looking aliens. Some of 'em friendly, and some of 'em a bit touchy when you bring up probes and cattle mutilations. But we're a long way from center, friend. A good long way, as it happens. Out here, long-haul freighter captains and hard-drinkin' miners are your most common sort, and never mind the pirates.

But I thank ya for choosing the Asimov Lounge on good ol' Tsiolkovsky Station anyway. It's the best saloon this side of Alpha Centauri, if I might say so myself. Might not look like much- but we serve as a much needed oasis for folks that find themselves out this way, humans and otherwise. Little known fact- the Grays just love Mojitos. Did'ya know that? It's true. Just about anything with rum in it, really. I'm dead serious, they'll drink down Admiral Nelson like it's Pinot Noir, and then talk about its wonderful bouquet- whatever the Hell that even means when you're talking about hard liquor.

But I'm ramblin'. If you're a miner, a small time courier, or a "gentleman of the spacelanes," this is the place for you, friend. And if you're after gainful employment, I hear the station is hiring on new hands in most sections. Did y'hear? Dreadful accident last week in the airlock, wiped out a lot of good people. We held a little party in here, actually, in memory of the honored dead, and all that. If yer not really qualified for government work, I could actually use a few more employees, since Jack and Linda called it quits and moved back to Mars. Weren't cut out for life out here, I guess. Some of the other shopkeepers on Main Street- that's what we like to call the Promenade, Main Street- are looking for folks. Hell, there's even a couple of open storefronts, if you got a bit of capital stored up.

Anyhow, I'm Dan O'Brien, I own this fine establishment. Now, are you gonna let me gab all day, or are you gonna order a drink?
So, if my rambling intro didn't give you the general idea (or if you're the tl;dr type), this RP is supposed to center on the bar (Asimov's) on a space station (Tsiolkovsky) in an out of the way part Human space. If you're clever, or if you bothered to read the title of this thread, you will have noticed I'm going for kind of a Cheers in space kind of thing. The notion is, in no small part, inspired by Geoffrey Silt's RP "Space Station Starting," and my bartender character in that little thread. Since we're focusing on the bar, and, presumably, the regulars in said establishment, it would make sense if your character lived and worked aboard the station. Aside from that, I'm pretty much open when it comes to characters. Merchants, hard-ass cops, pirates, barflies, cocktail waitresses, scientists, musicians, itinerant vagrants, whatever. Want to play an alien? Please do! I'd love to see some weird, exotic aliens get into the mix on this. I'm going for kind of light-hearted, not totally serious, but not quite totally silly. So, I guess, funny, but not in a stupid kind of way.

Anyway, if this strikes your fancy, leave a comment to that effect, and maybe we can get this off the ground.
