I feel the demons are like placing all your tricks on the table at once. Wyvern was kinda introducing troubles for us on a more personal level; you could see them start to build up pretty quickly and how they'd tie everyone into a bigger conflict.
If you're going to introduce demons that's fine, but you at least need a better, longer lead up, and more personal involvement from the characters.

"Hmm..." James considered briefly, staring at the sky. "Not anymore. If you do it long enough, you learn to suppress such things. There are always more important things to worry about than the life of some street thug. In war, for example, you dehumanize the enemy. They are less than human. They're scum, the enemy, and they don't deserve your sympathy. Thoughts like this are what keep men from giving up on the battlefield."

How? This is the conflict for BKburke's character. He is a good person who looks out for his people, but is met with ignorance and distrust. Everywhere he goes he must strive to show people the good person he is
