No one ever said that Peeta and Katniss were the first to attempt suicide in the arena, period.

They were the first to get down to the final two and then attempt dual-suicide, thus preventing the game from having a winner. Which is completely different. You can commit suicide at any other point in the game and the only reaction you could get out of the Capitol would be a mildly disappointed audience. It's not the same giant middle finger as stopping them from having one single winner.

Also they attributed the increased ice to the ozone hole recovering, not global warming decreasing. These two are not the same thing.
