Internet may as well not exist at home now, so posting is going to be really, really spotty for me for the foreseeable future.
Crimson's correct. First Officer is who takes charge when the captain is not available as well as being the captain's chief advisor. It's the same thing as a First Mate.

Chief Science Officer heads the upkeep of computer systems and communications equipment, as well as guiding scientific research.

Chief Engineer keeps the ship running.

Chief Medical Officer is obvious, I hope.
For some reason, my post didn't go through.

Anyway, if either of you want to be Chief of Security, you're welcome to it. We also need chief officers in medical, engineering, and science as well as a First Officer before beginning.
I'll try to post this weekend, but some of my birthday gifts just came in (Metroid Prime 2 and Metroid Prime 3, with Metroid Prime and Other M arriving later, possibly tomorrow). School's been eating up a lot of my time lately, so I haven't gotten much time to do any RP at all lately, and now I've got Metroid eating up what free time I have (gaming takes priority over RP for me, which is why I try to be in slow-moving RP's like this one).
Keep in mind the crew is its own self-contained nation, in a way. Due to the temporal distortions of lightspeed travel, a forty year voyage will fpbe mere weeks for us, which means we're our own little mobile nation. We'll need researchers because of this, and hydroponic farmers. So not all positions have to be essential to actual ship operation, even though the ship is quite large.
Heh. I just looked it up again. Not only is it dead, but he actually tried to have gunpowder weapons as ship turrets. I almost bust out laughing when I saw that.

EDIT: Fixed the OP so that the CS template hider shows up.
Yeah, it is basically a version of quantum entanglement.

I figured most people would agree, which is why I did my own using principles and tech most people can agree with.

Maybe I'll keep that in mind if I end up building one myself.
Well, since I am taking advantage of how the books focused on only a few groups out of what was likely thousands of businesses, any ideas for corporations would be very much welcome.
And it's really only the physics and a couple of races that makes it labelled that way. I probably should have labelled it a bit differently.
You don't have to understand them from the get-go. Just have your character be oblivious to the physics, and then perhaps they can be explained better through IC means.
