So?

Yah, I think the guild's period of intense instability has caused a lot of trouble for some players. At this point I'm unsure of what to do, so I guess we'll have a roll call?

Shout out if you're still with us. I'll reorganise the missions to accommodate for missing players.

So is there an airfield that I can base at? I see mentions of a newly captured one, but I presume there are already posts established in the area.McChord and Fairchild are too far out.

Maybe I could assign you a mission to capture one?

Sorry for the vanishing act. Guild kept going down when I was on.

Tell me about it. Lost an entire post yesterday. I am a stupid twat for not typing it up in Word, but still. My RP has been destroyed by it as well, which is frustrating. I love the guild, but these buggy periods are really putting me off, especially when they come out of no where. Here's to hoping Mahz is doing something about it.

Seeing as this RP has ground to a sudden halt, which is no doubt as a result of the crazy way the guild is behaving, should we give things a couple of days to simmer down? Actually, there's no guarantee things will settle down. Meh. I'll aim to re-write my post today, in Word this time, so the guild can't f**k me in the arse again.
Tales of War: Le Château '40

TL;DR – A multi-nation platoon of Allied soldiers hold a French manor house in the face of a German attack during the Battle of Dunkirk.

The Battle of Dunkirk was a series of tenacious defences by the British Expeditionary Force, the French Army, and a mash of depleted Belgian, Dutch and Polish units against the unyielding might of the Third Reich’s lightning advance into France.

With their backs to the sea, the Allies fought to stave off a certain defeat long enough for the Royal Navy to evacuate the bulk of the troops stationed in and around Dunkirk.

You are part of a multi-national platoon formed from the shattered remnants of Allied forces fighting in France. Having spent the last three days fighting through swarms of German reinforcements and assaults in a chaotic run of the gauntlet, you and your brothers-in-arms have finally made it into the safety of Allied lines.

Though, the safety is short lived. Having only sat down long enough to light yourself a cigarette, artillery sounds in the distance – and it’s not coming from behind you, but in front. Seconds pass, and then explosions erupt up and down the meagre defences you have found yourself surrounded by. Men run to and throe, throwing themselves behind shallow dugouts and dilapidated sandbags. Tank engines roar to life, but again, the sound is coming from further inland.

Had God smiled on you, what came roaring out of the hedges and sparse woodland of northern France would have been an Allied armoured unit trying to reach safety. He didn’t smile on you though, and any hope of winning this war fades from you as a dozen German panzers surge from cover. Hundreds of infantry are at their backs, and within seconds, the air is thick with lead and shrapnel.

You and your multi-national brothers in arms, the ones you’ve fought besides during the entire retreat, decide to enact what every man in a five mile-radius is thinking: RUN

Your “tactical withdrawal” is swift, and by now you’ve gotten good at such manoeuvres. Sprinting blindly, you and your platoon hop trenches, dive over dragons teeth and disappear into the shrubby bogs behind the shattered line. Bullets and mortar rounds chase you, but you keep on, and though many are slain, enough familiar faces make it to a safe distance from the slaughter.

Upon a hill, and laced with layers of thick hedges, you come across a derelict château. It’s a large building, made of solid Napoleon-era architecture and standing four floors tall. The smouldering tail of an Amiot fighter plane sticks out of the Château’s west wing, but aside from the wisps of smoke, the place seems still and deserted.

The battle against the German panzers wages on behind you, but you know it is lost, and are thankful your platoon has no official commanding officer – otherwise, no doubt you’d of been ordered to stand your ground and die a dog’s death against an enemy that cannot be beaten.

Still. The Frenchmen among you are bitter; their country is falling down around them, and their ancestral enemy is raping their national pride. For them, they are done with running. The Belgians and the Dutch develop a similar mentality. The English? They just fled from a battle; a coward’s tale is a shameful and potentially fatal one.

Four miles to the west, and the Germans will be at Dunkirk. 400,000 fighting men will be trapped and every last strand of hope for Free Europe’s survival will fade. The château appears to be a blind spot in the Allies’ defensive measures, or perhaps, they hadn’t planned for the line in the area to buckle so readily. Your platoon makes a unanimous decision to hold the building and its approaches against whatever lurches from the rising smoke in the distance.

Rules/Advisories

- You must be able to piece together paragraphs that make sense to the reader.

- In-depth knowledge of World War Two is not required, though any knowledge at all will help you.

- No controlling other peoples’ characters without their consent.

- No God Modding (really? Who would have thought?)

- No sexual adventures in one of the Château’s many bedrooms.

- Not everyone in the platoon speaks the same language. Consider this when communicating with other characters. Sign language may replace the tongue in some situations.

- Western armies did not (and still don’t, really) typically employ women in frontline roles, because they have boobs and can’t shoot guns, constantly complain when they have to walk far, and get so emotional they’ll likely break down and cry. Bull shit to that sexist nonsense, I say. In the chaos of Dunkirk, I’m going to permit a French/Dutch/Belgian woman with a rifle. Any history nerds can chew my rod of not caring. Equality, yo!

- The Germans the platoon is up against are professional soldiers, and will generally not be seen doing stupid stuff. Consider this when you “mow down the mindless drones of the Third Reich as they charge across open ground with no covering fire”. I’ll raise an eye at this kind of stuff, and spawn a T-90 main battle tank from the future onto your guy/gal’s head.

- Ammunition is a thing. Your guy/gal doesn’t carry unlimited ammo. The German weapons might seem appealing, if you can get close to enough to their corpses.

- Tanks are scary.

- Being shot at is scary.

- Planes are scary.

- Incoming artillery is really scary.

Character Sheet

Please post in OOC

Character Name:

Character Gender:

Character’s Explanation of Being at the Manor (Female characters only): The intro already states why the soldiers are there, but anyone wanting to pursue a female character will have to explain her presence – so that we keep some historical credibility. An example would be that she was simply a refugee caught up in the fighting, and forced to pick up a weapon to defend herself, before she got dragged along by the platoon in the chaos of the retreat.

Character Age:

Character Rank: Nothing higher than a Staff Sergeant or equivalent. The platoon has no official commanding officer.

Character Nationality: English, French, Dutch, Polish or Belgian.

Things the Other Soldiers Will Know About Your Character: No need for in depth history of how your guy/gal grew up in the shadow of an arms factory, and had to survive on cabbage soup for twenty years until war broke out and they got all murdery. However, the soldiers you have spent the last three days will know certain things about your character. These things would include: Any temper issues, any linguistic advantages/disadvantages, any significant injuries of note, any significant background information of note, and any notable skills your character may have.

Weapons and Ammunition: Fairly straight forwards. List the weapons and amount of ammunition your character is carrying. Bear in mind that your character only has one back, and two arms. The RP is also set in late may/early June of 1940, so no weapons that were developed after that time. This will serve as a test to your Rping integrity.

Items of Interest: Anything like compasses, mirrors, tools – anything that might be useful.

Appearance: A text description, or a picture if you’re lazy.

Brain fried? Personality change? Memory loss? Concentration deduction? Looks like someone needs to go and see Gregory House M.D.

I only realised yesterday/day before the site is actually working. Had to tend to my RP first because bitches were desperate for some input. Will get a post up today. I think.

I'm a bit confused with the latest update. Is the airfield under Yakima control? I said it was in the outcome of my post (and assumed its occupation happened "off-screen" because writing a post about the occupation itself would be boring). If so, are we still supposed to hold it? I'm not sure how happy Hathaway would be if he were ordered to completely abandon the airfield after having lost so much to take it. Not to mention it'd be unwise to leave it undefended. So, is it okay if we assume that (for my next post) Hathaway is leaving a good chunk of his force behind to defend it?Another thing - Goldendale was taken in my first post. I don't think I specified it in the outcome, but I've pretty much been assuming that Hathaway left a few dudes there to defend it. Probably not much - maybe two dozen lightly armed guys. So.. I'll assume I can pretend there are some guys there and maybe make a post about them holding off an assault.Either way, this is going to be awkward. This is actually kinda troubling ;P I've been playing Hathaway as a guy who would do his best not to harm NCR soldiers, and ideally I'd want him to avoid getting pinned against them. But obviously he's not in control of that. His own men are against fighting NCR troops, too. This is going to make him pull his hair out. Good for story though. I just have to figure out how to have him worm his way out of this one.

The whole "but I love my former countrymen" tune really struck a sympathetic rhythm with me, so naturally I created a situation where Hathaway is either force to yield the bridge to the NCR, or engage them. There is no right or wrong outcome in any situation, within this RP.

Again, the whole "I lost my boys taking this darn-tooting airfield" struck a similar note. Hathaway now has an option to become disillusioned with President Clearwater's cavalry-charging mentality, whereby he seems prepared to chuck clumps of his soldiers at any crisis, without thinking twice. Perhaps Hathaway says "screw this, I'm not pitting my boys against that!", or "why don't I just take New Dalles anyways, and flank around the NCR? Maybe that'll scare 'em off"

I'll make the point here and now, that people do not need to follow their orders to the word, or at all, really. There will be IC repercussions for certain behaviour, or for totally going against the President's wishes, but I'm not going to boot anyone out of the RP for getting creative with the given subject-matter.

And yes, that's fine for Goldendale. I purposely left details of the village's state to one's imagination, to give you guys maximum creative freedom.

@Darcs, your mission will begin mid-battle, in case it wasn't clear. You've cut the NCR's attack in half, with some of them (100) to the north of you, heading towards Goldendale, and the rest to the south, preparing to surge through you. (600)

Again, you do have the option to say "fuck this!", especially if Hathaway makes a likewise decision.

LordZell, am I correct in my interpretation of your post that the 1st Republic Hunters Battalion has fled from Sunnyside Municipal Airport? It was my understanding that there was a large stockpile of supplies in the airport that the 7th Freedom Brigade intended to use to retake Sunnyside. Do they now have access to that stockpile?

Shhhh don't tell him what he's done wrong, I was going to make it a surprise.
Game Turn: Three
Operation: To Blunt A Spear

Conflict: The Township Proxy War, Late

Location: Washington State Border (South).

Combatants: Yakima Republic vs North California Republic

Back Story: As the Township of New Dalles was brought to its knees in a thunderous display of the Yakima Republic's overwhelming fire power, a hidden player at the table lost their discretion.

When the troops of the 1st Mechanized Infantry Battalion were ordered to annex the town of New Dalles, and in doing so end the war between the Township and the Republic, someone was listening. Every belch of radio static, every word, whisper, sigh and breath omitted over the Yakima Republic's rudimentary communications network has been carefully intercepted, analysed and developed into a weapon.

A battalion strength unit of what are undeniably NCR troopers have appeared seemingly out of nowhere, obviously mustered from an outpost nearby not known to us. They have ignored the planned assault on New Dalles, and have instead thrown themselves against the eastern bridge.

With the mechanised infantry busy preparing for an assault over by Dalles Airport, it fell to the 8th Underground and Recon Division to hastily redeploy to the eastern bridge, in an attempt to halt the NCR's brazen attack. They arrived in good time, but not quick enough to stop a few platoons of NCR troopers from cutting their way through the bridge's meagre defences, and moving onto towards Goldendale.

Realising that the YR's southern borders were in fact facing a full scale invasion from the NCR, the President has aborted all operations concerning the annexation of New Dalles, and has immediately ordered the beaten and bloodied 1st Mechanized Infantry Battalion to rush to the 8th Underground and Recon's aid.

Operations Map

Missions:

Refer to Operations Map for corresponding mission numbers.

Mission #1

Republican Armies Involved: 1st Mechanized Infantry Battalion, 8th Underground and Recon Division

Mission Objective:

The 8th Underground Recon Division is to hold the eastern bridge against a determined NCR assault, whilst the 1st Mechanised is to rush to the division's aid before it is overwhelmed.

Victory Parameters:

1) Hold the eastern bridge against the NCR.

2) Rout or destroy the NCR battalion.

3) Purge Goldendale of NCR advance parties. (Optional)

Defeat Conditions:

1) Lose the bridge to the NCR.

2) Purge Goldendale of NCR advance parties, and establish new line of defence. (Optional)

Enemy Strength:

These are no mercenaries. The Bear is here, and in force. There was no warning, and until now, we thought a war between the two republics was years away.

How wrong we were.

The NCR soldier is a second-rate professional, usually a conscript fighting for a government that hardly cares for him, or her. Their morale is usually average, and hinges around their battlefield dominance. Their weapons are standardised, and the average infantryman carries a Service Rifle. Grenade launchers, light machineguns and sniper rifles bolster the NCR's armoury.

Their understanding of military tactics is impressive, so expect them to be smarter than anything we've faced this far.

Their weaknesses? Morale. These soldiers are tired of killing tribals, so that some fat bastard back home can rake in the money. Once they hit something as solid as a stone wall, their enthusiasm for slaughtering defenceless villagers will quickly collapse. Were we facing Rangers, or another elite unit, then victory would not be an option. However, if you make these bastards bleed enough, they'll run sooner or later.

Troop Numbers:

600 - East Bridge

100 - Goldendale

Gah, sorry for my prolonged absence, I just got back from travelling for Thanksgiving and I really should have given you guys a warning before I disappeared. I understand if this RP has progressed without me, though I must say that that'd be rather disappointing. Anyway, I'll kick myself into action and try to get my General Sheet out ASAP. I have some family coming over today, but with any luck I'll still be able to finish the sheet by tonight.I'm really sorry for my absence, it was rude of me not to inform you guys beforehand.

No problem. Nothing has progressed too far for your entry, and indeed, the Republic needs some more men.

Darcs said
That may have just been a lack of communication as for the bridge, my orders seemed to imply it was still being heavily overseen if not directly controlled by the township

My bad for not specifying. I meant that the Township was watching the bridge from its side of the river, and that you'd have to get past the guards/scouts/emplacements/whatever on their end before proceeding to New Dalles. Looks like everything worked out though. :D

So I might just come in with Pepper on this thing. I'm thinking about having an air corps of sorts. At this point it'd only be on paper (no planes, no Vertibirds yet assuming Vertibird guy is gone from this) and acting as a scavenge and repair force to recover oldworld tech and planes before eventually starting it up in the future after some hard work, kind of like the Boomers.

I'd see no issues with this.

Darcs said
I wholeheartedly support the interaction between the generals for this specific reason. We'll greater outline differences between characters like Aesir and Hathaway-- one is actually trained and experienced as a soldier and a general, maybe even knows some NCR strategy. The other is just a sneaky wastelander mutie with a following and a mostly aesthetic title.

After the Unification War winds down (the fall of Sunnyside, and destruction of the 7th Freedom Brigade), and the Township Proxy War meets its conclusion (your next mission), then everyone will be getting together with the President to decide Yakima's foreign policy on a number of issues. More domestic matters will also be brought to the players' attention, and the direction in which the YR grows will then be mostly down to them.

It was having some problems a day or two ago, but it's back again.

That can't be right, I tried again last night. Just get a white page and a little message from Mahz saying he's doing work on it. Been the same for a few days now. Maybe he's blocked IPs outside of the U.S temporarily? I'll do some digging when I get in. Can't do jack with my phone, I'm afraid.
Wait, this site working for you guys? I aint been able to log in with my comp for days, but my phone managed it no probs? What gives?
Orders posted. A nice frontal assault/flanking manoeuvre right there for ya.

Hands up if you're still in this, and need an assignment. Warthog, I know you're busy, but do you still intend on taking that mountain? If so, stay the course. As your mission didn't really start in turn one, we'll move it into turn two.
