Philosophy and morality aside, my point was that there's a stark difference between the continual conciousness of the download method versus serial reincarnation in the clone method, one that would have a huge effect on the morale of the troops.
And well... isn't that the entire point of the game..? Trying to humanise the concept too much for an RP will kill it stone dead. Getting too heavy on the details is what fucks a soldier's mind up; unless we're going for a PTSD themed RP, its kind of a moot point.

I'm not so sure. Having a backup without your current memories would be tantamount to a clone of you and not actually you if you see what I mean. So for the individual dying it would be true death with no continuity of conciousness between old and new bodies. I reckon that would be a damn sight scarier than dealing with a personality upload (although granted, both seem pretty bloody traumatising).

I remember reading a Planetside 1 fanfic a few years ago called The Triumvirate. The way it represented the war was generally more in line with a modern one, so people died a lot less often and respawning was a rare occurrence; after nine or ten respawns, the failure rate rose dramatically to something like 40-50% due to digital copying errors in the DNA. Basically a soldier had a serving life of about eight respawns before it was no longer safe for him to be on the front line.
Another idea would be a simple broad spectrum jammer; if someone does, how does their conciousness get transferred to the new body? If you jam that signal, then the conciousness stays with the corpse and the rebirthed body is uh... empty.
Or headshots. Perhaps headshots destroy the brain before the mind can be transferred properly.
Plenty of ideas floating around for that.

Description
Standing at around 6"4", Ivor's most distinguishing feature is his impressive figure, complete with broad shoulders and a wide set stance. His hair is a dirty blonde and often a tad longer than the regulation buzz cut, but he hides it with a cap when off duty. On those rare occasions when he isn't in a full combat suit, Ivor can often be found lazing about in jeans and old shirts, all semblance of military discipline gone.

Background
The Faulkner family has not always been ardent patriots of the Republic. In the past, members have been everything from disgruntled unionists and malcontents to full-blown rebels and insurrectionists; many Faulkners have died fighting against the ideals that Ivor holds so dear. Born in a hydroponic farming community, he would likely have led a mediocre life if the New Conglomerate hadn't decided to make an example of them. While the details of the attack are hazy, the end result was Ivor spending his formative years in a TR orphanage, learning the important things from the school of hard knocks; honour, justice, duty and undying loyalty to the Terran Republic. Naturally he signed up as soon as he was able, although it was years before he was assigned to a combat unit.

Personality
Ivor is both the most motivated and lazy person you will ever meet. While this may seem paradoxical, it is a result of a lifetime's education and political indoctrination; when on duty, Ivor knuckles down to do his job as best he can and when off-duty he just lazes about, waiting for the next call to arms. Regardless of where he is, Ivor's dry sense of humour and fierce loyalty to his comrades makes him an easy to like, low maintenance member of the team. Just don't get him drunk.

Other
Ivor is fully trained on the operation of MAX suits, competent in every MAX weapon in the TR arsenal. This comes at a cost however; all that time spent training on MAXing means that he barely had time to learn how to handle a Flash, let alone a real combat vehicle.
