Why do you think I said that, if the sound blast was an acceptable part of the evolution of his powers, that the stronger it gets, the more likely he is to cause disorientation and even headaches to himself?
So, let me list out some clarifications with his powers:

1. He controls the sound waves, not the source of the sound.
2. Volume amplification or muffling allows everyone to hear the sudden spike or decline in loudness, but he can only do this for sounds he locks on.
3. I haven't figured out a possible solution for sudden loud noises, although what Sep suggested -sending out muffling sound waves of his own to sort of lessen the effect it has on his ears- sounds plausible.
He makes ACTUAL sounds louder or quieter, but only those he focuses on. He doesn't manipulate perceptions, he manipulates the sound waves itself.
I don't know how amplifying or cushioning a sound source falls more under air magic than it does the ability to manipulate sound itself. o_O

As for the rest of your post though, I get my powers' boundaries now. However, have you played the game Skyrim? If not, the main character has this thing called "Shouts": if s/he shouts a certain word or groups of words, it can create various effects such as breathing out fire or an icy blast. I was wondering if that would be out of the realm of my character, to bellow a powerful sound blast, low in frequency. Of course, this would have drawbacks to him as well, as he can become disorientated after using it because of his sensitivity to sound. He also cannot use in closed spaces, as that actually guarantees disorientation and possibly, massive headaches.
I think you guys missed my question. Can't really finish my CS without your input, so..

"So basically, what are his limits when it comes to sound manipulation? He can't control the volume of sounds anymore, is that what you are saying? Or that he can control the volume of a sound source, but other sounds are still going to disrupt his focus, so it messes him up, right?"
I would think the common language would basically be English, but called something different? Or would you guys want to create an entirely new language?
Ellri said It was not controlling sound source that was OP. It was controlling what you hear that is OP. You can naturally focus on a certain set of sounds, but that happens between ears and consciousness (i.e. in brain). The ears still take in the other sounds. Only by covering them up with something can you prevent them from taking in sound. As such, noises of high volume close by will be dangerous to anyone, especially someone who relies upon hearing to "see".

You can't exactly focus on whispers at the other side of the room if someone is banging on a gong right beside you. Just as most can't focus well if someone keeps screaming in their ears.

if noises go above a certain intensity, it will be harmful to anyone nearby. Thankfully, that intensity isn't easy to reach. Especially not in medieval times.

I feel like I should make my character a short to mid-ranged character in order for it to be really viable here. :'( Bye bye blind fantasy archer.

Also Ellri, you mentioned how controlling a sound source is OP, while controlling wavelengths is not. Can you explain the difference? Sorry, I'm a dimwitted person and I understand things differently, so I ask for your patience.
