Nah, solar flare (or coronal mass ejection) wouldn't take out a plane. Might give the passengers a nasty dose of radiation though. Power would be knocked out for the ground though.

Maybe a power station is knocked out to delay the rescuers, and the plane went down due to weather?

Private plane ... Hmmm ... I'd prefer to be strangers, and in that situation, everyone would already have to know each other

And it could be that they rescuers can't get to the site, or will take a while to. Weather conditions and such.
