Katie - Haywood - Bex

Katie looked up at the voice. She knew him. He was one of her daddy's men. A man from back in the underground.
She gazed up at him, her wide blue eyes filled with tears and sadness. She hiccupped a few times.
She looked back at Lauren's body. Leaning down, she hugged her one last time. "I'm sorry," she told the woman.

Looking back up, she wiped her good arm over her face, smearing blood in the process. She raised her arms up to Bex, not wanting or really being able to walk. At this point she didn't care anymore what was going on. She just wanted to be held by someone she trusted, someone who would tell her everything would be okay.
Bex would take her to her daddy.
Then everything would be okay.
Katie - Haywood - All Hell Breaks Loose

Lauren came out shouting. Katie had wanted Emma, but Lauren would help too. She knew she would. Despite all she said, she knew Lauren would help her.
Katie shrank back in fear when Lauren started wielding a gun. Why did Lauren have a gun? Guns were bad. Guns hurt people. A gun had hurt Katie.
Then things started to happen too fast.
Lauren was shouting, calling her daddy names.
Her daddy was shouting, saying Lauren was going to shoot Katie.
Then something happened that would forever scar the small child.

It seemed to happen in slow motion. There were shots fired. With each shot, Lauren's body jerked like a puppet. She turned towards Katie as she fell. Katie was looking into her eyes, seeing the shock and pain there, right when her face exploded.
Katie screamed as blooded splattered everywhere, getting on Katie clothes, hair and face.
"LAUREN!!!" she screamed, pulling out of Shannon's now limp grip and running to her fallen friend. "No! No, Lauren!" she started shaking the dead woman. "Come back! Come back!" Laying her head on Lauren's shoulder Katie pleaded and sobbed. "Lauren... Lauren come back... please... I'm sorry! I'm sorry! Come back!"

It was all her fault. If she hadn't thrown a fit then Lauren wouldn't have been shot. It was all her fault... all her fault...
"I'm sorry," she cried. "I'm sorry. I'm sorry."
The words kept spilling from her, she was unable to stop them.
It was all her fault.
Everything was her fault.

She ended up curled in a little ball next to Lauren's body, covered in her blood and rocking back and forth. The child had been through so much in her young life, had made it through things that would break some adults.
But this... to be looking into someone's eyes as they died... this was her breaking point. Seeing the woman who was her friend, who had practically helped raise her, who had saved her in the underground from the monsters and had taken care of her out in the woods...
Katie didn't want to close her eyes. When she did, she kept seeing Lauren's face explode over and over.

Her fault...
All her fault...
Maya - Hallway - Bart, Stranger (aka Angelo)

Maya hid behind Bart as a man started talking. He was definitely a stranger. He wasn't crazy like the splicers. Not yet anyway. Then he spoke of coming on a submarine. Was the welcome center still operational? She hadn't really thought to look since that place was pretty much picked clean.
Then he said something that really got her attention. He was an engineer! He could fix Bart! She didn't have to lose him!

Forgetting to be careful in her excitement at the thought of Bart being fixed.
"You can fix him?!" she exclaimed hopefully.
Bart, being the protective Big Daddy that he was, moved his drill in front of her, daring the man to try and approach.
"It's okay Bart," she said, patting his arm above the drill. "It's okay. He can help us."
The thing seemed to think about her words. Her gentle calm tone help calm him down as well. He slowly lowered the drill, but still seemed weary of the stranger before them. If he so much as tried to touch Maya the Big Daddy would not hesitate to kill him.

"I'm Maya," she told the dark haired man carefully, still not going any closer to protect herself and him.
Jessalyn - Haywood - Riley, Audrey, Stranger (aka Alex)

Relief flooded her limbs when she heard the doctor's voice. She tried to relax but just ended up tensing up again as another contraction hit her. They were coming fast.
Too fast.
"Doctor?" she questioned, her voice laced with pain. "Why are they coming so close together? Shouldn't they be farther apart?" she asked, scared that something was wrong with her baby.
When the raider asked how he could help she wanted to scream at him to get the hell away from her, but she stopped herself. He was offering to help and not threatening to kill them. That was something at least.
"Please," she looked at him pleadingly. "Don't let anyone in here. No guns around my baby. I don't want one going off and-" another contraction seized her and she nearly screamed in pain. Whether it was the stress she had been under or just the way things were, the baby was coming very fast.
Katie - Haywood - Standoff

"No!" Katie screamed when someone grabbed her, holding her back, keeping her away from her daddy.
She realized it was Shannon. Shannon was trying to keep her from her daddy?! She had not really liked Shannon before, but now she nearly hated her.
"Let go! Let go! Let go!" she screamed, trying to pull away from the woman's grip. She looked wild-eyed at Tyler. "Daddy!" she screamed, reaching out for him, her arm pulling from it's sling, revealing her bandaged shoulder. It hurt to stretch out but she didn't care. She grasped at the air, her little fingers clawing at the air trying to reach him.
"I want my daddy," she sobbed little girl tears that would touch even the most cold-hearted person. "I want my daddy! Let go! Emma!" she screamed, wanting her only friend to come and make everything better. "Emma! Make her let go!"

Turning back to Shannon, she tried to pry the woman's fingers from her arm. "Please let go! I'll be good! I'll never talk back or be rude or spy on people ever again! I'll never do anything bad ever again! I just want my daddy! Please," she begged her.

When the woman didn't let go, Katie sank to the ground defeated. "I want Emma," she cried, sobbing into her hands. Emma would make the woman let go. Emma would take her to her daddy.
Then the kinda scary man, Daniel, started talking. He said her daddy had Emma with him and he wanted Emma back before he would let Katie go to her daddy. Katie looked back at her daddy. He had Emma with him?
"Where's -hic- Emma?" she asked, now starting to hiccup from crying so much. "I wan-hic-t Emma and my dad-hic-dy."
Maya - the tunnel between the Medical Center and the Welcome Center - Bart

Why was she here? She had been through this place a million times already. Maybe she was hoping for new bodies to loot? Or perhaps she'd find a vending machine that hadn't been hacked yet and try her hand at it. She had been practicing and was getting better at it. If only she was better at fixing things, like Bart's inner workings. Even now as he walked she could see the slight jerk in his step that was getting worse.
Maybe it was time to look into the plasmids... find one that was for mechanical knowledge...

No! No! She didn't want to become like them! The crazy lunatic splicers. Adam had done that to them, turned them into the... things they were now. She refused to become like that.
But what if it meant losing Bart.....?
It was a question she didn't like to think about. It made her want to cry.

Bart suddenly went on alert. He had heard or seen something ahead. Maya got slightly behind Bart, ready to hide behind him and get out of his way should she need to.
Katie - Haywood - Daddy!

The gunshots made Katie hit the dirt with a scream, not just out of fear but out of pain because she hurt her injured shoulder when she hit the ground. She covered her ears, the terror of the gunfight from a few weeks ago playing out in her mind once again. She hated this! She hated guns! They were loud and they hurt!
"Emma!" Katie screamed. "Make it stop!"

But then she heard something that changed everything.
"I want my daughter back, and any other prisoners your people have! My daughter... Katelyn."
Daughter Katelyn... that was her name... that voice...

Everything else left her mind in that instant. She didn't hear anything or anybody else. The little girl jumped to her feet with a gasp.
"Daddy?" she murmured, not sure if it was a dream or real. "Daddy?" she called louder, then squealed in excitement. "DADDY!" she screamed happily and started running for the voice.
Her daddy was here! He had come for her!

"Daddy! Daddy! Daddy!" the word became an excited mantra as she ran towards the cars, crying happily as she ran. Finally she was going to see her daddy again. Finally she was going to hug him. Finally, they were going to be together again. She would never be bad ever ever again. Never. She would always be good for the rest of her life if it meant she could have her daddy back.
"I knew you would come!" she cried, "Daddy!"
Jessalyn - Haywood building - Riley, Audrey, Intruder (aka Alex)

The door was shoved open forcefully and Jess looked up hoping to see the doctor. Instead she saw a gun.
"Please!" she cried. She could see the doctor and Audrey beyond the door, the man with the gun telling them to stop. "Please! I'm in labor!" she pleaded, praying this raider had a heart. She needed the doctor now!

A contraction hit her and she cried out in pain, crumpling to the floor. She whimpered in pain and tried to breathe like the doctor had told her to.
Screw breathing! It hurt!
The contraction passed, but she knew others were coming. "Doctor?" she called weakly, reaching out for him. "Help..."
Jessalyn - Haywood - Attack

Jess had been feeling funny ever since waking up. Restless, not being able to sit still... She had slept well the night before so it couldn't be lack of sleep. It might be depression. They hadn't found a trace of Floyd yet.

Floyd... every day she missed him... every day she prayed she'd see him again.
It was a struggle to smile so she gave up after a while. Everyone in Haywood was very nice now, looked out for each other and there were no secrets, unlike when Bruce was in charge. From the way they treated her it was like they still felt guilty about what had happened when she had last been in Haywood and were trying to make up for things.

Jess spotted the little girl running across the yard towards one of the buildings calling for Emma. She still had her little arm in a sling, but seemed to be doing just fine with it. The doctor had said that it should be taken off in a few days and then they would see if Katie could move it, but he had high hopes that she would be fine. The bullet hadn't done too much damage thankfully. It was a shame that such a thing as an innocent child getting shot in the crossfire would happen, but this was the kind of world they lived in now.

A sudden pain hit Jess and she doubled over in pain for a second. Those were starting to happen more frequently. Maybe it was time to talk to the doc about-
Suddenly someone grabbed her arm and pulled her aside as bullets started flying.
"What's happening?!" she asked.
"We're being attacked!" a young girl, Audrey, told her and pulled her inside a building for cover. "Stay here and stay away from the windows!" he said, grabbing a gun.
Jess was about to speak but was cut off by another sudden pain. She grabbed her stomach as she slid to the floor.
"What?!" Audrey asked worriedly. "Were you hit?!"
"No," Jess gasped and looked down. "My water broke..." she said, staring in disbelief at the wet patch on her pants.
"What does that mean?" she asked.
"It means get the doctor. Now."
The young girl's eyes widened as she realized what was happening. "God... oh God... CRAP! Okay just... stay here and... breathe and... just breathe!" Racing out the door, she started shouting for the doc.

Alone, Jess struggled to relax as another pain hit her like a wave. "You had to pick right now?" she asked the baby incredulously.
Her baby was about to be born in the middle of a gun battle.

Nothing was ever easy...
Can't wait! No problem I understand being busy.
Katie - Haywood - Waiting

In the days following the 'Lauren incident' as everyone was referring to it in whispers, Katie had been trying to be good for Emma. She didn't like anyone else, not even Emma's brother Daniel, who scared her a bit. The only people she would listen to and talk to were Lauren and Emma.
There wasn't much to do for a little girl. Katie met a nice lady named Jessalyn who was going to have a baby, but she wasn't comfortable around her.

She still wanted her daddy. She wished for him every day. But she was quieter about it now. No one liked him, not even Emma though she tried to hide it from Katie.
Speaking of Emma, she had nightmares regularly. She tried to hide it but Katie heard her at night. It made her feel bad for her friend. So she tried extra hard to be a good girl for Emma, do what chores she could, bring her flowers that were actually weeds but they were the best she could find, draw her pictures with scraps of paper and pieces of pencils that she found.
She was actually finishing up a picture right now. It was a picture of Emma and Katie holding hands with a heart around them. Underneath it Katie had written : I luv u.
Holding up the picture and pronouncing it perfect, although she wished she had crayons to color it and make it prettier, the little girl went off to find Emma and give it to her.
