where did everybody go?
where did everybody go?
Arysta took the food offered to her gratefully. "Thank you Kilugna," she said with a smile. "This will be plenty."
"Thank you Kil-na," Lyra said with a big grin. "My tummy is hungry," she added, patting her stomach.
Arysta took the rabbit and squirrel and got a knife to cut it into smaller pieces for Lyra. She put all of the pieces on a wooden plate. "Come and eat sweetheart," she told the toddler.
"You eat too Mommy," Lyra ordered.
"Mommy will eat later," Arysta told her. She had to make sure Lyra got her fill first.
Lyra nodded, seeming to agree with that plan before looking outside and waving at James. "Jamzz going to eat too?" she asked worried that that might not be the case.
"I'm sure he'll eat when he's hungry," Arysta assured her daughter. "It's time for you to eat now."
Lyra started eating the pieces of meat carefully. The child had already learned that every bite mattered.
Chance felt a thrill of excitement when Kodama carried her towards the tent.
"You are making me so hot Koko!" she exclaimed, giggling.
When he opened the trunk to reveal their meal and offered her the first slice she nearly teared up. "Aww," she said, looking down at the crying victim. "Isn't he so sweet?" she asked before kissing him long and hard, slipping him some tongue while she was at it.
Making out in blood? She couldn't think of a better way to spend her time.
She twirled his braided beard while she kissed him, before pulling back and slipping out of his grasp. She looked over the knives carefully, wondering which one she should use. She finally picked up a shearing knife usually used to shear sheep. It was sharpened to perfection. It would take the skin clean off.
Chance's eyes glowed orange and her teeth began to sharpen as she stood over the helpless girl. "Night night," she said in a voice that was a cross between childish and demonic. But before she could set to work Shadow made his announcement.
"Oh poo!" Chance said, returning to normal and stomping her foot. "That's just not fair!" she complained before pouting.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Esme heard the announcement and sighed. Hag wanted them all to be there to meet this 'High Father' person. Despite her confusion and aching heart she didn't want to disappoint him.
She ghosted her way to the front of the ticket booth. Her face was still grey with sadness. What she really wanted to do, if she had the courage to do it, was talk to Hag alone and ask him what he truly wanted from her. Did he want her as a sister or as something more? Either way she would stay by his side, out of choice just as much as by force since the curse he had placed her under bound her to the carnival.
But if she had to watch him romance and have sex with multiple women, she might just fade away in depression.
The young woman peeked out of the hut. The last woman had come to collect her child a few minutes ago, but several of the hunters had yet to return.
Arysta looked back towards the small child playing quietly in the corner. She smiled faintly at her beautiful daughter. Lyra had her father's eyes and his good humor.
The three year old saw her mother looking and her and stood, her hand on her stomach. "Mommy," she said. "My tummy is hungry."
"I know Lyra. The hunters will return soon. They'll have fresh meat for us to cook," Arysta said, picking her child up and cuddling her close.
It was a hard life for a widow and fatherless child. The hunters spared what they could, but they had their own families to think of. If her husband had still been alive he would provide for them. They would never have to go hungry.
"Mommy?" Lyra said, touching her mother's face gently. "Don't be sad Mommy. Please?"
Arysta forced a smile. "I'm sorry my angel. I'm not sad. Just thinking."
Lyra gave her a look that seemed too wise for a small child and laid her head against her mother's chest.
If Kane were here... if only...
Footsteps in the snow alerted her that some of the hunters had returned. Both mother and daughter peeked out.
"It's Kil-na and Jamzz!" Lyra said, mispronouncing their names as only a child could.
James had some kind of large animal. Good. Large meant a lot of meat, hopefully enough to share a little. A widow in the clan depended on the kindness of others. Thankfully Kane had been well respected and greatly liked so the clan didn't seem to mind taking care of his wife and child when they could. But during hard times a lot of people had to go without, especially those who didn't have a means of caring for their needs. Several times Arysta had gone hungry to that Lyra could eat, and even then she wouldn't be full.
so sorry guys! I wrote out a post last night but then the site went down :(
Esme was shocked. "How could he say that? Of course I appreciate him! He knows I do! I've told him I will do anything he wishes, anything he wants."
She sighed deeply. "Why does he have to be so... so...?" she couldn't even think of the word to describe it. "If he does feel more then brotherly love for me, then why does he desire the clown girl? It doesn't make sense. How can I trust him? Mortimer, within a few hours he killed me, claimed that he always loved me as his sister, kissed me like a lover and now he gets hands on with another woman. When he killed me he nearly destroyed me. I can't go through that kind of pain again. And if he wants someone like her, he could never want someone like me."
Giving a sad smile, she patted his hand. "He is lucky to have a friend like you. We are all lucky to have someone like you. You are a good soul Mortimer. I can see it."
Esme stood. "I want to be alone for a while. I need to think. I won't go far. See you later."
She disappeared from sight, reappearing across the way near one of the show tents. She wrapped her arms around herself and looked at the sky.
"Do you truly want me here Hag?" she asked aloud to herself.
That's too bad :( both Astarael's departure and that person lying to you. Both are sad and shouldn't happen.
Why do I get the feeling there will be a smack down between Esme and Chance in the future? Lol
The sound of Mortimer's voice surprised Esme. It was so different than before, stuttering but gentle and kind.
"But what if he wants the clown more? What if he's changed his mind about... loving me that way? He has kissed me as though he wants me in... the way a man wants a woman. But what if I'm wrong? Is it wrong that I... that I want him to... love me that way?"
Esme was so confused. Was she sick to want those things from her own brother. Her mind told her it was wrong, but her heart desired it. She craved that intimate contact that a man and a woman shared and she craved it from Hag.
Perhaps she was wrong. Perhaps she was damned for wanting such a thing.
She looked at Mortimer sadly and hugged him on impulse. "I'm sorry that I am putting all of this on you, but other then Hag you are the only other person I'm close to here, that I feel like I can talk to and you won't condemn me."
