Tokyo, Japan was a peaceful city until one day a pulse of unknown energy created a rift to open above the city releasing a number of invaders known as Xenomals. Hungry for flesh the Xenomals attacked every human that caught their eyes. An organization was created in order to defend the citizen of Tokyo, this organization was called the Xeno Termination & Research Association, "XTRA" for short. Squads were formed using humans with supernatural abilities, aka Pulsars. Pulsars are humans that wield special abilities and are immune to the effects given by the pulse of unknown energy. Now it has been 3 years since the first invasion and everything is peaceful... for now.

Nato was sitting at his desk after school looking out the window. Nato's friend Shinjimoto shows up carrying a basketball "Hey Nato wanna come play some basketball?" said Shinji as Nato starred blankly out the window not even noticing Shinji. Shinji gives Nato a solid punch in the head "Oy! Kistuna! Listen to me while I'm talking to you" Said Shinji. "Ow! Dammit Kagemura what was that for?!" Yelled Nato. "I was trying to get your attention!" Shinji yelled back "So you hit me on the head?!" Nato and Shinji started bickering back and forth as they normally do.

Somewhat interested. Probably jumping the gun by asking more questions before the earlier ones have answers, but I'll add something to the list:You mentioned the familiars are supposed to be based on Shinto gods, but is there any wiggle room for expanding the player characters' magic traditions to, for example, Kotodama, Shugendo, or Wu?

There is room those are just base ideas I currently could think of

It will be its own universe with a world similar to Tokyo, Japan. Various locations are to be added and expanded upon as they will be crucial to the storyline I am making.
