Building off Rax's ideas, the guys we ran into could have been advance troops/scouts. Their full army could arrive later enough that we have plenty of time to recover, but we'd still be stuck in the hospital/safe-zone.

A hospital might not be the safest place. In fact, any place that masses of people converge onto will become a target, strategically speaking (if I was an alien invader that's what I would do). It would be best to get out of the city, or at least as far away from the downtown area as possible, toward the outskirts.

Simultaneously the invasion could be happening in other cities around the country, and though we escape we come to another place only to find the same kind of destruction and chaos.

Also I've been thinking that we're going to need some kind of significant advantage in order to have a chance of making any kind of difference. Like, we're gonna need something that our country's military force don't have, and I'm thinking it should be some kind of alien weapon. Perhaps personal cloaking devices/force shields, or teleportation devices. It's gotta be good and it's gotta help us get past their defenses in ways that an ordinary soldier wouldn't be able to.

We could skip forward far enough that the invasion has already been established and is well under way, we've all recovered (mostly) and regrouped. Perhaps the situation is such that none of us were able to get home, so we're stranded somewhere together and need to come up with a plan for survival.

Idea for time-skip:We pile into the ambulance as the aliens start landing and shooting the place up. We drive to the hospital where we are safe because the military/police/SWAT/whatever has set up there. We stay for about a day or two to get in better condition. By then, whoever is fighting the aliens is losing and we have to get out of the hospital and run before the aliens overrun it.

I should try to stay up for 80 hours

You could try the Uberman Sleep Cycle, it's supposed to train your body to instantly go into REM during the brief times you sleep and give you very vivid, lucid dreams. I tried it once but my schedule didn't allow for me to continue, plus I started getting bored with so much extra time on my hands since I was only sleeping about an added total of 3 hours, I didn't know what to do with myself. I may try it again someday if I have the time.

A slight time-skip may be in order, that usually helps when you feel stuck. Helps you take a step back, analyze, and re-cap while introducing a new situation.
