Well you would normally have a pilot and co-pilot. One would most likely stay with the ship. But what i am thinking is that the sky ranger takes off after the squad gets off and then takes up an overwatch position to give CAS to those who need it. Could also have a sniper team inside them to provide sniper cover.
In theory we should be able to fit the sky ranger for CAS. Cause the fighters won't help much in a city. So yeh there you go we could put dual miniguns on it or you could have your co pilot man a 20mm cannon under the nose of the ship. We really do need something like a helicopter to rpovide us with CAS
Now Sky Ranger pilots would probably be more interesting, and you may even be able to go on the mission rather then sit on the ship. Depends on GM's preference.
Okay but if you think about it. Most people are gonna wanna play as squad members not pilots (In my opinion). You would not have a lot of interaction with the other rpers except for being at base. And if you were to get shot down you'd have a pistol, and wouldn't go into combat with the aliens. You are trained to use the pistol sure but not like the soldiers are. You are given a basic survival course in case you are shot down and you get a pistol, a few MRE's and some medical supplies. You would most likely hide and signl Command you were shot down, and a squad would be deployed to save you and mop up the aliens tha were tracking you.
You could probably have a pilot character, but as a mian that wouldn't be very fun....You would get little posts in compared to everyone else.
Anyways, I still think that all weapons have their uses. If people want 7.62mm rounds then let them take a gun that uses that. I am going to stick with my M4 thank you. And if a muton is charging thats why you got M203 and a guy with a M249 SAW. And if all else fails pull out a shotgun.
But see it is all in how you use it. An m9 in the right hands is fairly deadly. If you have the skill to use it then it won't matter the size of the bullet in most cases. And we will most likely be carrying our own sidearms from our own countries. So with that in mind we should be able to have a good amount of diversity, yet still be effective.
Well see though it is a trade off. Sure the AK is powerful, But you get more accuracy with like the M4. It may only take you 1 round with an AK to kill a guy, but if you are a trained operative or something then you can get those three rounds on center mass pretty quick. Doesn't matter how fanatical you are, you get three rounds in your chest and one to the head you are dead. I like Accuracy, power i could really give a shit. and most likely we will be engaging things in long or medium range in the beginning. Close range combat with a new type of species? That would be fairly deadly. This is of course my opinion. But you would want to learn their physiology first before you were going in close enough for an AK to definitely not miss it's target. And by the time we get to mutons we will probably have some sort of alien weaponry.
Well, in theory anyways, all guns that are modern would not be obsolete within 5 years. They would have newer versions so like the M16A2 (Standard issue for Marines) would most likely be a M16A4 or 5. Along with some newer guns sure, but it takes a while for a gun to be developed, tested, and then sent to combat before it becomes standard issue. Even then it takes years for it to be phased in and other guns phased out.

I agree with you that they would be considered old guns but their newer variants would still be in use. specially if they are proficient with that weapon.
Oh so if i am from America i can have him use an M16, and if he is from like Russian he will use an AK? cool I am in, i can give you a few characters.
