As the battle raged on, Meemoo, the unprogrammable yet indisputably sentient VCR set his plans into motion. So long had the world ignored VHS tapes that humanity had failed to unlock their true potential. "ARISE MY MINIONS!" he cried, front door flapping as the "12:00" on his face flashed a bright red. And with that utterance, characters began to crawl out of the film in every VHS tape on earth taking on their true sizes. And these beings were replicated to astronomical numbers; every frame of every film spewed a new minion unto the earth. "HAHA," Meemoo cackled. "It is only a matter of time before my army is ready to crush that pathetic godmodder.
A ragged looking man stood before Tomaru, his trembling hands feebly grasping a dagger caked with dried blood. For every step the kitsune took forward, the man staggered one step back. There was no way that he could beat The Red Shinigami in combat; his only hope was escape. He tossed the dagger at Tomaru as a distraction and then reached into is pocket for a bomb. But... what happened to his hand... where the hell did his hand go!?

The dagger hadn't even slowed Tomaru's advance; he simply tilted his head to avoid the blade and the flicked his wrist to swing his sword. He cut off the man's hand so swiftly that his blood didn't even have a chance to stain the pristine katana. "You should have gone quietly," Tomaru said as the man began to realize that he was now short one hand. "You do realize that you didn't actually kill that girl, right?" The man looked at Tomaru with wide eyes, fear in its purest form dulling the pain of his wound. "That's right, your aim was so bad that you missed all of her vitals. You could have made amends. But after that little stunt..." The last thing that the man saw was the cold, empty gaze of The Red Shinigami.

With a sigh, Tomaru sheathed his still pristine blade and turned his back to the headless man behind him. He had never bothered to learn the man's name, and he was glad that he didn't; it would be a shame if a kindhearted person stirred up unpleasant images by coincidentally sharing that monster's name. He was best left forgotten in the woods, though now that the confrontation was over, Tomaru did wish the man the best possible outcome in the afterlife. Perhaps his blade had at least spared him hell. Tomaru considered walking back to the village, but decided to move on without a word. He knew that he would be hailed as a hero, but he hated being praised for taking yet another life. If he was stronger he could have stopped the man before the stabbing happened and ended the affair without bloodshed, but even he wasn't omniscient.

Then, as he began to wander off down a wooded path, a strange being beckoned to him. A man named Skallagrim was inviting him to a tournament. Despite an utter lack of knowledge about what he was about to get into, he did understand the word "tournament." And apparently it was an invitation only one at that. A grin spread across his face as he uttered the word "Skallagrim" and stepped forth into the Great Hall. The place was certainly extravagant, with the host even having a bit of poetic verse for him. His tail began to swish with excitement as he received the host's greeting. His language was flowery but the meaning was clear: here, death was of no consequence; The Red Shinigami could come out to play...

But before that perhaps he should introduce himself to the other guests. Like that big spider... thing. He looked... nice. On second thought, perhaps the other guests could introduce themselves to him.
Wow Descartes, you must have had a lot of fun making that character. Every line of that profile is solid gold, especially the shoes.
Garoth listened to Scarlet's story, but it didn't really mean much to him. She kept going on about Megumi's "aura," but he really didn't see what the big deal is. "So what you're saying is she's got some serious power in her blood? I don't see why you're so nervous. If anything, it's good she's on our side. Best not to piss off the child of a god, right?" He hoped that Scarlet and the council would just ease up on Megumi already. He saw firsthand how she risked her life to protect others and knew that she wasn't the type to go on rampages. Sure she was a bit odd, but no more so than the rest of the people here.

"I am pleased to hear that you are willing to join us," Ayako said pleasantly as he lead her back into the room where he had branded her. "But before you join, there are a couple of things we must speak about. First, I want to tell you what I found out about your father, and then Councilman Malik would like to interview you." He took a seat and waited for Megumi to do the same before he continued. "I should not give you the truth you seek because it is classified information only accessible to masters, but because of your particular circumstance and in consideration of your cooperation I feel morally obligated to make an exception for you. What I tell you does not leave this room. You will not mention it to any other soul. If a council member asks, this conversation never happened; you may simply tell them that the information was classified and that I refused to disclose it." Once again, he waited for Megumi to give an indication that she understood the nature of this conversation before continuing.

"I believe that your pack were descendants of the wolf of the black moon, a powerful spirit that served as a guardian between the gates of heaven and hell. It makes sense to me why they refused the brand and why we hunted them down. Do you remember when I said that there was darkness in both the mortal and the spirit worlds? Long ago I came to this world fleeing from a being of immense power. If that being came to this world, it would be the end of days as we know them. In order to prevent this from happening, we created the brand and established The Guild. Our brands do a bit more than simply mark us. They are wards that prevent spirits from passing over to this world, and in turn they prevent the branded from returning to the spirit world. In short, the are our way of keeping the door between worlds shut. Now, your pack were gatekeepers. Do you see where the problem arises? They would no longer be able to perform their duties if they were branded, yet we could not make an exception for spirits with the ability to open a door between realms. I feel bad that I have been a part of a great deceit, but I do not regret it nor will I apologize for it. Believe me when I say the alternative is far worse. If there is anything you would like to say, do so now. This conversation ends today, and you will forever hold your peace." Ayako's voice was kind, yet firm as he spoke. It was clear that the old fox had made some difficult choices, but that they were the best choices he could have made, even given what he knew now.
Junkojuro was visibly pleased when Haruka offered to cook some tofu on a regular basis, so he wanted to make sure he earned such generous treatment. "Of course, Haruka-sama," he said, springing to his feet, eager to show her around the shrine. "It is not terribly large, so you need not worry about getting lost, but I will make sure that you know your way about nonetheless." He walked up to her with a bright smile on his face and took her arm in his, gently urging her forward. "Once you see the amenities, I am sure that you will no longer have any doubts about your ability to run the shrine." With that he lead her about the place, pointing out all of the rooms and their purposes.

The first room they entered was an open room with a large statue of an old man bearing rice standing prominently in the middle. "This room is where people, including yourself, may come to pray. The man with the bale of rice is Oinari-sama, a benevolent god associated with fertility. We kitsune are his followers and may deliver messages from and to him. If he is ever displeased, I will surely know and inform you. As for the others..." he waved his hand in a sweeping motion to a series of smaller statues, each representing a different deity. "Although this shrine is devoted to Oinari-sama, it is important not to neglect the other gods. While we serve Oinari-sama, it is neither harmful nor forbidden to keep the other gods in our favor." As he explained about the gods, he led Haruka in a circle about the room so that she could get a good look at all of the statues.

The next room was significantly smaller, though there was plenty to offer in terms of content. Hundreds of scrolls rested in tiny square cubbies that covered the walls. "I imagine you will be spending a great deal of time in this room. These scrolls contain all the information you will need to know about your duties, and much more. They contain prayers, rituals, histories, spells, and all kinds of information. I will be able to recommend particular scrolls to direct your studies, but you are free to read them as you like."

They went through a few more rooms, some containing tools of the trade, some sleeping quarters for guests or followers, and some just decorated living quarters. Finally, Junkojuro circled back to a room in the center of the shrine that featured a statue of a fox with a glowing glass ball in its mouth. "This room is of great importance," he said in a soft voice. "The sphere you see is my Hoshi no Tama, my very soul, and the object that allowed me to create this shrine. Without this ball, I am virtually powerless, indistinguishable from any other stray fox. If my Hoshi no Tama is ever removed from this shrine, all you just saw will be as it was before your prayer, and I will be as I was. But, I do not foresee this being a problem unless the gods themselves see fit to remove it." With that he lead them out of that room and back to where they began. "So, is everything to your liking?" He wanted nothing more than for his master to be comfortable here and was now ready to make any alterations that she wished for.
I think I'm the only guy that doesn't spit acid/venom. lol.
Garoth was surprised to hear that Ayako was already looking for Megumi. Was that just a coincidence, or was the fox just one step ahead of everybody. In any case, he didn't have time to dwell on the matter because Scarlet was coming over, and by the looks of things she had something figured out. "Does my favorite redhead have some news for me?" he retorted in a playful tone. He did resent being called a bird, but he couldn't think of an equivalent mildly demeaning word for mortal on the fly, so he just resorted to calling her by the color of her hair.

"Excusing yourself again?" Malik drawled once Ayako stood up after receiving a message. Malik was a pale, gaunt man that looked like a borderline undead, but his unadorned forehead revealed that he was human. He had dark rings under his eyes that matched his dark hair and robes, yet despite is sickly appearance, he spoke with a full, almost threatening voice.

"Yes," Ayako replied, ignoring the man's harsh tone. "It seems as though that wolf that I just branded has returned. She will be a valuable asset if she decides to join--"

"Before you let her join I want to speak with her," Malik interrupted, again in a blunt tone. "You have a habit of romanticizing our work. I want to make sure she'll be more than a waste of paperwork."

Ayako nodded, but remained silent. He had wanted to spare Megumi the experience of talking to Malik, but she would have met him eventually so perhaps sooner was better than later. With that, he made his way through the halls and eventually came upon the little gathering that Megumi was with. "Ah, Megumi, you returned quickly." He gave a pleasant smile to the others, but motioned for the wolf to come with him. "If you do not mind, let us talk in private. I found some information that you may like to know."
Name: Tomaru Shinimura, aka The Red Shinigami

Age: 25

Gender: Male

Race: Kitsune

Random Descriptors: Height: 5’9’’
Weight: 180lbs
Hair Color: Copper
Eye Color: Blue
Skin Color: Fair

Character Tier: Intermediate

Character Type: Critical Character- Tournament Participant

Physical Description: Tomaru has the lean yet well-muscled physique of a practiced martial artist. He has moderately pronounced facial features and a horizontal scar running across his chin. He does little to style his hair, keeping it short enough so that it stays out of his eyes and lets it fall straight back over his neck. As a kitsune, he has a pair of fox-like ears, a large and silky fox tail, claw-like nails, elongated canines, and a set of six whiskers on his face. He wears a snow-white kimono with crimson streaks running through it and a pair of deep red samurai pants. He is not one for footwear as he is well-traveled and the skin on his feet has toughened up to endure rough terrain, partly from his training, partly from all the walking he has done. His movements are all smooth and controlled, as if they were specifically trained, whether he is demonstrating his martial arts or simply passing the salt.

Personality Description: Tomaru is a wandering altruist. Despite his lethality, he is a kind and gentle man that loathes violence. He will entertain a pleasant conversation on just about any subject, and loves to teach people about his philosophy. With that said, he does not stand for any form of oppression and will take any measure to protect his friends. When facing one that has made himself an enemy, Tomaru seems to become a different person and is surprisingly merciless. It is his ruthlessness against the wicked that earned him the nickname Red Shinigami, not a name that he is proud of, but one that has circulated across the world.

Skills, Powers and Abilities: First and foremost, Tomaru is a master martial artist. He learned Ayako-ryu, a martial art and philosophy, from his master, the fox deity Ayako. The style focuses on efficiency of movement, fluency between forms, and effective killing. Ayako-ryu is a collection of many martial arts, including Karate, Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai, Akido, and Drunken Kung Fu. As a master of Ayako-ryu, Tomaru can fluently transition between a number of martial arts. In addition to unarmed combat, Tomaru has also mastered the use of the katana through his training. Ayako-ryu contains several stances that should be noted:

Tsubame: This stance combines offense and defense, implementing principles similar to Wing Chun. His hands are raised with his palms opened, his left hand extended further than his right. From this stance, he can block an attack and deliver a quick strike in a single fluid motion. This stance is only effective about the upper body and in close quarters.

Wani: This is a specialized stance designed for intercepting attacks with a piercing trajectory, such as spears, arrows, and straight kicks. He holds his left arm low with his hand tilted up and his right hand high with his hand tilted down, mimicking the jaws of a crocodile. He then snaps his wrists together to catch the intruding object. Unless the object has a slick surface, like greased metal, he will have a firm grip on it. This stance is only effective at defending the middle of the body and requires steady concentration.

Usagi: In this stance, Tomaru simply falls straight backwards, holding himself up with his tail. Through rigorous training, his tail has developed a strength and elasticity that allows him to quickly spring back with a counter strike. The nature of this stance also allows him to dodge high and upper-mid attacks, as well as attacks aimed at his legs.

Hebi: A standard iaijutsu stance with a twist. Tomaru can unleash his quickdraw strike from this stance at any moment, but if given time to aim, he has familiarized himself with the reflective properties of his blade to such an extent that he can unsheathe it slightly and bounce the light of the sun off of his blade, into his opponent’s eyes, and then strike at that moment of blindness. Naturally, this requires intense focus as well as a sunny day.

Tomaru is also ambidextrous and is capable of seamlessly switching between orthodox and south-paw stances for all of his styles. He has been known to do this to destroy his opponent’s rhythm or even dodge attacks without having to enter a defensive stance.

In addition to martial arts, Tomaru has also learned how to utilize Inner Strength, or as many martial artists call it, Ki. Tomaru has learned three Inner Strength techniques from Ayako:

Hasaiken: Tomaru can channel his Ki into a limb. When he strikes with that limb, the energy augments the attack with a concussive blast of kinetic energy. Such an attack is capable of breaking bones on an unarmored opponent, tearing through light armor, and damaging heavy armor. Hasaiken requires preparation, but not complete concentration.

Ikiteha: Tomaru focuses his Ki tightly into the form of a blade. He can release that energy into a narrow plane of kinetic energy that can slice through all but thesturdiest substances; reinforced titanium probably wouldn’t be affected. Ikiteha requires devoted concentration before it is executed.

Gekitaisuru: Tomaru uses his Ki to unleash a sphere of kinetic energy around his entire body. This attack is not very damaging – an enemy might be dazed after taking a direct hit at worst – but it has enough force to repel enemies or projectiles from all directions if Tomaru becomes overwhelmed. Like Ikiteha, Gekitaisuru requires devoted concentration before it is used, plus he cannot use his Ki for three turns thereafter.

Finally, as a kitsune, Tomaru has heightened senses and an affinity for fire:

Heightened Senses: Tomaru has heightened senses of hearing and smell, and can see a bit better in the dark than a human. Furthermore, his whiskers can detect fluctuations in the air, which makes it difficult to sneak up on him. While the whiskers cannot tell him specific trajectory information, they can tell him that something is moving in a general area.

Affinity for Fire: While not a manipulator, Tomaru is resistant to intense heat and fire. He can sustain direct contact with anything up to 1,200°C and can raise the temperature of all or a part of his body with sustained focus. He can combine this temperature raising ability with his martial arts to give his attacks a burning aftermath.

Character Equipment: The one item Tomaru carries is his katana, Junkojuro (Tier 5). Junkojuro is a steel blade that was blessed by Ayako; no man who is felled by this blade shall go to hell if there is goodness in his heart. Furthermore, the blade is more resilient than normal steel, having a keener blade, being able to withstand higher degrees of pressure and impact, and being highly resistant to various corrosive effects. Finally, the blessing prevents a flow of magic or energy downward past the hilt, preventing Tomaru from becoming a lightening rod.

Character History: Tomaru was born into a poor family. His father was a hunter and his mother ran a mediocre tea shop, and together they scraped by a living for him and his brother. However, one day a hunt went wrong and his father was killed by a rabid wolf. The remaining three family members worked together to run the shop and, tightening their belts, they managed to survive, but fate wasn’t done with them yet. One day Tomaru’s mother became ill, and while he and his brother were old enough to handle the shop, they simply couldn’t afford the medicine.

Rather than letting their mother die, Tomaru decided to pour all their money into medicine, and they would just have to… borrow… food from some of the more affluent vendors. Tomaru was not exactly the best thief, but the villagers knew the situation he was in and usually just turned a blind eye.

One day, though, an old man caught Tomaru in the act. The boy tried to dart away, but the man somehow kept appearing in front of him. Eventually, the old man introduced himself as Ayako, the fox deity, and took Tomaru on as a disciple. He provided the family with food, medicinal herbs, and taught Tomaru how to survive off the land. And, of course, he taught him how to kick ass.

His mother lived for many years thereafter, but eventually her illness took her. Tomaru decided to part ways with his brother and began journeying the world, doing whatever good he could. He agreed to join the Nexus of World’s tournament for a very simple reason: he loves martial arts. This tournament would grant him an opportunity to go all out against great fighters without any lethal consequences. The Red Shinigami could play to his heart’s content.
I haven't done this format before, but it looks good. It'll be fun giving this a try. I'll have a profile up shortly.
I would like to make a comment about powers and equipment. Everything that you put in this section should in some way relate to both the setting of the RP and the character's personal past. If the RP is taking place in a totalitarian regime, it might be kind of hard to justify that M-16 that you always carry on your back. You wanna be a martial arts master? Cool, where did you learn and how does that affect your style? If we are talking about what GMs want to see, then I think its safe to say that they want to see players embrace their world. Mold your character to fit the world. Try not to ask the GM to mold the world to fit your character.

Also, I have a general distaste for teleportation and auto-regen. Oddly, I don't see them used to make characters overpowered in combat as often as I see them as plot contrivances. The former is used far too frequently to immediately transport one character in a place to sulk while another character (or characters) is expected to seek the teleporter out and console him/her. The latter simply removes any sense of tension, drama, or potential character development that can result from an injury.
