It has been 18 months since the outbreak.

Permanent settlements have begun to crop up across many parts of the US, but they are few and far between, and discord is rife. It seems like every week there is a new rumour about somewhere safe, a place where there aren't any walkers, a place where society can start again... but rumours are all they are.

In the beginning, chaos and confusion reigned and information, or a lack of it, would get you killed. For anyone to have survived this long, they must have discovered a few simple truths: Everyone is infected, you turn when you die and the only way to stop it is to destroy the brain. The walkers hunger for the flesh of the living and their bites are highly infectious and can kill in hours unless treated quickly, usually with amputation.

This long after the fall of civilization, everyone has lost someone. A friend, a partner, a child... pain and suffering follow the survivors like a bad smell, but it is through this shared experience that many unlikely friendships have formed, alliances made and even romances blossomed. Even the end of the world, it seems, is not enough to completely crush the human spirit...

The last year had been difficult on Marcus. Emotionally and physically he had been drained by his task, a simple task but one which had led him to drive, walk, swim and climb his way across 12 states, fighting famine, disease and the walking dead, to find out what happened to his wife and daughter. The first six months had been easier, making his way from Tennessee back to Boston, believing that his wife would have kept their daughter safe inside their easily fortified home. It was only upon arriving back at his house to discover that his family had set off to New Orleans to search for him three months prior that he began to feel the strain of worry, every night wondering how they were faring on the road, fearing they could have been taken by walkers, or bandits, or worse...

Over that time, he had met several people he would consider to have been friends. First there was Carl, a trucker he met in Knoxville whose own family was in Boston. They helped each other survive the chaos of the first few weeks after the outbreak and went their separate ways on the outskirts of the city. It was Carl who had given Marcus the revolver he still carried and had insisted that he kept it when they parted ways. After Carl he met up with a large group led by a man named Raimes who insisted they travel to West Virginia because he firmly believed that they could carve out an existence in the thick forests there free from the menace of the walkers. Unfortunately, over the following months with little food and frequent attacks both from the dead and from bandits and scavengers, the numbers in the group dwindled and eventually the remnants split and went their separate ways.

Currently, Marcus was travelling with a man called David, who he had met on the road just outside the town of Meridian in Mississippi. Though David hadn't been incredibly forthcoming with details about his past thus far, they had at least managed polite conversation along the road and thus far neither one had managed to do anything to get the other killed, so as far as Marcus was concerned they were off to a good start. They were just coming into a town by the name of Slidell when Marcus decided to break a silence which felt like it had been going on for days.

"So.. uh.. phew, that weather's getting a bit warm, huh? Much hotter down here than up in Boston, I'll tell you that, and ano.." He began, but was abruptly silenced by David waving him down and pointing to something nearby.
Sorry guys. It's been a busy day. I'll start sorting out IC posts and deciding on cast now.

Ah, perhaps I should drop out of the RP since I'll be in a different time zone? :/

I'm sure that won't be necessary. Judging from what I've seen so far, posts have been coming up in this thread at all times of the day, so it doesn't really matter what time zone you're in. Also, I doubt this will be the sort of thread where the IC will move ahead three pages in the course of an evening, even at peak times, I don't know about anyone else but I don't like writing that fast.
It is almost Monday. But as I said, I've been working all weekend, so I'm going to be a mean old man and make you wait til the morning. Bwahahahahaa!

Pun intended?

Intended? No. But definitely welcome.

I'm excited, any idea when the IC post is going up?

I think Sarge said Monday?

I did indeed say Monday.

Is there a definite cast yet? Are we all "in"?

No. I'll let everybody know who made the cut on Monday when I put up the IC post. Unfortunately I've had 13 characters submitted for an RP that I was really hoping wouldn't go above 10 people to begin with. Annoyingly, so far there hasn't been a single character I'd have felt deserves to be cut, so it's going to be a tricky decision on Monday... or I could just avoid the decision entirely and accept everyone, but that might be considered biting off more than I can chew. We'll see.

I guess we should separate our characters into two or three small groups because we'll merge at one point into the large group that the plot follows. Kaden and Jack are already in a group. So do we make one or two more and just have people join? What do you think, Sarge?

I'm not personally going to sort people into groups. People can group up if they wish or be alone, it's entirely up to them and I'll let you sort out who you group with by yourselves. I will in fact volunteer my character up to anyone who thinks they would like to start with him in their group, or alternatively I'll begin solo.

I read someone asked if the apocalypse took place in the TV show universe or the comics universe yesterday, in the comic universe the Z word is commonly used. In the TV show it has strictly been written so it never appears. Apart from the Z word being used in the comic universe, there are very little differences as to the actual universal laws. Everyone is infected, bite kills you unless you can stop it spreading (like hacking of Hershel's leg), no known cure etc. :-)

I'll be straight up with you guys and admit that 90% of this RP will be based on the lore of the Telltale Games, which seems to be the same as the TV series as far as I can tell. Playing Season 2 of the game is what originally gave me the idea for this RP, so that's my base. So yes, bites kill you unless you are very lucky and take very drastic measures. You turn when you die regardless of how you died, unless your brainstem is destroyed/damaged, and there is no known cure for being all corpsified and gross.

And just to let everybody know, the current plan is that we will begin the RP with everyone either in or around the town of Slidell, just to the North-East of New Orleans across the lake, connected by a bridge (and presumably some sort of ferry service as an alternative). Then, SOMETHING will happen which will result in a herd of walkers passing through the town, forcing everyone to take cover. At this point, some people may choose to take cover in the same place, and glorious RP interaction will occur!
Thanks for the support. I'm sorry, I didn't check before we went with New Orleans to see if any of the other Walking Dead RPs were using it as a setting. I know there's one set in Los Angeles, but that one has it in the thread title. By the looks of it, however, ours is set about a year after yours, so there's that!
I agree, Note, and to be honest I haven't decided how I'm going to start things off yet. I don't like the idea of just starting off with everyone huddled in a room, having never met each other before, that was just something I put in my blurb at the top of the OOC because I couldn't think of anything better at the time. I was thinking, as you suggested, that before the group forms into one big whole we could meet up individually and merge into two or three smaller groups which eventually meet up. Depending on who ends up accepted to the RP, my character Marcus could easily bump into Twix, Lee or Leon wandering the streets, or strike up a conversation with Jack about the baseball cap he's wearing. It's all things to start thinking about.
I mean that events shall unfold which will lead to our characters bumping into each other in Slidell. For the most part, it seems like many of us are travelling alone at the moment and obviously the point of the RP is that it follows a group of survivors, not just a load of individuals doing their own thing.
