Acacia Hawthorne:"Aw, she's a sweetheart. I'd learn ice skating if it would help her out, ah well. She's a good kid."A great, big bundle of joy. That's something Jaycen can connect with, right off the bat. But, having such a darker side himself, he feels more than just a friendly connection. Regardless of whether he knows it or not, Jaycen usually forms a deeper bond with people who have relatively the same issues as he does. He's drawn to Acacia, out of need for true understanding for the problems he's been running away from. Aside from that, Jaycen doesn't much know about the Hawthorne girl's own needs and issues, just that there's a gut feeling that she has them—everyone does.
Though, Jaycen is always there to help her condition and further improve her game on the ice. Does it seem like she'd make a career out of it? Probably not, but it doesn't hurt to have an outlet like a sport to keep all the demons at bay. Like all the other athletically inclined students, he's there to improve and them better.
Jacob Rockwell:"Smart cookie. He's in that marine program; I'm certain I could get him into a sport or two, though.Like Acacia, Jaycen is drawn towards Jacob, without real understanding as to why. The boy is extraordinarily smart and is miles and leagues above him in those categories, but he enjoys seeing what else he can do, aside from that. Jay doesn't try to push Jacob past his limits, but he's often there keeping him at the top of his game and focused on something other than what his inner demons are attempting to force out of him. Jay knows exactly what that's like and, even though he's has no inkling of what anyone's problems are, knows that it's best to have both a sound mind and a sound body and that's exactly what he's attempting to do with Jacob.
Vladimir Kalkovich:"I don't understand how such a happy person could make such grungy, dark music. But, to each their own."How many troubled people are there attending Caelbury?
Jaycen doesn't have much in common with Vlad, so the connection there is essentially only the ones buried deep inside. So, Jay does his best to at least talk to the kid, but other than that, he's probably just seen as any other teacher in the school. At least he tries, though. He enjoys listening to him play music, even if it's not his favorite type. There's a lot of musical talent at Caelbury and he understands that sometimes it's better not to push all that athleticism crap onto people who really don't need it.
Rayne McCutcheon:"Aw, she doesn't do much in my class. Probably because she's never in it. She, uh, kinda needs this class before she graduates, though. I dunno. She does really good in her other classes; I wouldn't want to force her to stay another year just for P.E."There's not a lot Jaycen can say about Rayne; she's never attended his classes before. However, he does spot her occasionally and even, on occasion, asks her why she skips gym, fully expecting the answer she spouts out. Huh, she's a bit of an extreme kid, but Jay can handle that. What she wants out of life she can't get from doing some stupid sport or running around acting stupid and Jay understands that. She's brilliant, though, and he lets it slide... but only if she allows him to help her test the waters a bit. Someone with that much rebellious energy must have some pent up stress and anger inside and Jay makes it known that he wants nothing more than to help her out with that. If he can find her a sport that lets her release every bit of that anger and frustration, then she can skip Phys. Ed. entirely. Really, though, how many sports are there that can accomplish that? Not many, and so it's not that much of a hassle to show up like once a week or something.
James McNamara:"What a hot head. I've dealt with his kind before, all slick and cool and stuff. That's fun, but, I don't think charm can get you that far in life. I wonder if he can prove me wrong, though."Jay is pretty indifferent about James. The kid likes his music and sports aren't for everyone, though that's not to say he's bad at any. There were plenty of people on his team who used to act like that and many got their asses chewed out for such careless attitudes. But, if it works for James, then what right does he have to butt in and tell him otherwise? Other than that, they're on even ground and act, more or less, like regular students and teachers should to one another.
Julie Scott:"What a busy body. Shouldn't you slow down a bit?"The only gal he lets take a few breaks every now and then. He spotted her one time down at the locally owned coffee shop making some complicated espresso and studying at the same time. The poor girl got coffee all over her textbook. She overworks herself entirely too much, and Jaycen gives her time in P.E. to simple catch a few winks in the middle of the day. P.E. is exhausting enough when you're both working a job and studying twenty-four/seven and now she has a social life? What is this? He made that mistake during college, taking courses way above his own level of intelligence that literally sapped the energy out of him. He nearly got kicked off the football team for that and ultimately had to drop a few of those classes to be able to operate and function properly. It took a whole two months to readjust his sleep schedule.
Cole Grimoire:"Another ice skater. I don't think he appreciates flaunting his talent, though, which I can understand, but the kids really good."If anyone knows what athletic talents look like, it's Jaycen, even if he has absolutely no experience in the sport. That's what's special about him. He can't pick up skating, or hockey, or golf like he can football, but knows exactly what it takes to be pro in any kind of sport and he knows exactly what technical things one needs to focus on to achieve the apex of their game. Cole has that ability, but lacks the drive to truly seize it and Jay's there to pick up all the pieces he missed and fix it all up for him. Sure, he probably couldn't skate like he did, but that wouldn't stop him from actually being able to analyze and improve his routines. But, it's understandable that someone like Cole needs something to keep him going, some kind of incentive to grasp from becoming something worth noting. Jaycen's goal, for him, is to find that.
August Marco:"He pranked me a few times, but I got him back. Though, I, uh, I mistook pig's blood for maple syrup—don't ask how. I'm just glad this isn't a Stephen King novel."If anyone's a terrible pranker, it's probably Jaycen. Either he goes overboard and steps past the line, or it blows up in his face. However, he enjoys having fun and enjoys August's happy-go-lucky nature. He's energetic and never boring and Jaycen takes advantage of that in his class room, gladly running all that energy out of him and putting it to good use in his class and he doesn't really think August has any qualms with that. Jay does his best to keep on the kid's good side, just to avoid any of his nastier pranks, though he's gotten caught in just a few of the kid's traps. After the pig's blood incident, both have completely stopped targeting each other. But, they do spend a lot of time together, regardless, due to August's rather top notch swimming ability. Sure, there's already a coach for swimming, but Jay specializes in more than just coaching. He's there to condition, to judge, to analyze, and to improve in a more intimate, meaningful way. He doesn't give the kid a play and tell him to practice that. He watches their form, their technique, and their raw talent up close and makes them change, gives them points to focus on, tells them what's wrong and how to fix it, gives them suggestions, and then takes all that and does even more with it.
Max Wallenberg:"Quiet fellow and a bookworm, too. But, he does pretty swell in those giant rowboat things. Uh. I'll probably have to, though."If there's one thing he doesn't necessarily know about, it's probably rowing. He went to college for football and the college he went to wasn't that prestigious, so sports like rowing or polo weren't provided. Of course, that won't stop him from learning how Max can better improve himself. For now, though, Jay acts more as a guide for conditioning and keeping Max healthy and fit. Other than that, he doesn't really know the kid much, but would definitely like to. He seems a lot different from the kids who have been thrown riches and have been born eating from plates of silver and gold. Whether it's just a phase or he really doesn't care for fame and fortune is up to Jay to find out.
Wren Sinclair:"Catherine Sinclair? Like the actress? Ah, she's got the same dedication to staying healthy that I do. We get along great!"Aw, if there's a student he gets along with the most, it's probably Wren and it's not because she's a famous movie star, either. He doesn't care about that. She's kind and fun and just an all around great time. Though, of course, he's mostly oblivious as to why she would take a liking to him other than the fact that she was possibly a fan of his. That was stretching it a bit far, but he doesn't tend to bite a gift horse in the mouth. He does his best to help Wren keep fit and keep her image and her clean slate. If anything, Wren seems like the best little sister he could ask for, and he treats her that way, even if he does tend to wave off the age difference and talk and react to her on the same level. Sometimes, he forgets that he's a teacher now, though Wren probably doesn't find too much issue with that.
She doesn't have a particular sport that she's vying for, but it doesn't hurt to have something to focus on. Plus, he likes to challenge Wren to do better for herself and her image.
Eliza Herring:"I wonder... she looks like a tennis type gal. I like her, but she's not one to talk to me unless it pertains to class."Eliza kinda just breezes through all that general education stuff, so she didn't bat an eyelash at Jaycen. It wasn't a surprising, seeing how determined she really looked, that she simply passed something as menial as P.E. over, but Jay knows it's more than just that. Of course, he'd really never be able to discern the girl's intention, it wouldn't hurt to at least try and help her out a little more, right? Whatever those intention may be, she's still a kid in high school. If it's more complicated than that, though, Jay would most likely let her be as she wouldn't deem him at all useful.
Yuki Sakurai:"You know what I enjoy most? Getting gals and guys like Yuki to really suffer the bad end of Physical Education."Rayne and Julie are one thing, but Yuki is something entirely different. Rayne and Julie have viable excuses to skip out on the physical education part of glass; he gave Rayne an ultimatum and Julie already exhausts herself enough, so pushing her would practically end up in a murder case. Yuki, on the other hand, simply just thinks she's better than the rest of the kids. Oh, that sweet girl charm doesn't work on Jaycen: he's been scorned plenty by guys like her, ready to switch into bitch mode the minute you do something remotely to go against them. So, what does Jay do? He makes her sweat all that crappy make up off. He makes her hate him and when she tries to drive a knife into his back like he knows she will, he'll do what he always does. He'll brush it off and skip merrily along into life. Girls like that need to realize that high school isn't just a stage for you to run around ruining other people's lives 'cause you just have some issues yourself. Oh, she'd get along with half of the teammates he played with in the locker room. High school gossip and antics just don't compare to testosterone filled brutes in a locker room.
Barney Smith:"He tried to talk me into letting him sit the whole year out. I had him run the mile twice as much as the other students. Kid, you don't slack in Gym Class; I don't care if you have a silver tongue or not."If there's a student who attempts to convince Jaycen that they have some kind of issue or they require special treatment and it's not obvious something is wrong upfront, the only punishment—after thorough background checking—is running two miles, instead of one. Barney is among those students. He had a forged doctor's note and everything, but forgot to mention that there really wasn't a doctor of that name aside from a few on the other side of the country. That shit doesn't slide in Jay's class. And you wanna tell him what for? If they enjoy another mile, some push ups, a few crunches, and some push ups, then good for them... if they don't, well maybe you should have thought it through before attempting to tell off a P.E. teacher.
Jack Riley:"A football guy? A football guy?! Really?! Holy crap!"The kid likes football and plays it pretty damn well. What else is there to say? It really shouldn't be a surprise that he pretty much adores Jack Riley, though he, of course, doesn't set him above any of his other students. But, seriously, four years with this kid? What kind of luck is that? Of course, he can't help but think there's just a little something off about him. At the moment, though, Jay's a bit too blinded by his immediate attraction to him... in a good way. In a non-sexual way. That was fast. Don't want to prematurely lose your job just yet, eh? Hey, you gotta admire a guy who doesn't try hard to look good, right? That's probably the football talking. Did he mention Jack plays football?
Ingrid Rushwood:"She seems like a nice individual. Eh, I don't know her very well, though."Eh, she does what is required of her in his class. He can't force all of his students to like and interact with him, though, can he? Maybe he can. No, that's probably illegal or something. Yeah, no, Jay doesn't really know much about her and respects her distance and privacy.
Alice Profit:"The high kid? Why would you pop a joint during my class?Jay, of all people, has really no experience with drugs aside from the occasional acetaminophen or ibuprofen or maybe something stronger for the muscles he pulls or the injuries he used to get. He only caught her once and only because the marijuana was rather strong and had a very potent smell, but that was enough to keep his eyes on her like a hawk during his classes. She doesn't leave his general vicinity or do anything sneaky with her hands while he's around, nor does she come to class higher than a mother fucking kite without him noticing. A few of his teammates used to do cocaine and ecstasy, which isn't really a surprise when it comes to rising stars and giant celebrities, but he realizes exactly what a high person both looks like and acts like. Alice doesn't get away with much, though he never catches her selling drugs outside of his classroom (she would be stupid to in front of a damn teacher), so he doesn't do much aside from making her sweat profusely.
Brenden Aldrin:"Aw, hey, I love our new principal. What a fun guy. I wouldn't mind hangin' out with him often."Having only arrived at Caelbury, Jay doesn't have much of an opinion about Brenden, other than that he looks like a pretty chill fellow. There is, however, that thing about having been an all-star quarterback for the New Orleans Saints, that Jay almost always forgets about. It's probably the one reason they don't talk 'cause Brenden seems too star struck by that fact. He seems to forget that, having only three or so years of retirement from the NFL doesn't quite make him a normal person, yet. Though, he seems keen on slipping into that mold as soon as possible. Brenden probably won't stop reminding him of the fact, however.
Hayden Hawthorne:"I owe being here and a lot more to Mr. Hawthorne. He's a real nice guy and we actually go way back."Being of relatively the same age, Jay and Hayden have known each other for some time through different circumstances, most of which were brought on by Hayden's father. In fact, the two had a 'thing' way back when that slipped out of intimate and sexual and into more buddies and long-time pals. It seems awfully weird when either looks back on it, but they weren't necessarily compatible enough to have a long lasting relationship anyways. But, aside from Alli, Hayden is one of Jaycen's better friends who more or less pulled him out of a rather sticky situation. If he needs anyone to confide in or just be near, Hayden will be there.
Flynn Zimmerman:"I've seen him three times in the years I've been here and they've all been in meetings. Even then, it's really hard to notice him... he stares at me a lot, though. Kinda uncomfortable, but I dunno how to react to it."There's not a lot of interaction between Jaycen and Flynn; it's a really one-sided relationship. There's this inkling feeling that Flynn probably uses him as some weird test subject. Every time Jay's caught him staring, it's always felt like he's looking past the surface, accounting for every tick and movement and piling them into a database where he can further examine them for later. It's kind of creepy, to be honest and Jay doesn't know whether to ignore it and let him do his thing, or confront him about it. Of course, it doesn't anger and upset Jay, but it does seem a little unnerving.
Alli Kendrick:"Her and I? We're like two peas in a pod! I got her back and she's got mine."If there's anyone Jaycen is closest to, it's probably Alli. And it's not 'cause she calls him her Puppy Dog either, or that she thinks of him as a little brother despite the extremely large age gap between them. Alli reminds him, most of all, of what his little sister could have been (aside from the obvious drug and party issues in the past; he would have put an immediate stop to that). If not for the brunette hair on his head, they'd surely look related, though he teases her that he'll get his hair dyed blonde as soon as he gets the confidence. They're both balls of sunshine looking for fun and Jaycen tends to provide Alli an anchor for her problems and issues. He's there when she needs him and vice versa. If there's anyone that can succeed in turning Alli's frown around, it's her Jay Pup, her Little Bro, her Best Bud. Whenever she needs a night to just let it all out, he's there at her doorstep with two giant buckets of Ben and Jerry's and the latest romantic comedy.
"Crack open the giant spoon drawer, Alli Cat!" he'd shout down the hallway, "We're getting chocolate wasted!"
And, if there's anyone Jaycen has the best chance of ever spilling out his own pot of secrets, it's probably Alli. It's only been a year or two since they've really known each other and it's evident that Alli is one of the people he trusts the most. Of course, all of the buddy-buddy attitudes and peas in a pod deal tends to rub people the wrong way. Not like, 'Oh, that's gross,' but in a way that people misinterpret their relationship. They're best of buds, but people twist it up and see 'em more as best friends with benefits, or even a couple, if they're particularly daring. But, Alli knows just where her relationship veers off toward with Jaycen and Jaycen the same, and both are perfectly happy with how they're molding their friendship. Honestly, Jay could care less what people think when they see the two, as long as they both are on the same page, then no harm, no foul! It's probably that Cheerleader/Jock stigma that tends to follow high school around and most people, at first glance, see Jaycen as a bonehead and Alli as just a high school cheerleader playing teacher. People awfully close to both know both are relatively untrue and even further from the truth.
Adira Huston:"She's a stiff. Maybe she she should do some yoga."There's not really much to say about Jay and Adira's relationship. They're on good terms, but they don't see each other often, especially since it's really hard to fall asleep in gym class and not get noticed by the actual teacher. But, also, Jay seems to be able to take care of himself pretty well and doesn't necessarily require the teacher's assistance in reigning in his kids. Most students generally like Jay anyways and often respect him.
Damien Lilly:"He seems okay. A bit of a hazard, though."Jaycen is a very carefree man, in general, but he isn't, by any means, careless. That's how he sees Damien and he feels the guys is practically a walking time bomb. Of course, there's nothing wrong with that, unless it puts students in harm's way. He hasn't made any nasty mistakes yet, but chemical compounds are too unstable to be messing around with the way he does. It sure as hell is fun, but safety, in situations like that, really do come first.
Saul Kirschenzweig:"I help him a lot with his dieting, make sure he's eating the proper stuff for that heart condition. He's tried numerous times to get me to drink, though... I dunno, it's tempting."The guy dances and that's a rigorous training session in itself. Plus, he sings and acts as well. One needs to be incredibly fit to have been able to preform the roles Saul has and it shows in the way the man has taken care of himself. Jay was incredibly young when he hit his Broadway stardom, so he didn't necessarily understand how great the man used to be, but respects him for it regardless. If there's anyone that acts more like a father figure to Jay, it's probably Saul, despite the fact that the man tries his damn hardest to get him in a bar. Jay can't sing worth crap, but dancing is another matter, though he'd never be able to make a career out of it and Saul definitely makes him look like a train wreck, but it's something that requires extreme physical fitness, so it's technically his forte. That aside, he enjoys Saul's company, even if the man is a bit aggressive and abrasive, though Jay is probably among the few who has seen him in his relaxed state of mind.
Seth Kabhsenuf:"He seems like a bag of unfortunate mishaps, poor guy."Seth's idea of the world and the way he views things are generally how Jay does, however, Jay finds more success in the matter and probably because he's found his blissful ignorance. Of course, looking at Seth, the man probably wouldn't be able to function the way Jay does and that's alright. They don't know each other much or talk to each other much, but Jay's a very friendly and approachable person, so that is more than bound to change as the years come and go.
Celia Honey:"She left the year after I came here, so I got to know her a bit, but not too much."Before Celia's hiatus, Jay and her made it over the acquaintance bump in their relationship. However, he never knew much about her or got close enough to understand her reasons for leaving. Though, that is sure not to leave a dent in their already budding friendship. Jay likes Celia like he likes everyone else, though there's nothing much to say aside from the fact that they didn't really get to know each other well enough to warrant concern from Jay's side of things, or for Celia to expect it of him.
Jaycen Pierce:"Aw, he's adorable."Well, there's nothing really that hasn't been said about how Jay feels about himself. Sure, he's conflicted and he knows it somewhere deep down inside, but he's spent so many years inside of his own personal bubble that it's hard to come to terms with that. It's also difficult to come to terms with the bad things in the world and, where it's highly beneficial to look at things with a sense of hope and wonderment, it's also detrimental to run and hide from one's own problems. He looks at things with a glass half full, but when something threatens to turn that philosophy on its head, he's quick to fill the glass until it overflows and he can't realize what's what from what anymore.
Tori Hawthorne:"Who's that? What? How am I supposed to know? Yes, yes I do live under a rock."He really doesn't recognize many celebrities or heirs/heiresses. Jay's not a gossipy guy and doesn't read magazines or browse the internet trying to look up the latest scandal. It's hard to keep your private life private when you're famous, he knows that, but he doesn't really think it's right to go snooping around other people's things, trying to find dirt to throw on other people. It happened to him and it didn't feel good, but Jay knows that a lot of celebrities either bask in that glory and attention or really do hate it intensely. He happened to fall right in the middle and the scandal that happened to him really didn't affect him much, especially since the Vice Principal immediately came to him with a job offer afterwards.
Honestly, the only reason he knows a celebrity is if they starred in a movie he watched and he doesn't really watch many movies someone like Tori would be in, if she were an actress. Is she an actress? Wren was a special case 'cause she happened to star in a romantic comedy and he quite enjoyed her performance. However, someone like Tori, or the rest of the Hawthornes or Herrings or Sinclairs for that matter, really don't show up on his radar unless they're directly involved in his life. Wren, Acacia, and Hayden are the few that are and maybe Tori will be too, who knows? Jay really only knows that Hayden and Acacia have a shit ton of siblings and he leaves at that.
Liam Matthews:"New guy, eh? I used to be a new guy. Well, we all have. Uh. He seems really conflicted, like he's kinda throwing his own pity party most of the time. Sad guy."Uh, he just met him! But, from the way the guy carries himself, he obviously looks as if he doesn't really want to be any where near other people and would rather be wallowing off into his own corner to sulk. At least, that's the vibe he gave off to Jay. Jay isn't the most perceptive of beings, but he can't deny something that slaps him in the face.
