The OOC is up ladies and gentlemen so head on over

I'm going to be going to work in 15 minutes so if anyone has any questions regarding the RP it may not be until my break or even when I get off work for me to answer them but I will try to get to them all today.

Is a strugging British artist come to New York to find a muse too much of a cliche? ;D

It's fine, if they were going to Paris it would be more cliche.

I'm interested. I have a role that I'm interested in. Will a disgruntled East German that moved to the US fit?

Yeah, that should be fine.

The East Village of New York was a place where artists of all genders, races, and sexualities could gather and live to make art together or alone. Painters, musicians, writers, filmmakers, photographers, and many more could work in a place with low rent and on the cheap. However, in recent years there have been more developments causing rent to go up. Many artists have had to leave to Brooklyn or the Bronx because of the threat of gentrification. Those still living there may not have much more time left.

The Location

The East Village is located in Manhattan and was pretty much the birthplace of Bohemia. In the early 1900s many people seen to be “strange” lived there because rent was low and it allowed them to make a living doing things that could usually not sustain a person. Later it became a large part of the 1960s folk music scene, with artists like Bob Dylan and Dave Van Ronk coming from this area. As the years went on it was still very much known for it's artistic folk and cultural development, but it was beginning to become a much wealthier area. This roleplay is set in the mid 1990s (94-96ish) which is before the gentrification that it is known for now but the threat of it is very looming.

Also, it must be noted that the East Village is very well known for it's Queer scene, with lots of gay bars and such, it was also the location of the Stonewall Riots.

Rules

No Fantasy Stuff: Sorry if you were looking for something more fantastical but I'm hoping for this one to be grounded in reality. This also includes “Mary Sues”, if you have a character with absolutely no flaws and it absolutely amazing at everything, then you're not going to get in

Swearing: I'm usually more relaxed on swearing because I realize that there are people that will curse in every sentence. As long as it doesn't seem unrealistic than I'm fine with it.

No Explicit Content: I shouldn't need to explain this, romance is totally fine and even encouraged as it can help get things going, but please don't go beyond making out, just take that to PM.

Don't Roleplay for Other Characters: Unless explicitly stated by the player who's character you are using that it is okay, don't just take over other characters. Again, this should be obvious.

Character Limit: I'm not going to put a limit on how many characters one individual can play, however I only want you to play what you're comfortable with. If your don't think you can handle more than one character do not play more than one character.

Quick Side Notes

Many people may want to have roommates to help with the cost of rent and such so if that is wanted just discuss it in the OOC. This is also applicable to relationships, if you see someone's character in the OOC that you think might want to have some kind of relationship (Whether it be friendly or romantic) with your own before the RP is started, just work that out beforehand.

Into it, but would this take place as if humans still started on earth, or is this the "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far, away..." Type deal? And would this be more space fantasy or cyberpunk-esque? I figure if it was based on Firefly it would have a dash of space fantasy but mostly be sort of cyberpunk.

(Also, before anyone asks, yes, of course I was inspired by Rent to make this

The Plot

The plot for this RP is not very existent, I was thinking of it being more meandering focusing more on characters and character relations than some arbitrary macguffin that needs to be found or solved. If people want though I could maybe add a plot about a land owner buying up a historic landmark to put up condos. But I just think it would be better if we could just have our own characters interact with each other and then we could have our own tiny plots as it goes along.

Just wanted to know if anyone would be interested in this, I know most people around here like to have more structure for a roleplay but I'm hoping this can be given a chance.
Nicky stepped up to the mic and began to address the crowd. There were quite a bit more people than she expected to be standing in front of her that night but she was ready for it and raring to go. She was never someone who would get stage fright, in fact she thrived on the excitement of the crowd and she always wanted them to be loud and entertained. "Alright, thank you all for coming out." She said with a big grin on her face. "We are Out of Thin Air and we hope you came here with high expectations because we're about to blow your goddamn mind." Never did anyone say Nicky was the most modest person in any situation. She nodded to the band in order to tell them to start with the first song before starting to sing.

Her vocals weren't the greatest in the world but she injected a lot of emotion into her singing. To be fair her two earlier works were a queercore punk band and a crust punk outfit that lasted two weeks so this was easily the most vocally demanding project she had ever been in, but she could hold her own and could carry a tune pretty damn well.
Apologies for having not posted yet, I've been stranded with no interent but I swear it will come in the next couple days.
This sounds quite interesting.

I've been getting into a lot of musical's recently and Rent was one I've been wanting to see for years so I finally caved and saw a filmed version (Not the 2005 Chris Columbus film version, but a film of the stage performance) and this was a song that particularly stood out other than the obvious ones (La Vie Boheme and Seasons of Love). I really liked it, the performance and this song as well and I think it will be something to revisit again and again.
Sorry for taking so long to post that, I was in NYC all last week and I had been busy this weekend so I hope that post was good.
Nicky took a breath to calm herself, not wanting to get worked up too much before the show. She smiled at Ana who seemed to be cheering her on. She enjoyed Ana's company a lot and really liked talking and hanging out with her. Sure there were probably some bad choices that Nicky helped Ana take but she did care for her very deeply. She loved this whole group a lot actually, most people she felt pretty neutral towards at the best of times, but this group was something that felt special to her. They'd come a long way from shittily playing open mic nights and were finally on there way to maybe, possibly doing something big. Though Nicky would never admit it out loud, this prospect made her very excited.

She heard the conversation about improvisation and decided to add her two cents in. "I feel improv can be alright if we don't overdo it. Like people come here to watch us play, not perform a free-form jazz odyssey. As long as we get in what people want to hear, experimentation is fine." She said as she recalled a scene from one of her favourite movies, This Is Spinal Tap. She had always been less for experimentation in a live setting, though she didn't want to bring anyone down. In the studio setting she thought it was fine, if someone wanted to do a song with a ton of distortion and barely audible vocals over walls of noise she would be all for it, but she felt if someone was going to see them live the band should give them what they want without stalling. Sure they could be strange by adding in songs from old albums but change too much and the audience may not warm up to it.
