Kat
6.20 PM Outside the Spit

I've been contacting and coordinating the assault during the flight over, calling in favors with the police to set up a surreptitious guard around the entire city block, all of them able to prevent people from escaping on foot. Unfortunately, this isn't my district, and the police don't like me anyways, so they're loathe to do much to help me. All I've gotten is to have the airspace cleared of all hovercars. I had requested at least 10 riot police, but they laughed at me, and said I was being ridiculous for wanting to take that many people with me on a single raid. I had been shooting a little high, but I could work with what they gave me. Two police to go in with me, both of them rookies. They'd be little more than useless in a firefight, so I'm going to have to be a bit more strategic about this than I would like. Mawali shouldn't be expecting this, but you don't become one of the largest drug lords in Beta district without being paranoid. He'll have a contingent of bodyguards with him, all of them watching the cage matches.
As my quad descends, I hop out early, booted feet hitting the ground.
I see the lone police vehicle idling across the street, with the pedestrians clearing a wide circle around them. People don't trust the police much in places like this.
Sighing, I cross the street to where the two rookies are. They don't see me coming, and are focused on playing a card game on the dashboard.
Knocking on the window, the two rookies jump in their seats and scramble out of the car, awkwardly straightening up in the street while I wait patently, a pained smile etched onto my face.
Both of them are young, with patchy facial hair and their hair shaved to exactly the length protocol recommends. I'm guessing they grew up here in one of the nicer habitation stacks, and were taught to believe that the police were the biggest, scariest gang in New Ancora. I like to think that's true sometimes.
"Uuh, I, hullo officer Wythburn?"
"At ease, boys, I'm not going to bite your head off."
"Uh, I know you asked for the riot police, but see, they're all busy wi-"
"I know the excuses they gave me. Still, whether or not they forced you to come with me tonight, or you volunteered, I appreciate that you'll be working with me tonight."
They glance at one another, the taller one scratching nervously at his curly blonde goatee, while the shorter one just looks down at his shoes.
"Listen, boys. I know the types of sims you're familiar with,"
The short one pales when he hears what I say, and is about to stammer something, and then realizes that I'm talking about training sims.
"And I can tell you that this will be nothing like that. All I need you to do for right now is to wait in the car, keep your transponder on, and be ready if I call for you. I'll be calling for you either for backup in a firefight,"
The taller one seems excited with this possibility.
"Or it'll be because I need you to take the prisoners away."
He deflates softly.
I nod briefly,
"Alright, gentlemen. Wish me luck."
I step away from the car, and walk across the deserted street to the Spit. My hands are shaking, and I shove them into my jacket pockets. I've been in a lot worse situations than this, but my body treats them all the same.
Making sure that my pocked white armor is hidden underneath my coat, I step into the pulsating bar, head low and eyes up, scanning for my target.
Leytan
The moment Ephraim began to speak again, I braced myself for conflict. When he drew the blade, my hand was hidden, clutching a leather bola to fling at him if he lunged forwards. I almost sort of relished the opportunity, these were all men of action here, and trying to speak to men of action with niceties isn't how it is done, at least, that's not how it is done well.
Yet Nasharia spoke, I felt the room calm. She was clearly the one meant to lead us, the only woman in a room full of boys.
Knowing how I am unliked by the coarser members of the council, when I speak again, it is carefully,
"Master Calfrace.. I am aware that you are an imminent undertaker here, so perhaps you could announce for us the plausible cause of death to claim is what happened. Your words will lend not only the authority vested in you as a Guardian, but also you would be acknowledged as an authority in these dealings."
I don't know where Calfrace stands with me- he has been one of those who didn't come out of that place whole.. The opposite of me, in fact, but I'm aware that enlightenment graces only a few. So coming to him for advice, and acknowledging his superiority in this instance, should either make him hate me less, or he'll think more warmly of me. Either outcome is a win, I suppose.
It is at this time that my student returns, his breathe slightly short as he clutches the slip of parchment to his chest.
Handing it to me, I casually unfurl it, scanning the inventory like list. Rolling it up, I hand it back to him.
"Guardians, I am able to offer the services of 80 of my students, these are my final year students or recent graduates, and are the ones currently unemployed, or would be willing to leave their current occupation and instead help the city."
I can actually call for about 200 students fitting this description, but I decide that if I only offer 80, they'll either accept, and I've made them underestimate me, or they ask for more, in which case I can 'scrounge around' for students willing to help their old Master.
Is the cage fighting legal? Kat may see how Deon beat the living shit out of some poor NPC, and decide to ring him up with assault and battery.
(I'm cackling at the thought of arresting the GM's own character.)
Actually, I don't think I'm gonna be part of this one. Best of luck to ya!

Breaking my heart, here. You're always welcome to join.

Also:
Give me time to make the manifest for the Expedition, make a CS sheet, and then I think I can start the game. (I also need to include religion in the codex, and make a Beyond the World codex. It won't have anything though.)
Are we ready kids?
Shit is about to go from real to really bawler.

And don't worry, I'm no goddmodding scum, I leave my posts relating to other characters open ended, so that way people can react.
Kat is prepped to launch a siege on the Spit, so if you want to get your character in there, let me know so I'll wait.
EDIT:
I've now decided that my goal in this game is to hold a raid on every named location in this city.
Firo, re-sent the CS.
Got a few questions for clarification. Are there slaves? Is there a conquored race? What's the skin color of ppl, and does it change based on the regions?

Northerners are Inuits. Southerners are Mexican or white. East-Heartland-West are Anglo-Americans. There are no slaves, just servants, and Hands in the South. The only race who got conquered would be the Wyrmlings, and they work for Dragons. Wyrmlings are white too.

Are there trains or other advanced vehicles? It seems the tree sap could be used to generate steam power.

They definitely could be used to generate steam power. And while there is probably the design somewhere in the Imperial Boffin Corps HQ (I need to update the codex for these guys) it hasn't happened yet. Beyond the World, of course, it's fair game.

Also, I like the way mages are used here. Very nice use of magic.

Thanks! I spent a really long time figuring out how to have magic be present, yet not dominate the World.

[hider=Some points]*Is it actually rifled? As in does the inside of the barrel contain helical grooves which impart spin to a projectile around its long axis? Spin that serves to gyroscopically stabilize the projectile, improving its aerodynamic stability and accuracy?

Yus. yus it is.

*You note that the springs they're using are superior to what we have today--that's all well and good but you still have them wound by cranks.

They also have superior crank technology They're designed so that the user doesn't have to bring a lot of force into it's use, but yeah, it's a definite drawback. You have to have some guns of your own to be able to use the rifle.

**The above makes the Aladeous more of a primitive grenade launcher than analogue to conventional firearms

Note I did say experimental weapon. The Aladeous is the most promising weapon design the Emperor had at the time, so he gave it to the Expedition. As the Imperial Boffin corps (ooh, new group name) continues to tinker with how to kill people, they'll figure it out.

-Why hasn't anyone thought of using fire crystal to explosively propel regular bullets--it would be more effective. The design would even be similar to what we use now.

Mainly because large firecrystal production is still in it's infancy. These people are figuring out how best to use this stuff. (I considered doing it this way, but this way it gives me more room to grow the tech further along.)
-A sling or staff sling could likely toss these 'ball grenades' further and more accurately than a turn-spring mechanism.

This is going into the codex: they have these, but the Emperor in his technophile glory decided that he wanted to use the Aladeous instead. They will be going with you on the expedition. They're mostly used for blowing the shit out of fortresses and stuff, they hold much more volatile firecrystals.

Carrying around a quiver/quarrel of contact explosives just seems nuts when everyone is shooting at you with the same sort of ammunition.

They're not. Well, not originally. The Empire mainly came into being because his troops would shoot someone, and that person would explode, and when they shot back, the Emperor's soldiers didn't explode. That's cause firecrystals weren't really that widespread, and outside of a few essays talking about it's potential, most people didn't use firecrystals for anything other than starting a fire. The Emperor took over because he used exploding bolts when his enemy's didn't. During the Southern Rebellion, there were ludicrous gibs to be sure. Most people can't get firecrytals that volatile, so it's not an issue. The Southerners, however, who do have access to highly volatile firecrystals... Don't really seem to care that much about the potential of being exploded by being hit first. Their goal is to shoot the other guy before he can even draw his crossbow.
Reading books is so valuable to roleplaying well. Since forum sites are meant to have more longform posts, (at least, the good advanced roleplays do) it's important to be able to write well. And you only learn how to write by reading. A lot of my own writing has been influenced by what I read, I try to use the words that I find in Jack Vances writing, and when I'm playing a Cyberpunk RP, I'm going to be thinking more about what I read in Altered Carbon, Neuromancer, and Snow Crash.
Reading and roleplaying are both equally important, roleplay is a more freeform and social form of storytelling, while a book is basically a single person roleplaying by themselves... Which is a little weird, but that's okay, since what they write down is really neat, and the characters all interact really well, and rarely do they go off the tracks.
And roleplaying is like writing a book, a really gonzo, sorta batshit book where plot coherency often gives way to rule of cool, characters go off on tangents that are pointless to the main storyline, and oftentimes there isn't a main storyline worth following!

TL;DR:
Dont be silly. Both are forms of storytelling, and if you want to have an appreciation of one, it's advised that you have a basic understanding of the other. Those who have an appreciation of both, however, are doubly blessed, since they get to enjoy two amazing forms of storytelling.
