My vote goes for the more neutral ground; have a general guideline, but no real defining factors until our individual input is there.

We should know what the kingdom is like, what the continent is called, and other general knowledge about the surrounding environment. And then we go wild once we start playing.
Also: How long will the turns be? Game and reality-wise? What if a member wanted their turn to last 5 years game-time? Or if they only wanted to control the length of a conversation?

Probably not what Phoenix meant, but it could be fun if we played a 'Joe Mcaverage' who gets teleported into the fantasy kingdom, and pulls the plot coupon out of his ass the stone, making him king-for-life.
That way, we could justify why we're explaining things we should already know. As well as why our character might go batshit.

So how advanced is the tech?
We've got A.Is, cyronic stasis, massive spaceships, and wikipedia on steroids. What gear would a medic have? What would the redshirts the security team brandish at the space aliens? Why is there only one science officer? What is different about a medical officer and a medic? What is the purpose of a captain if we have friend computer doing all the work? Or an XO? What does the XO even do? Would our characters come from earth? Why was earth destroyed? What was the recruitment process?
