Sorry, I have a large vocabulary, and tend to use long words sometimes. I'm part Brittish, it's in my blood. Basically, abstinence means you aren't doing anything. I'm holding a tally, go out or stay in. The more people try and convince the group of a certain path, the more likely they are to do that. Also, alternate methods may be taken, such as ignoring everyone else and rushing out alone, but these are with their own risks.

You chose not to get involved with the discussion. While you personally will not do anything, if one person goes out the risk applies to everyone. You've made no move to motivate the others to take either path, which means you're not affecting the outcome of this particular junction in the story.

There's people being killed outside. You can go out and save them, or stay inside and hope they go away. This choice will affect the rest of the story from now on, which means it's important. Your character isn't taking any action towards either goal, so that's abstinence.

High ground grants you a +2 to attack opponents with polearms in Runequest. In Fate, it's an invokable aspect, which grants a +3 bonus to any appropriate action when you spend a Fate Point. In SW, it's considered a negligible combat factor, and not given any attention, as well as in 4e D&D. Sorry, I win the tabletop round here.

Mutants

Saphire sat down in her appointed quarters. She'd been here for ten years now. Like she'd expected, it was just another cage, if a more gilded one. People like her couldn't be allowed to walk free. She could feel it emanating from them all. Fear. Suspicion. Even hate. Nobody liked mutants, nobody wanted them, and anyone that believed anything else was a fool. She'd made them like her as much as she could, but she held no delusions. Even her powers couldn't change basic human nature, not without breaking people's minds. The doctors had been nice, and she'd cooperated with all their experiments. However, she'd downplayed her powers. She'd pretend to be woozy and tired when she wasn't even near her limit, and hid her abilities as much as possible. If her powers were what got her here, having more powers would be a bad thing.
Reaching out, she called out softly with her mind. Wiper, a large spider, crawled out from a small crack in the floor, crawling up her clothes and into her palm. Wiper liked her, that much she knew. It was a forged friendship, Wiper was her slave, but it made Saphire unreasonably happy. In her mind, she believed the spider to be her loyal companion, instead of a slave to her every thought, and they would surely make it through this together. Surely.
Smiling, Saphire reached out, as more and more spiders crawled from all over her room. Cockroaches, flies, bees, ants, mosquitos, they all came to her, covering her. She smiled, as they swarmed through her room, all in her mind, a single entity, with so many parts. Then, as easily as she had called the small army of insects, she sent them away, off to do their separate duties, watching the area, spread everywhere, extending her power. She had recruited birds, too, when she managed to get close enough. It made her feel strong, spreading her mind all over the complex. This was HER terrain. Even if it was a cage, it was hers, and she would not let anyone ruin it for her. She would rather die than submit to that nightmare again.

Super Heroes/Villians

Captain Awesome fired the beam of lightning, which wrapped around the girl's body. Unlike with most of his attacks, he fired a continuous stream, the lightning causing the water to rapidly evaporate as thunder rolled against the side of the buildings, a massive wave of wind following. After but a second he stopped, catching the severely diminished Liz in a metal bucket, moved with electromagnetism. "Well, you'd better hope you can replenish. Otherwise, you're going to be very small for the rest of your life." Captain Awesome smiled, as he sealed the bucket with lightning, lassing it shut to be completely waterproof. He then zapped off to his other prisoners, only to find that they had already been carted off by the police.
