Allow me to explain to you about the speed of light.
When the velocity of an object increases, so does the mass. As the mass increases, the energy required to propel the object also increases. As one approaches the speed of light, this barrier moves up rapidly. Once one reaches the point of light, your mass goes into infinity, which would mean you would need an infinite amount of energy to be propelled at such a speed.
Not only is it impossible, but if it were achieved by some means, even for a moment, the world would end. The higher the mass of an object, the greater the gravity, and thus Sonic would exert an infinite amount of gravity on the universe, which would instantly be turned into an infinitely small layer of matter on his skin. Or it would be, if it weren't for the fact that an increased gravity warps the flow of time, and infinite gravity would stop time. As such, the entire universe and everything in it would instantly be frozen in time, including everything that would alter appear in this universe.
