Chloe smiled when Joan thanked her again. It had been a while since she had helped anyone out and it felt good to be thanked, though she still wished she had acted quicker. After watching the girl leave to walk into the washroom, she let out a sigh and leaned her head back to look up at the ceiling. Whether she had gone with them or not, she would have run into the military. She wasn’t sure how she would have faired alone. Sure she could have probably outrun them and gotten away a lot easier but she would have been alone.

Her head jolted back down when she heard Joan calling for them. She looked over at Josef and followed after him into the bathroom. Her eyes widened, “What are the chances…” She mumbled to herself walking to the edge of the tub and staring into it. Anything they could have possibly wanted was right there for the taking. It was almost too good to be true. “I…I can’t believe it… How did I never hear something like this…” She spoke to herself softly. She reached her hand in and picked out a handgun, “They’re all loaded too…”

She stopped as the two started fighting again and she let out a sigh, picking out and shotgun and holstering it on her back. It really wasn’t her place to step into this fight but in a way they were both right. With that done she walked out of the crowded bathroom and started stretching once again. She wasn’t sure how long the trip was going to be, no matter who won and she wanted to be ready. However the more they fought, the more uncomfortable she became. In this state it was hard for her to stretch and finally she gave up.

“If I may get a word in…” She said very calmly, “This man said he was a doctor, correct? If so then I believe it would be best if we went and got him. Even if it’s just a bruise he may be able to do something to help Joan’s leg and he’ll be useful in the long run as well.” She nodded to herself, “If it turns out to be a trap then, like any other situation our only choice will be to defend ourselves and do whatever’s necessary to get out of there alive.” She nodded to herself, the man probably wouldn’t like it, but it was her opinion.

She looked down at the guns, “As for those, no matter what we decide on the subject of where we’re going, if we ever plan on coming back for the guns then we should hide them between the mattresses I think. I’m not sure how much the owner of these guns will like it though.” Finally she turned her back on them and shrugged, “It’s up to you two, I just wanted to state my opinion. Also, it may be in our best interest to get this done before those soldiers come back.”
While the man attempted to clean the wound on Joan’s leg, Chloe leaned her back against the wall and closed her eyes, breathing deeply. She had to make sure that she kept calm or she wasn’t sure what she would do. With enough quiet, she finally let her mind drift off to a more peaceful place and she kept there for a while. Many panicked thoughts and questions came up but she did her best to push them all aside while she was trying to relax. The thought of sleep came up but she knew that she couldn’t, they still weren’t safe.

She wasn’t sure how long she had been in her peaceful place but when she heard the yelling from outside she was brought out of it and she stood up, axe at the ready. It seemed that Josef had thought the same as he headed towards the door. She wasn’t sure what he was expecting to do in that location. Perhaps beat them over the heads as soon as they got in? Chloe glanced over at Joan who was still on the bed in pain. What if the girl was bitten; NO! She couldn’t jump to any conclusions.

As they began to get closer a sickening feeling entered her stomach but she kept at the ready. Finally the man began to relax his bat and Chloe did the same. It seemed as though the men had run off to deal with a bigger problem than a few civilians trying to survive. Joan was now sitting up and once the blood was cleaned off, it seemed as though there was no bite to be found. She let out a sigh of relief and sat down on the ground once more, leaning her head against the wall.

“I’m fine.” She managed to say, “Just a little spooked but I think we all are.” She closed her eyes once again, thankful that the girl hadn’t been bitten. If she had she would have felt responsible, for not being able to react quick enough. She opened her eyes and looked up at the two of them lying on the bed, “Since I’ll be sticking with you guys I might as well introduce myself. I’m Chloe.” She smiled a bit before shaking her head. It felt nice and normal to introduce herself.
The man didn’t need to tell her twice and as soon as he started running, she took off following behind him. She wasn’t sure how fast they were going, not that it mattered, and they needed to get away. Quickly she slipped into the first motel room. She turned around to see how the other two were doing and gasped slightly. The soldiers were holding things that kind of looked like medieval weaponry to her. On any other day, it probably would have been funny but right now was one of her worst times to laugh.

As they reached the second door she gasped as she was pulled in. Well at the very least he hadn’t slammed it in her face and left her to die. She stopped for a moment to catch her breath but it was quick as the doorknob started to shake, like some kind of horror movie monster was after them. She bit down hard on her lip to keep herself from letting out a shriek as they began to bust down the door. They were just as bad as the things that they had called the bitters, if not worse. She kept her axe gripped in her hand, unsure what to do with it and looking at the man for some sort of guidance.

She noticed him look at her before looking at the door. She wasn’t sure what he was thinking, whatever it was it was probably better than the situation they were in. Chloe quickly followed after the man, through the back door and into the motel room before he had shut the door. “Joan, try and stay calm okay?” She said, hurrying to the bathroom. There were towels, soap, shampoo and a wet napkin at least from what she could see initially.

Quickly she brought the things out and dumped them onto the floor next to the bed. When she had done that she let herself sit on the ground. She had to calm herself down, even if it was just for a few moments.
Chloe bit her lip softly at his response before nodding and peeking around the car before she made her move. For the most part Chloe kept close to the ground but when they had to run for to next piece of cover she booked it. It seemed as though she had been lucky earlier to make it to town without being spotted by the military. They were everywhere by the looks of it, patrolling up and down the street, trying to make sure that nothing slipped by them, and she wasn’t sure if it was luck of skill, but somehow they had been able to make their way past each one.

The motel parking lot only had a few car left and most of them looked battered, and although it appeared as though people had also salvaged what they could from them, they weren’t completely devoid of parts. In front of the drive in to the parking lot was a small building that used to house the reception desk. All the doors were painted red against a beige wall almost as if they were all coated in blood. Here and there were blood splatters from the people who had been killed there. If they were lucky, there would be things that people hadn’t taken in there, maybe even survivors but the think in their way at the moment, was the military

Chloe nearly jumped out of her skin when she heard Joan yell and she spun around quickly to see what was going on. The sight almost made her want to vomit but she kept her composure and swung her axe down on the arm that was holding Joan. Although decayed it’s arm still held tight so she brought it down once more. “We need to go now.” She said, kicking at the thing to try and keep it away, at least for long enough for Joan to get away.
For most of their personal talk, Chloe had no idea what they were talking about but still she felt inclined to listen, even as they began to bicker. A small smile crossed her face and she chuckled softly. It somehow reminded her of better times. Even though they fought she could tell that they cared about each other and that was relieving after these past few days. He stomach rumbled softly and she sighed, taking one of the bars in her pocket and biting into it. If they were going to do any of this she would need some energy; adrenaline could only get her so far.

She was in the middle of eating when the man spoke to her and she stared at him like a deer in headlights for a moment before she quickly finished eating. She felt like a pig and her face felt hot. “I..I’ll do what I can.” She said, stuffing the wrapper in her pocket. When the question finally registered in her brain she shook her head. “I just rolled into town a few days ago.” She responded, “The best I can offer you is the motel I was staying at. Other than the military rolling through and those things knocking on doors there hasn’t been a lot of activity.”

She began walking out of the store, when something hit her. “Wait. I did pass a weapon shop on the way here… not sure how ‘untouched’ it is though… I was just looking for food.” As they got to an intersection she pointed in the direction that she had come. “I came from that way.” She was silent for a moment and didn’t move, only thinking. “Are you sure we want to get guns? I’ve noticed those things move when they hear something like that…”
I'm sorry to hear that
Chloe froze when he suggested that she join them, though his offer came off as more of a threat. Even after he left to go check on his companion she stood there, mostly pondering over what to do. He had given her the chance to leave right now, go back to her motel, and hide out until…. Well she wasn’t sure what the end goal was. If she left now, she wouldn’t have to worry about running into people for another few days, until she had to come out for more food, but maybe if she stuck with them, she had a better chance of survival overall.

If she left now, she may never see these strangers again and may never have a chance to be with people again before she died, and if she left with them now, she could leave anytime she wanted right? The choice seemed obvious. Although she didn’t like to admit it, she had missed being around people, well civilized people. The act of talking and being around people felt foreign to her now but she hadn’t realized that she had craved it, especially since that night. She quickly shook her head, trying to clear that memory from her mind. More than anything she wanted to forget that.

Axe held down at her side she made her way to the back and leaned against the doorframe on the other side of where Joan and ‘Josef’, if she had heard correctly, were talking to something. It was a bit hard to hear but there were some parts that she could make out from what the man on the radio said. She glanced over at the entrance to the store before staring back ahead. She thought about her words for a moment, hoping that they didn’t sound stupid when they came out. “So…are we gonna go get him?”
How was everyone's week?
When a voice spoke to her from behind her she quickly spun around, axe held at the ready once again but she let it fall to her side rather quickly. Her head hadn’t been caved in yet and he was lowering his own weapon so it was safe to say that these people were probably ‘friendly’, though she wasn’t sure what that meant anymore. She turned back once again to look at the girl and smiled softly when she introduced herself. Just as she was about to do the same, there was a sudden burst of static, which caused her to look around in a panic but it seemed as though Joan was on it, and ran to the back to find out what it was.

Chloe turned back to the man, “I’m alone.” She said, responding to his question. There was a moment of silence as she wondered how much she should share with this man, though for now, it was enough to get him to trust her. “I locked myself up in a motel nearby. Since it seemed like it was quiet I came out to get some food.” She pulled out a granola bar from her pocket and tried to wave it casually, though truthfully she wanted to devour it right now.

She looked him up and down. He was well built, probably could have easily taken her out with that bat if he wanted to. “Thank you for not caving my head in.” She said, motioning towards the baseball bat in his hand. She kept her speech very controlled and calm. “Shouldn’t you be going after her? There may be other people here that neither of us know of… or I could be lying.” She wasn’t lying of course and it was too cheeky in her opinion, but the sooner he stopped watching her, the sooner she could finish up and go back to the motel.
Should I hold out on my next post?
