That works.

I'm assuming (based on the fact that we're discussing how resistant your contact team would be at all) that you're aiming for a "first contact" scenario rather than more established relations? How do you think we should kick that off? Do you want the Kuuros to come to you, or would you rather that some Equestrians stumble into Kuuros space?

Oh, uh. Okay thenAlright, although as mentioned people will still have the will to resist, and considering Archmages are powerful as they are they are usually high-willed compared to other unicorns.

I'm not terribly concerned about people being able to resist the implanted compulsions, or even having countermeasures to stop the hack itself from working (although it would be nice if people were willing to play along, because there's not much point in having the ability if everyone I encounter is somehow immune). I just want people to be clear on what they should be defending against (if they're so inclined); think of the whole thing like a barcode scanner. The sirens wings generate patterns that the "scanner" (that being, your eyes and visual processing cortex) reads and then executes the relevant "command", in this case that command being to make the affected individual consider the siren to be their best friend.

If you can disrupt some step of that process, you're safe. Visibility is a concern (can't see the patterns, can't be hacked), and if people used cybernetics or augmented reality they could "screen out" the patterns in real-time and basically put a big censor bar over them from their perspective.

Long-term exposure to the compulsion effect gradually eats away at your ability to resist it and makes you more pliable, though; the non-siren kjurii thralls are more or less incapable of resisting because they've been exposed to the effects for their whole lives.

I would of course, but expect during the contact for the ponies and other races onboard to be immune to the effects of the sirens. Generally during diplomatic contact there is a Archmage there, and Archmages are some of the best when it comes to magic. There is a telepathic branch of magic and it can also be used to resist telepathic suggestion, which is what the Sirens ability is. This is mainly due and part that the Equestrians are paranoid about security and just general rules of first contact.

Sirens abilities aren't telepathic in nature at all, actually. Its a visual-based neurological hack, not psionics. Any commands issued need to be issued verbally.
Sweet.

Anybody want to volunteer for some interaction? Up to you whether or not this would be "first contact" or not.
Name of Nation:
-- Kuuros Banner
Species:
-- Kjurii, aka "Sirenbirds"
-- Image
-- Bird-like humanoids with brilliant white plumage and patterning in black and red. A subpopulation of the main species known as "sirens" may use the small, nonfunctional wings on their hips to display patterns which function as a form of basilisk hack; individuals exposed will be temporarily brainwashed into considering the siren their best friend, and commands given during this period can persist as compulsions after the main effects have worn off.
Description of Government:
-- All decisions within Kuuros are made by the sirens, who maintain a loosely-consolidated meritocratic government with strong hereditary leanings. There is no single central leadership figure, with decisions instead falling into jurisdictional boundaries between broad psuedo-familial House-chapters.
Description of Military:
-- The Kuuros military is mostly composed of non-siren kjurii, driven to almost fanatical levels of devotion through careful use of implanted commands and frequent exposure to the sirens basilisk hacks. Technologically, the kjurii make use of accelerator platforms, plasma beamcasters, smart munitions, and drone support.
History:
-- The history of the kjurii is rather long and tragic, tracing its roots back to the discovery of a prehistoric hive-entity which took control of the species and created the sirens to serve them. While the kjurii have largely renounced the less savoury parts of their society, their civilization is still built upon the right to rule of the sirens, and the sirens themselves often have issues in dealing with other species due to how naturally their talents come to them.

I'm interested in joining, but I wanted to check to make sure that my first idea is plausible before I write anything up. What's your stance on a species that has a "charm person" ability? That is to say, they can convert anyone in a short visual distance into their best friends temporarily and implant longer-lasting directives while the subject is in this state.
On further reflection I'm more or less dropping out of this myself. If anybody wants to do a plot between their stuff and mine hit me up with a PM, but otherwise don't expect to see me post anything.

It's okay, I have other RP ideas and there's probably too many space RPs in the NRP section as is currently, especially since someone revived orbitum.

Keep me posted if you launch anything else. I might be interested, especially if I've got a chance to use a neat species.
Damn shame nobody seems interested anymore. I was really hoping that this one would get moving.
I have a question regarding the "no instant FTL" rule and how it relates to wormhole-related mechanisms. Presumably a direct window-style wormhole isn't allowed, but if the wormhole instead opens a "tunnel" that one must traverse between the two points, just how long does that tunnel have to be? Where do you draw the line between "effectively instantaneous" and "acceptable travel time"?

I mean, a wormhole tunnel that stretches five feet is technically not instantaneous and requires you to spend however long it takes to move five feet to get from point A to point B, but that seems like it'd still be unacceptable.
