Harry was almost sorted into Slytherin, in fact he only was sorted into Gryffindor simply because he asked. you kind of contradicted yourself by mentioning Harry almost being sorted into Slytherin. i think the whole purpose of that was to show that it really just came down to which house you want to be in. for example Hermione despite being one of the smartest students at Hogwarts during her years at the school, was put in Gryffindor even though many thought that she should gone into Ravenclaw. she is brave and has courage, but her academic skills and intellect far exceed both of those traits, so realistically she should have been sorted into Ravenclaw. i think what JK Rowling was trying to say was that it really just comes down to your choice and what you really want deep down.
