This is kind of W.I.P, but still ready to go.

The Apocalypse as you’d imagine it. We woke up one day and noticed the sea was red. It all started with a faint, rust red on the horizon in the morning, but by sundown even the beaches looked like they were bleeding bright blood. Bacteria, excess minerals, anything that could contribute were said by scientist on national television to be the cause. On the second day radio signals became rare and messy. On the third day, villagers of any town with a port could smell a faint metallic odor in the air. On the fourth day they came.

At that point of history, same to now, we hadn’t discovered every monster in the sea yet, but anyone with scientific knowledge was baffled by what they found – or rather, what found them. Giant octopi that pulled themselves on land, bioluminescent swordfishes that travelled in swarms, gliding up and diving back down like dolphins would. Whirlpools bred, little families of deadly ocean zooplankton eating away all passive sea life you’d normally encounter before nature started going against us. The borders of continents were swallowed up as parasols and corpses started floating about the raging sea. Eventually humanity fought back, but couldn’t save what was already lost. Hope had been drowned after a year of agitation, but in the end everything stopped. Everything didn’t go back to normal, but rather became normal, and humans adapted.

By the year 2421 nobody was alive to remember the huge tear in the previous status quo, and the smell of rust had become fresh air. Masks were required for those who wished to approach the sea, unless they were villagers who had lived on generation after generation next to a huge death puddle. Fauna on land remained the same, with mutations that weren’t exactly disarming, and capitals were built as far from marine life as possible. Half the people there would never know of the huge communities built around the terrors of the sea, who fished up the most violent, poisonous things for them to feast on as delicacies. Humans are such magnificent creatures! Nature attacked them, smacked them against themselves, crushed their culture under its devilish cephalopods and what do we do? We eat them. Humans just eat them.

A giant ship with a pointed bowsprit made of dusty purple shell, inching its way towards the port. There are a number of ships the same, who go a step further than nets for capturing algae-eating sea turtles, and who go a step further than rickety chelonians. Its canons were still hot from battle, on its deck two long necked monsters and packs of carnivores ready to be sold. Its captain, infamous for her ruthlessness and famous for her victories, stood on the forecastle, sword in hand. Beneath the empty hangman’s nooses were written in big metallic letters, SS LEAK. A fearsome name.
