How about we play out the raid before this whole ordeal, basically the characters on a ship sailing from place to place to raid stuff? Don't know how interesting it would be.. it would probably turn into ''fight at location x, sail to location y, fight at location y, sail to location z..''

Yeah, I'm not sure. I mean, any idea can work with a dedicated group that's willing to contribute, but those players are sadly few and far between. I think the idea of having a ship is interesting, but I do think having some kind of driving force would be helpful too. If the raiding party returned from a raid (successful or otherwise) to find their village destroyed or something, it might compel them to go seek out and destroy the people responsible. Gives it a bit of a questy starting point.

Just an idea we could chew on. Also, trying to make all the interactions either traveling or fighting isn't the best idea, in my opinion. Too much fighting becomes just as monotonous as too little. My two cents, anyway.

Nono, what I was saying was exactly that: I dont want the travel, fight, travel, fight as it becomes boring quickly.

Ah, I read that incorrectly then. We're in agreement :)

I probably just worded it in a weird way. Happens more often than I'd like. Sometimes it's hard for me to get the meaning of my sentences just right. :P

Either way, the questy stuff is important but I'm not sure I like the village being plundered. It's a bit standard place stuff for RP's like these and I feel like being original, haha. How about we make it into a proper saga though. We're in the village, and get to be sent on an epic queste of sorts?

Are we looking to keep the sort of "misfits" angle? It worked for exile, but it doesn't seem like those types of characters would get picked for something important to the village.

No, but that might be exactly why they are sent - they are not of any value and are sent to do x. X turns out to be bigger than it is.. so turns to y. And y turns out to be pretty damn epic.

That would definitely work, though obviously figuring out what x and y are is the next hurdle.

Harder than it seems, believe me. I've got no clue where to start.

Are we still going for a purely realistic angle or would we mix some mystic/mythical elements into it to?

It doesn't really matter to me but the lack of realistic RP's around (it's all anime about girls dressed as maids and butlers) makes me inch towards realistic.

Ever seen The 13th Warrior? I kinda like the idea of the small band of people up against some weird, mysterious enemy that comes and goes. There was nothing really mystic or mythic about it, but there was still a lot of mystery and stuff because the exact nature of the enemy was largely unknown.

Never seen it. Got any idea how we could implement that? It sounds interesting, surely.

That's actually the kind of scenario I was imagining.

Well, the movie's set around a Norse village that's being harassed by these mountain people that they know nothing about, the main thing with them being that they only attack under the cover of fog or extreme darkness, so they're never seen. They drag any of their dead away so no bodies can be studied and it seems like none of them are killed in the attacks, and they're very animalistic in dress and such, so they don't even really seem human. They turn out to be just human cannibals who worship bears, and a small detachment of Viking warriors go to sneak into their mountains and kill their bear queen lady. It's a pretty solid action movie. I don't know if a plot like that can really be shifted into an RP form, but it could probably be done.

We could travel east as hirelings to the Russians, who would then send us to fight the Mongols? Rather unrealistic, and if we want to we could add some unknown aspects to them and change the way they are so they would be a bit more mythical?

What about the new world, I mean Viking's were the first Europeans to set foot on America, and they encountered Native Americans, and plenty of shows and movies portray natives as being 'mystical.'

I like this idea. Wayward Vikings (maybe exiled even) with a ship, sailing west and eventually finding a coastline that they know nothing about. It might have a bit of the same problem in the "what do we do now" regard, but really, it wasn't the plot that killed this RP here, it was people disappearing. So just... don't disappear I guess, haha.
