It is late in the evening in small town Boldwin. The sky is painted a deep orange as the sun was setting, and the air was filled with the sounds of train horns. The last couple of trains were being brought back to the station for maintenance. As the sun continued to descend, the lights in lamps and on buildings began to flicker on to welcome the night...well, all but one building anyways.

The old theater, unlike the other buildings, had seen better days. The old plaster walls were cracked, and the doors looked like they were ready to fall off of the hinges. The inside wasn't much better with the consession counter covered in a thick blanket of dust and the brown carpet beginning to tear. Cobwebs decorated the various corners of the room and in what appeared to be a hole in the wall. This place looked like an artifact of the past.

"This was a terrible mistake" said a girl near the front of the room. She was standing next to a man in his mid forties. He took his top hat off and looked at the place with mild amusement.

"So it's a bit run down" he said nonchalantly. "It's nothing that a little paint and house keeping can't fix".

"But are you sure we can afford that?" The younger person looked very concerned.

"Of course we can, Vi" he patted her on the shoulder. "It's not just going to be me. We're all going to pitch in. If we can make this work, then we can keep doing what we love!" This made Vi smile.

"Alright. You can count on me, boss!"

"Splendid. Now, why don't you go backstage and settle in like everyone else?" He gave the girl a pat on the head".

"Okie dokie". Vi bolted off to get to the backstage area and see how the others were doing. She was sure that Jon and Marie were doing okay. They were much older than she was anyways. She was more curious to see how her brother was doing.

[THUMP] [CRAAAASH]

“Ungh…HEY! What’re you lookin’ at!?” shouted an auburn-haired boy with a frustrated expression, in a light, but mature voice.

In a fit of embarrassed blushing, the boy shot up, shooting wicked glares at the people who were staring at him. It was enough of an embarrassment that he fell at all, but to fall on his butt as people watched? It was pure humiliation. Vandal took a hit to more than just his behind, his pride was injured as well.

“I was right to question the safety of those lights…” claimed a deeper-voiced, heavily muscular man, a satisfied grin on his face as he watched the boy get up.

“Vandal…sweet lord! Are you alright?” sounded another, calmer voice from a sweet lady with a long beard. She made her way towards the boy, reaching out to help him up as she got closer.

The boy shot up, ignorant of both people, “I’m fine!” he stubbornly claimed, brushing a few pieces of glass off of his shirt and arms as he walked away from the broken overhead lamp which landed beside him, “besides, I’ve survived much worse.”

The bearded lady looked over at the muscle man with a knowing grin and giggled slightly, to which the muscled man returned a chuckle. The auburn-haird boy frowned at both of them hotly as they chuckled, interpreting it as chiding, but quickly turned away to look for a broom. The backstage area was a rather large room, just like the stage, with a bunch of old props, dusty scenery boards, and plenty more hazards and dangers. There were a few doors around the room, two for the male and female dressing rooms, one both ends of the stage, and two to different sections of the extra rooms which were passionately known as living quarters.

The other member was resting in his own living quarters, exhausted from moving in. Vandal decided not to bother the guy, instead making the clearly more logical decision to climb about near the ceiling and mess around with hanging light fixtures. The bearded lady joked that, if they duck-taped dusters to him, they could just leave for a day and all the dust would be gone when they returned. The teen resented this joke, although he admitted it was not bad as he was swinging about earlier.

He shook his head as he lifted up a broom and dustpan resting beside a trash-bin. As he walked back, he looked around the place for better places to climb around. This place is too rotten to climb around. he thought, kneeling down beside the broken lamp to brush up the glass shards. Behind him, he heard a door opening, and quickly looked over his shoulder to see who it was.

“Vi!” he exclaimed, standing up with one hand on the broom as he loomed over the broken shards. After a moment, he remembered what he did a minute ago and quickly stumbled to say, “uh…umm…It was a rotten light which was poorly attached! I hold no blame for this…” then crossed his arms and made a pouty expression as he looked away, peering over at Vi after a second, then quickly looking away again to continue his pout.

The muscle man, who was still moving a few of the props out of the way of another series of rooms, heard Vandal and chuckled a little. “They’re nothing like trapezes now, are they?” he said, his full voice still partly mocking the boy as he spoke. Vandal tried to ignore him, but ended up grumbling a few words under his breath and returning to his task, pouting slightly as he swept up the glass.

The backstage didn't look much better than the lobby. Vi could swear that she's never seen this much dust in her life. When she walked through the door, she saw her bro sweeping up what looked like some old stage lights and broken glass shards. "Vandal! Hey there, little trouble maker. What did you do this time?" She took a moment to listen to his case and consider it carefully.

"They're nothing like trapezes now, are they?" she heard the muscle man comment.

"Ooooooooooh, so THAT'S what happened!" She looked at Vandal with a smile as she grabbed an extra broom. She thought that he might appreciate the help, even if he didn't want to show it. "Yea...this place isn't like our old tents. Everything's just sorta falling apart". Vi noticed that Some of the glass got stuck really good into the wooden floorboards. "You know...I wonder if this is a good idea. I mean...I would love to continue what we do, but...I'm not sure we'll be able to fix this place up with the money we have. I know the boss said not to worry about it, but..." she trailed off as she focused her attention on getting a few of the glass shards out of the floor.

Vandal busily went about his work, carefully collecting pieces of glass as his sister spoke her thoughts next to him. The muscle man must have finished moving stuff around, because he was no longer backstage when the teen looked around. To the same extent, the bearded lady was gone as well. They could at least offer to help, he though, his pouting expression shifting towards a frown.

A few moments after he turned back, he saw Vi approaching with another broom. Vandal lifted up the broken lamp to see even more glass below it, then used his shirt to twist the remains of the light bulb out of the socket. “If you’re going to help, be careful,” he mumbled, placing the bulb in the dust-pan as he placed the lamp a few feet away from the mess. He nodded in agreement as his sister started to speak, but was too focused on cleaning to listen to the first few sections of what she said next. From what he did hear, he pieced together what he understood to be what she said.

“We’ll get money, Vi,” he started, frowning as he watched her pluck sharp pieces of glass out of the floor, “hey, don’t worry about those, I’ll take it from here,” he commented, interrupting himself as he gently pushed her hands away. After a second, he continued, “we’ve never performed in a city before, especially not in this area. As long as we do what we always do, we’ll be fine.” Despite these words, an unsettling chill shot down his spine after saying them. He pulled out the last few shards of glass, then wiped the floor with his shirt to make sure there weren’t any more, and picked up the dustpan.

“What I’m worried about is this ‘high school’ he was talking about,” he continued, walking over to the trash bin. He dumped the glass into the metal cylinder, then commented, “it sounds tough, based on what he said.” Immediately after hearing himself say this, he placed the cleaning supplies down and puffed up with pride, claiming, “not as if I couldn’t handle it!” and then deflating as he looked back at Vi and thoughtfully continued, “but I have no idea what to expect.”

Vi froze for a moment at the mention of high school. On their way to this little theater, the ring leader mentioned that both her and Vandal were going to have to attend a school. What is school like? What kind of things would I do there? These thoughts bounced around in the girl's head as she zoned off and focused on nothing in particular. She had spent her entire life in the circus and with the other carnies. The thought of being thrust out into the real world sent a shiver up her spine. Then, she thought back to what their boss told them about high school. Apparently, there would be over several hundred other people around their age...and they are going to have to learn stuff. It wasn't the kind of fun stuff like learning a routine or a new trick. It was, as the big man himself put it, "practical knowledge". Working with numbers, writing essays, learning another language, science, history, PE, electives....Her vision began to blur and her head felt light.

"...but I have no idea what to expect" Vandal's words snapped her out of her self induced anxiety attack. One look at the floor in front of them told her that they were just about done cleaning up all of the glass.

"O-Oh. Um...Yea. Me neither" she responded with a light sigh. "I'm...actually really nervous about school". It was true that they don't have a lot of experience out there in the real world, but they weren't stupid...at least, she didn't think they were stupid. "You know? We might both be a little worried about this, but we should be fine? I mean, we should be fine as long as we stick together" she tried her best to reassure Vandal.

Vandal walked over to Vi and gently patted her on the shoulder as she thought aloud, unsure of what to add. After a moment of silence, he looked down at the ground, still noticing a few sparkles of broken glass, and frowned. “I thought I was done cleaning that…” he commented, crouching down to take a closer look. He then got up and, as he walked back to get the cleaning supplies, smiled at Vi and calmly noted, “boss guy said that we would have ‘home room’ together, so I’ll be there for you all year, no sweat!”

As he picked up the dustpan once again, he frowned briefly, unsure of what this “home room” was, but it sounded right to him, so he shrugged off his frown and walked back to Vi. “If what he said is right, school is like a huge, really long performance,” he paused for a moment, thinking to himself as he bent down to pick up the last few pieces of glass. When he continued, he chuckled slightly. “It is sorta like our circuis! Our performances are on paper instead of in the ring, namely the tests, and the audience is the teachers! It’s different from what we know, but other people can do it, so we can too!” With this said, he carefully rose up, eyeing the floor once more to make sure that all of the glass was gone, and walked back to the dust bin to deposit the glass. “Finally done…” he mumbled, dropping the dust pan next to the broom hastily as he rose up.

With a conflicted smile, Vandal walked back over to Vi. He wanted to stop thinking about school. It was all about reading books and getting to places on time…right? No matter what he imagined the place to be like, he could only assume that it was not going to be as fun as reading novels all day. Boss guy always leaves out the bad side of things he thought, stopping next to Vi.

"Like the circus..." this made Vi smile a little to herself. If school really was like the circus, then it would be a breeze. But...she wanted to stop thinking about school right now. The whole thing seemed incredibly scary. As Vandal put the dust pan and broom away and walked net to her, she tried to change the subject.

"So, umm..." she started. Vi had this bad habit of starting a thought before she knew what she wanted to say. There was a bit of a pause that lingered in the stale air. Deciding to just get it out there, she just spoke her mind. "I know it's kinda late, but do you want to go to the school? Just to see what the place looks like? I mean, we don't have to if you don't want to. I'm just starting to think the air in here is getting a little stale".

As his sister claimed the right to speak, [but waited before using it] Vandal grinned mischievously for a moment and watched her silently, trying to read her expression. He felt a pit form in his chest as the silence dragged on for a few seconds, but he resisted the urge to speak, compelled to reserve her right to continue speaking. The dusty atmosphere only made the pause feel more lengthy as particles of dust danced around the two, dully illuminated by the distant lights which Vandal left untouched.

The pause ended, relieving the pit in Vandal’s chest, as Vi continued with a proposition. To his surprise, he didn’t have any immediate objection to her idea. All he knew about school was based off the ringmaster’s description. It’s not that I don’t trust him, he thought, shaking a few dark thoughts from his mind as he inhaled, preparing to speak. “You’re right about the air,” he started, fanning the space in front of his face with his hand, resulting in a flurry of dust, “but we better ask the ringmaster before wandering off. We don’t want to get lost again,” he said, another sly smile spreading across his face as he walked towards the stage entrance door and recounted the farcical episode he alluded to.

After reaching the door he held it open for his sister with a more sincere smile, then followed her over to the ringleader. [who I don’t know how to name or describe]

Vi gave her brother a smile as she followed him out the door to talk to the ring leader.

In the other room, a portly fellow in his forties dressed in a red blazer, white undershirt, bow tie and black slacks was hunched over a desk. The desk was scattered with several papers. They were several types of legal papers that he was reading through. Another set of papers looked like something to set their budget. As he jotted a few notes down with his short pencil, he used his other hand to run his hand through his thin grey hair. Vi and Vandal approached him from behind.

"Hey there, boss!" she made her presence known. "Whatchya doooin?"

"Oh, just a bit of paperwork. You don't need to concern yourself with it" he adjusted his reading glasses. "Are you liking the theater so far?" Vi stood there for a moment, unsure how to answer.

"It's..." she started. Vi wracked her head to come up with an appropriate answer. "dusty". That wasn't quite it. She took the chance to change the topic. "So dusty, in fact, that Vandal and I were thinking of stepping out for a bit. We want to see the school we'll be attending. Can we?"

"At this hour?" the ringleader slowly swiveled in his chair to face the two. "you two will just get lost again".

"Oh come on, gramps! That was when we were little babies!" She puffed her cheeks out like some sort of pouty blow fish. "We're older. And smarter. We just want to get a good feel of where we'll be going in the mornings. Come on, Simon. Let us see the school. Pleeeeeeeeeeeeease?" The ring leader began to think about it for a moment.

"Oooooh....Oh alright. You two can go. But I expect you two to be on your best behaviors. I don't want to hear that you got taken into the police station for sleeping on some store's furniture".

"Yaaay!" Vi cheered as she grabbed Vandal's shoulder. "Come on! Lets go see our school before the sun goes down!"

After finding the ringleader, who was casually, but lazily dressed, Vandal patiently allowed his sister to convince the man. He noticed Simon glance over at him a few times while contemplating Vi’s pleadings, but remained calm overall, awaiting the ringleader’s response. He could not help but chuckle in embarrassment, remembering the last time they wandered around in a city, as Simon brought up the furniture store, but quickly wiped the embarrassment from his face as his sister grabbed his shoulder.

“Okay! Okay! Sheesh!” he exclaimed, matching his sister’s excited pace. He adopted a smug smile and, after opening the door to the city outside, commented, “I think I know where the school is this time.” He pointed to the right and said, “gramps already showed us the way to the school this morning on the way here, remember?” He then walked over to the street corner and paused, watching cars pass by. He waited for a minute and asked his sister, “what do you think the school will look like on the inside?” He continued waiting as he spoke to her, but the cars would not stop passing by. Before his ego could object, Vandal asked, “uhh, I forgot, how do we get those people to stop for us?” as he looked over at Vi.

After she responded, his face flushed red slightly and he turned away, quickly interrupting her as he realized what the answer was, ashamed by its obviousness. He pressed the little button on the pole which held up the nearby signal lights and, after the white walking person appeared on the black box above the other side of the street, he noticed that the cars stopped. He also noticed an odd chirping sound, and looked around to find the source of it, but failed.

After realizing that Vi started crossing the street without him, he quickly caught up and stood beside her, commenting, “oh, sorry,” as he continued moving along. He could not help but look around as the two continued walking along the concrete path. The walls had interesting posters on them, the glass had amazing displays behind it, and the signs were all clean and nice-looking, although Vandal could only recognize a few of the signs. He pointed to the most familiar one and said, “that’s a food place which makes food really fast and cheap. We can probably get lunch there so that Simon doesn’t have to work as hard for us.”

After passing the second street light, Vandal turned left, because there was no way to continue straight along the road. He shepherded his sister back to his side as he did so, standing between her and a long line of rugged-looking men walking along the street-side of the sidewalk. After one more street light, they walked along the side of the road and noticed a park-like area with buildings within it to their right. “This has to be it,” Vandal declared, grinning excitedly at Vi, “it’s a bigger place than I thought.”

Off they go! The two children exited the theater and began walking down the sidewalk as Vandal recounted the way to school, but right now, she was just glad that she was breathing in fresh air. "Yea. It isn't too far of a walk from here" she said, walking a few inches behind her brother. As they got to the crosswalk, he asked her about the insides of the school. Hmm...that was a tough one. After thinking about it for a moment, she answered "To be quite honest, I have no idea what it would look like in there...probably something super fancy though". She really hoped that the inside wouldn't be anything like the interior of their new theater. That's when she noticed Vandal having some issues with crossing the street. "How to stop them?" she asked for affirmation. She ran her finger across her chin while thinking. That's when she noticed the pole with the walking man on it and a few buttons. "Oh. Try that". After Vandal pushed the button, the red hand changed into another walking person. "Oh look, that must mean we can go now" she exclaimed as she began crossing the street, not even realizing her brother was a little behind.

"Wow, look at all of these posters!" the two of them continued walking along the sidewalk as Vandal pointed out a few of the food related posters. "It would be nice to eat out every now and again to give boss man a break, but I don't think we have the money for that...oh well. We'll find a way". As they turned, she felt Vandal pull her in tighter. When she was about to voice a complaint, she noticed the burly looking men walking past them. She decided to just hold her breath for now. After that, they finally came across what they assumed to be the school. The two of them stared at the building in awe for a moment.

"Yea. it's so green over here. Greener than the other parts of town" the high school that stood before them was one giant building with a few smaller buildings off to the sides. It had a large back area where all of the greenery and park like qualities were. The front of the building had a bit of an opening and a statue of a man riding a horse. Vi looked from side to side in awe as they got closer to the building.

The trees that lined the sidewalk were gently swaying in the wind as a few yellow and amber leaves flutter to the ground. As the two children stare at this place, the realization crept up on Vi, which made her shiver in place. "Bro...we're going to be spending most of our time in this building". It's not that she didn't know that already, but it was taking her some time to adjust to the fact that they are no longer living the life they used to live. No more traveling from place to place while meeting all sorts of people and seeing so many different sights along the way.

"Hey Vandal?" she turned to her brother. "We're going to be here for a while, right?" Watching the cars driving by along the road was somewhat relaxing. If she weren't out here with Vandal in the evening, she would probably just watch them drive by all day. "Um...where was I? ...Oh, right. So boss man said that we would be getting holiday breaks or something. Wouldn't it be nice if we could travel somewhere else during those breaks? We could go somewhere new for a while and be back before school started again".

Vandal quietly walked alongside Vi as she walked closer to the towering main school building. He restrained himself from “exploring” the environment by biting the second knuckle of his thumb and focusing on the building up ahead. He convinced himself that what Vi had to say was more important than climbing on the impressive-looking statue in the middle of the front courtyard of the school. He also had to ignore the swaying of the trees in the wind, because a few of the trees were very impressive and tall, more than adequate for tree-climbing. In fact, these trees looked almost sturdy enough to support someone at the end of the branch. Vandal imagined himself, reclined on one of the higher tree branches on a frigid winter day, enjoying a steamy hamburger and fries, the aroma of crisp, golden potatoes wafting towards him as he eagerly reaches for the first bite of his meal…

But, all too suddenly, he was thrown from his mental image by the feeling of liquid on his hand. He quickly released his hand from his mouth and subtly dried it with his shirt, blocking the signals of embarrassment he felt running through his brain from reaching his face. He managed to tune in just in time to hear Vi ask him a question, but when he realized that she was looking at him, he awkwardly shot his attention back towards the building. He paused for a moment, but managed to construct a reasonable response without too awkward a pause, “If what Simon told me is right, we’ll be here six days a week from sunrise to some time late in the afternoon all year, besides summer, for the next four years. ”

After another question from Vi, Vandal stopped moving next to a park-bench and commented, “If Boss doesn’t have us doing performances during our holidays, we could probably travel somewhere briefly. But remember, we will also have Sundays off of school. This city is pretty big, so we can probably get to know it better and find good places to eat or such with our free time.” He then looked ahead at the school building and commented, “I wonder if we can try the front door of the building.”

After a few moment’s pause to get Vi’s feedback, his feet began moving on their own, bringing him closer to the door. Within no time, he had reached the double metal doors with the long, wired windows, and found himself peeking in through the glass. Without a doubt, he was looking at the longest corridor he had ever seen. The door led into a long hall of metal and tile, leading on to what could possibly have been the other end of the building. Vandal tried pushing, pulling, twisting, shoving, and even unhinging the door, hoping to figure out a hidden mechanism which would undo the lock, but to no avail. “No luck, but man, that’s a really long hallway. Maybe there’s another way in…”

With this said, he backed away from the door and started looking around above the door, around the corner, and over at other doors on the other side of the courtyard. There was a much more obvious “front door” which had a large “welcome back” banner hanging over it, but what really caught Vandal’s attention was an open window on the top floor. The window was propped open barely enough to reach a thin arm through, but Vandal saw it as an opportunity. “Well, I know how to get us in,” he commented, looking over to his sister with a mischievous smile, “want to see how?”

As she was talking, Vi looked over at her brother and saw that he was more interested in looking at the trees around them. No doubt that he was trying to think of ways to climb every inch of this school. She didn't mind, really. He wouldn't be Vandal if he weren't thinking of that. "Six days, huh?" That...sounded a little upsetting, actually. Six days a week is a lot of time. they were going to have to find a way to spend their time doing stuff that they wanted to do. Could they balance that stuff with their school responsibilities? She didn't have the answer for that, so they would have to wait. When she asked Vandal her question, and he responded, she thought about that for a moment.

"Yea...the city is awfully big. I'm sure we could find plenty to do". If there was one thing Vi really liked about new places, it was getting to try the local food. Her mouth drooled a little just thinking about it. Then, she saw her brother moving up to the front of the school out of the corner of her eye. "Bro? I don't think they're open yet" she warned him. The curious sister decided to follow her brother anyways. When they got up to the strange door, she watched him look through the window and comment on the length of the hallway. "Really? I wanna see". When he backed away, she got up to the door and looked through. "Woooooah" her mouth hung slightly. It really was long. Lockers were mounted in the walls all through the hall, and the room looked dead. It was almost kind of spooky. That's when she heard Vandal talking about a way to get in.

"Brother, I don't think they're open. We should just come back when..." her words died as she saw the welcoming banner. "Oh...I guess they are open. I think. I wonder who they're welcoming back". She then saw the window Vandal was talking about. Her brow furrowed a bit. "Bro...I don't think there's any reason to sneak in. Maybe we could just go through the front door to see what's going on?" She didn't want to put a stamp on his fun, but she really didn't want to get into trouble before school even started.

Vandal sighed in disappointment at his sister’s response, but his expression still held a hint of curiosity as he looked over to her. “I suppose you’re right,” he admitted, grinning at her as he started walking over to the double metal doors at the front of the building. He mentally promised himself that he would redeem himself for his previous failure at some point in the future. I’ll get the chance here, no doubt. I’ve never met another city person who can climb like me, he thought, walking up to the door.

As he turned the handle on the door, he frowned and sighed. “Looks like we’re out of luck,” he commented, backing away from the door and looking up at the banner, “a real great welcoming this is.”

Vandal paused after saying this, thinking about the words on the banner for the first time. “Welcome back? Maybe they’re welcoming the other people who come here each year,” he said, thinking aloud, “I doubt it is directed at us.”

After waiting for a few moments, Vandal turned back towards the street. “Well, we’ve seen the building. Clearly they don’t want anyone getting in, so we should go back and finish settling into the theater.” He resented the locks on the big double-doors, and mentally added, “buy a lockpicking tutorial book” to his checklist as he looked over to Vi. He paused, then asked, “or do you really want to get into the building?”

So, as the two siblings were walking up to the metal doors, Vi was more than happy to see what the inside of the building was like...only to be disappointed when Vandal couldn't get the door to open.

"Oh...I guess the event ended" she commented. That's strange...because the banner is still up. Now that he mentioned it, it does seem odd that the school would welcome new students the way they'd greet those who had already been going here for a while. It's a shame, but she supposed she could wait to see what the inside looked like on the day they actually went. "Nah, you're right bro. We should get back to the theater before the sun sets". As she began walking down the sidewalk, going back the way they came, it wasn't until she reached the intersection that something dawned on her.

"Umm..." her cheeks went red as she desperately frantically looked back and forth, all around the intersection. I don't remember the way home, she thought to herself. But she would be damned if she'd let her brother know that, especially after she convinced Simon that they wouldn't get lost this time. The girl tapped her cheek as she thought. Just keep acting like you know what you're doing, and maybe you'll find your way home. Now that she was repeating this mantra in her head, she pressed the button for the pedestrian signal to go left. "Right. We'll be home in no time. It's a good thing too, I was getting a little hungry".

Vandal nodded at Vi’s response without saying a word, and started to lead the way back to the street. The acrobat was too busy thinking to himself to talk to Vi up until they reached the first intersection. Vandal looked over at Vi once he realized that she hadn’t spoken in awhile and, to his surprise, she looked embarrassed.

“Did something happen?” he asked, stopping next to the pedestrian signal-button as he waited to cross. His sister started to talk, but Vandal could tell by her response that she was nervous about something, even if she wasn’t telling him. Women are so mysterious, he thought, picturing himself chuckling internally at the thought so as to not act weird externally.

“You still haven’t answered me,” Vandal commented, repeating himself by saying, “did something happen? You look pretty nervous.” He then paused, but quickly interrupted himself by saying, “Oh, right, it’s school isn’t it? No need to worry, the building may be larger than we thought, but that’s going to make it even more fun to wander around in.” At this, he paused briefly to press the cross signal once again, this time to head straight, and continued soon after by saying, “plus, the theater is only a few minutes away, so if something bad happens, or if we forget something, we can get back to the theater really quickly.”

Vandal got the feeling that his words were wasted, after peeking back at his sister for a moment, but excused the feeling for the success he felt as he saw the sign for the theater hanging down over the sidewalk two blocks to his right. He pressed the turn signal, eager to return to his reading at home, and waited for the cars to stop shuffling along.

"Y-Yea! That's exactly it" She said, hoping that would be enough for her brother. "I'm just so nervous about going to school". She saw hit the button to go straight, and bit her lip a little. What if left were the right way, and they'd get lost again? They would never let her live this down. No, wait. Maybe her brother knew the way back to the theater. She would just have to trust his judgement. If he's right, then they will find their way back to the theater. As she was thinking things through, Vandal looked back at her for a moment. She just smiled at him, trying her best not to seem like she didn't know what she was doing.

And then, they saw the theater in the distance. Ooooh, sweet relief. They weren't going to have to have to wander around aimlessly. All they needed to do now was wait for the turn signal. So as they waited for what seemed like a long time, a man in his thirties was making his way down the sidewalk. He kept his hat over his eyes and his hands in his pockets. Just as the signal turned to let them cross, the man forcefully bumped into Vi's shoulder. "OW!" She yelped.

"Pardon" the mysterious man said as he rushed his way down the sidewalk".

Vi rubbed her sore shoulder as she watched the man walk off. "Ow....rude".

As they waited for the signal, Vandal looked around, trying to memorize the way back to the school building. It took him a few seconds before he noticed the mysterious man walking towards them, but ignored the person until he got really close. Vandal frowned and leaned over to look up under the man’s hat, noting that the guy was purposefully trying to hide his face.

Unfortunately, the stranger noticed Vandal’s efforts and frowned. The stranger rushed a few feet towards them, and Vandal quickly stood back up. “What are you-“ Vandal started, interrupted as the stranger roughly bumped into Vi. Vandal quickly pulled Vi between himself and the stranger, but the odd guy was already rushing away, his hands still in his pockets. “Are you okay?” Vandal asked, looking between her eyes and her shoulder as they walked to the other side of the street, “I’m sorry, I should’ve been quicker,” he continued, rambling nervously.

By the time they made it to the next crosswalk, the stranger was long gone. Vandal remembered his frown, but with each step, the individual features of the man’s face became more and more blurry. “If we see him again, I’ll return the favor for you,” Vandal commented, still frowning, half embarrassed.

Once the two had reached the theater once again, Vandal opened the front door for Vi and followed her inside. He followed her over to the ringleader, who was wandering around the audience chairs looking for something, and, after listening to Simon and his sister talk for a few seconds, he commented, “we found the school, but it was locked. I think we’ll have to wait until school starts to get inside.”

"Hmm? Yea, I'm fine". Honestly, the nerve of some of these people. He didn't even stick around to apologize to her. Oh well. Vandal looks like he's ready to get him back if they see him again, so she decided not to dwell on it for too long. "I wonder who that man was" she wondered aloud. The two of them continued to walk until they eventually got back to the theater. "Oh. Thank you" she said as she walked into the building. "Yo, boss! We're back!"

Simon, who was looking for the keys to the front door, poked his head up from behind one of the many auditorium seats. "Ah. Welcome back you two. Did it go well?"

"Mhm". She made her way toward the stage while keeping her eyes on her boss. "Didn't even get lost once!"

"Is that so?" that was uplifting to hear. Maybe these kids will fit right in with everything else. "Well, hopefully you'll both be able to memorize this town like the back of your hands one day". That's when Vandal told him about the school. "Ah, yes. It isn't surprising that the school wouldn't be open today. It shouldn't be too big of an issue, but remind me to take the both of you to go shopping for school supplies sometime before classes start".

"Hey boss, what're you doing?" Vi suddenly said. The ringleader blinked.

"Oh, nothing really. I just lost the keys to the front door around here somewhere, so I've been looking for them for the past half hour". He went back to investigating the floors to punctuate his point. "If you're both not doing anything, I would appreciate it if you helped me find them".

Vandal watched Simon and Vi talk a bit more, agreeing with Simon’s point about the school supplies with a brief nod, then started to help Simon look for the keys, responding with a quick, “I’d love to help,” before starting to mow through the aisles. The theater had a fairly large audience section, so it took them awhile before Vandal found the keys. “Hey! I found them!” he said after a jingling sound was heard on the floor, “I nearly stepped on them…” The boy then picked up the keys and bounded over the chairs to reach Simon. He offered the man his keys, then asked him, “what are we going to have for dinner tonight, Simon?” with a curious expression, looking over to Vi to see if she was curious as well.
