I imagine tech availability will be all over the map for a game about a world reorganized following some flood of Biblical proportions. So it's unlikely every enemy we face would have guns, only some. That just means things will be varied and we'd have to change up tactics depending on the situation.

I see no problem here.

As a character, I'd rather face gunmen than archers and here is why:

1) 30-60 seconds between each pistol shot versus 3-6 seconds between each arrow.
2) Pistols were only lethal within 10 feet and damaging within 100 feet with an increasing miss chance of half for every 10 feet (100%,50%,25%,15%,7%,3%,1%,). English long-bowmen can hit a 10X10' area at 100 Yards.
3) You have to keep the powder dry, the wick/match dry and lit, the pan dry and full, all while on the seas, in poor weather. Versus a crossbow you can keep knocked for 10 minutes before firing without damaging the bow or waxed string, in any weather.

Please, I'll take the human musketeers over elven archers every day of the week.

Honestly I feel like early pistols will be relatively common, they're a staple of the pirate genre after all. I mean think about it, which is more iconic, a badass pirate with a brace of three or four pistols slung across his chest, or a badass pirate with a bow over his shoulder and a quiver of arrows at his side? Which reminds me, as far as multiple shots, it was common practice for pirates to carry multiple loaded pistols when going into a fight. The reload time may have been slow, but they could still get shots off at the speed of an archer until their guns were empty, and at that point they would usually just switch to melee weapons.

Also, keep in mind that it's a setting with magic. It would be more expensive, but you could totally buy pistols that had enchantments on them to protect them from failing due to water. That's the kind of basic enchantment that would be so useful that there's no way it WOULDN'T get developed.

Well, I DID say pseudo Pirates of the Carribean in the opening post, and they were slinging around pistols all the time there. I'm sorry if there was some confusion in that regard, but I intended to include firearms from square one.

I think I actually really like this one idea. I don't mind guns too much so long as I'm still allowed to make my elven pirate have a bow and possible a pistol thouogh probably not lol. It's go options and I like that.

For sure xD I could totally see Gnomish boats hardly even looking like boats, more like big floating bowls with a bunch of stuff sticking out the top. Unless you're a gnome, it's impossible to tell which end is the front xD

Taking the term 'gnomish gunboat' to an all new meaning. Its a 4 foot long rowboat with a 3 foot long cannon.

Okay, so since we're in need of some ideas, maybe we can start off small with a pirate "job." Raiding a merchant ship with some costly goods they're transporting, maybe?

If we don't want to have our PCs slaughtering innocents (at least right off the bat), they might find the merchant crew all sick, dying/dead, or even see them being attacked and decide to intervene (before they rob the poor saps blind).

Then maybe the pirates discover they were carrying some dubious cargo; a cursed item, a rare monster, etc.

Is there any reason why the topic would refuse to create? Every bloody time I fill out the page for creating a new RP thread in Casual and hit Create Topic, it just seems to reset the page and not create anything. Been trying periodically since about fifteen hours ago.
