People who complained about their average daily lives, wishing for something exciting and dangerous to magically appear, were so goddamn lucky. They didn't have to deal with their whole lives crumbling down on them, where every little thing they did had a large chain reaction. It all started with a simple high school fling, which led to a pregnancy, alcohol, and a long, lonely life. Gaela Agna Wiegand, 36, fucked up big time at the age of 16. Her parents did their best to provide for a newborn and their young daughter, but when graduation came, they kicked her to the curb. Without her child, her home, or high school sweetheart, Gaela relied on the help of her best friend, Dalia Myers, for many years. By the time she was 32, she was finally able to move out and live by herself after landing a stable office job. Until her parents called, explaining how her child, the one they themselves raised, had died due to a heart infection.

In just one phone call, her life continued to spiral down the drain. Instead of paying rent and bills, she drank her savings away and ended up crashing her car into another car. Luckily no one was hurt, but Gaela had to pay for the charges and join an A.A. group. In that same year, some brutal murders began, her best friend being one of the victims. The funeral was barren, no one but her and the priest bothered to come. In just a few years, Gaela managed to pick herself up and move on from her past life, but the murders continued.

Standing just a few steps away from the door, Gaela took a deep breath and knocked hard. When it finally opened, a large, burly woman came out and stared down at the smaller woman. Gaela eyed the badge on her chest, clearing her throat. "Excuse me, officer Warren? I was told you were now in charge of the investigation of,-" before she could finish, the officer interrupted with a loud sigh, rubbing her face. "Ms. Wiegand, listen. You've been around the office for several hours, and we'll just keep telling you the same thing. We can't share our information on the case with you, because we have none. I know it's been several years, and if I were you, I'd be angry and persistent too. But other people are dying too, and we can't just do anything about it yet. If you don't leave now, I will gladly escort you." Gaela opened her mouth to speak, raising a finger, but quickly ceased, turned around, and left.

Mumbling profanities, she left the office and found herself outside where the afternoon rush of Berlin was waiting for her. Everybody was pushing past each other, trying to get to their next destination before it started raining again. She stood on the steps, seemingly lost in thought. 'The police obviously can't do anything, pigs,' she thought. She stayed there for 5 minutes until someone shoved past her to get inside the office. Being pulled from her thoughts, she sighed and began walking home.

"I'm sorry to hear that sir. I'll transfer you to him now."

With a click, the caller was gone. Chewing on a baby carrot, Gaela scrolled through pages and pages on her desktop. She left messages on many forums on how to find someone who could get "hard to reach" information, better yet, a hacker. Many of the replies were ridiculous, the others were just judging her, and almost none of them were actually helpful. "Wiegand, are you busy right now? I need you to file these papers."

Minimizing the browser, she flashed a smile at her coworker, and took the papers from his hand. "Alright. Come back at your lunch, yeah? They'll be done by then." And with that, he was gone. Sighing with frustration, Gaela opened the browser, but found a notification in her email regarding a certain person they knew who could help. She looked over the address in the message, her legs bouncing with excitement and relief at the same time. If not even the police were going to do their job, she would do it for them.

(kill me)

Sunlight entered the dim bedroom, highlighting everything that it touched. Arturo's hand laid on top of the mask that he wore on a daily basis, keeping it close so he wouldn't have to reach far to grab it. It had been days since he'd had any sort of excitement in his life, being a hacker just didn't have its thrills anymore. He went from foolish, meaningless intrusions to nothing now. His hair was strewn about, tangled due to the amount of movement he had done in his sleep. The night before was a blur, one minute he was sitting in front of the computer, tapping away on that damned keyboard of his, and the next he found himself in bed: tired and annoyed.

His eyes flickered open, a groan leaving his lips as his other hand reached for his eyes. The sunlight was blinding, catching the man off guard. Arturo slipped out of bed, making a loud thump on the ground as he collided with it. He groaned again, pushing himself up from the comfort of the soft carpet. The morning had started out as the usual, with him getting his lazy ass out of bed and washing up only to put his mask back on. And when that mask on, he became some kind of mysterious asshole who liked to fuck with the system and get information that would be useful to him in the future. (He also used it as a way to avoid eye contact.)

Arturo sat in front of his screen, knuckles cracking as he prepared himself to be completely engulfed in the joys of the internet. His fingers tapped against the keyboard quickly, signing into every media surface he had: Reddit, old game accounts, etc. With every click, he was redirected to several different forums and other people's accounts that he had gained info from. In every corner of every website, the tragic happenings kept resurfacing. In Berlin, there had been many murders, gruesome enough to make Hannibal Lecter look like a damned Care Bear. Eventually, his browser was lined with articles about the killings, the news even got to the U.S.

The hacker sat there, elbows rested on his desk surface as he read onward and scrolled through the forums, trying to dodge everything that was related to what was going on in the city he resided in. Gore, kitten videos, he tried everything but every time he would just... continue to find details about the killings. Finally, succumbing to this murder hole, Arturo pondered about, finally finding a thread of interested that was infested with people who mocked OP. His brow rose, reading about what she had gone through and the fact that she needed help. Typical. Policemen in their area definitely wouldn't try harder if they had no evidence, they'd just let it to rest.

He clicked around the page, tracking the user who had posted. His knuckles cracked again as he typed an e-mail:

The first email she received turned out to be a joke. Agitated, Gaela went to back to work, copying and filing the stack of papers she was given. In all honesty, she hated her coworkers. Everyone knew she was a heavy drinker back then, and sometimes they invite her to these parties where nearly everyone is just plastered. She usually leaves early, and the next day they complain about how she's a buzzkill. But yet she continues to work at the office, as it was the best job she's had in years. The next two hours of filing and finishing paperwork gave her a ton of papercuts, which she ignored as her mind wandered.

"Hey, did'ya finish filing?" The same coworker from earlier knocked on her cubicle, smiling and holding his hands out for the copies. Gaela rolled her eyes and turned around to face him, plopping the copies onto his awaiting hands. "Thanks, you're a real darlin'. You up to hang out tonight?"

"No thanks, I'm busy. Thanks for the invite anyways." She said, turning her chair back to face her computer. "Alright, well, have fun doing whatever then." After he stomped walked away, Gaela pulled up the browser to find another email notification. She was exasperated, all she wanted was help and she was probably turned away or made fun of again. When she opened it and read its contents, she was a little surprised. This person actually seemed genuine in wanting to help. Before she could reply, she glanced at the bottom right corner, which now read 6:47 p.m. And with that, she picked up her things and left the office.

Once home, she placed her keys in a small bowl on a table near the entrance, leaning against the wall to pull off her heels. After getting them off she dragged her tired body over to the couch and threw herself onto it, groaning as she rubbed her face into a pillow. When she pulled it off her face, she found that some of her makeup had rubbed onto the pillow. Sighing, she threw it across the room. Suddenly she remembered the email she had received before she clocked out of work, and fished her phone out from her jacket's pocket. Gaela pressed on the screen, typing in her reply and sending it as quickly as she could.

After sending it, she dropped her phone on the floor and fell asleep on the couch.

No, it wasn't like him to offer help, but he'd do anything to get to the bottom of the killings. Arturo was tired. Tired of people constantly bringing it up, tired of how so many people lived in fear because of someone who thought that it was okay to play God. The Hacker typed, replying to the e-mail the exact moment he got it; through it, he could feel how distressed the person was. Sure, helping people wasn't exactly his forte, but it was worth a shot, maybe playing the good guy cyber vigilante would help him figure out his life. It was time for change, positive change that could affect Arturo later in life.

When he pressed send, he spun in his chair, waking himself up from his fatigue. Hours upon hours in front of a computer had nearly drained the life from him, his back and arms sore from being hunched over; his head aching from being too close to his monitor. Arturo reached for his mask, covering his webcam as he pulled the mask off to rub his eyes. "Chingada Madre," the man spoke, standing from his chair to get ready for his side job at YOSOY. He just had to choose one of the most social jobs out there.

He'd gotten ready: tied his long hair and wore the uniform that he was given. Arturo looked at his reflection, not used to seeing himself with out the mask. And soon enough, he was on his way to work. Yes, getting to YOSOY was easy seeing that Berlin wasn't exactly the most cluttered of places, but it was frustrating due to the fact that many of the themed bars were run by stereotypes. Once he stepped through the doors of the restaurant, he was bombarded by the smell of Latin foods and the sound of lively music. Canción Del Mariachi played as he set down his backpack into his locker, being greeted by his co-workers. "Ai, Che-Che! Hola, mi amigo!" Giovanni reached up to pat the younger man's head, watching as Arturo looked at him with a plain expression. "Hola, Gio," Arturo replied to the much shorter and older man who greeted him with a friendly face.

Working at YOSOY provided a cover for him as well as a steady income to pay for his bills. Hacking wasn't doing much for him, so why wouldn't he get a real world job? During his shift, Arturo was questioned by women, flirted with, etc. The usual shift that he had to endure until it was one in the morning; having to hold his tongue in order to keep their guests happy.

It was now 21.00, the time of his break. Remembering what he had sent, Arturo rushed to the back, putting his mask on and waiting in the corner of the main area.

(lmao. It sux, but like its because THE HEATER IS ON AND IT'S LIKE 90+ DEGREES AND I WILL DIE.)

By the time she woke up, the morning sickness was starting to settle in. After struggling to get up, Gaela trudged to the bathroom, kneeling down in front of the toilet and preparing herself for her daily routine. Minutes of gagging and vomiting passed by slowly, at one point her throat started to feel raw, so she set herself up against the nearest wall and tried to put the breathing lessons she learned a while ago to work.

Of course, that didn't work. It was only an hour and a half later did she manage to get herself up and actually leave the bathroom, not before flushing what was left of her insides away. She reached down to pick up her phone that she dropped while sleeping into her impromptu sleep, scanning over the notifications for another reply. She opened the email, quickly reading its contents. Her heart stopped for a moment, like all of her problems had been completely washed over.

Gaela dreams that was the case. She checked the time, finding it 2 hours till her meeting with a complete stranger. "Shoot, I slept way too long.." She muttered, pulling herself towards the bathroom again to get ready.

The walk to the bar wasn't that long, it was only a brisk 45 minutes. She felt a little nervous to be stepping foot inside a bar, given her past problems with alcoholism. 'It's only for a meetup. Besides, there's food here, that'll keep me distracted. Hopefully.'

Upon entering, she whipped her head side to side in search of her unknown partner. In a corner she saw a masked man, wondering if that's what they meant by 'Mask.' Gaela ambled over to their spot, sliding into a seat and looking behind her shoulders anxiously. Then, she took a deep breath and turned towards the man, and held out her hand for him to shake. Giving him a sweet smile, she spoke, "Guten Abend. Ich heisse Gaela Wiegand. Können Sie mir helfen?"

Arturo had been waiting for quite a while, tampering with his gadgets as he had sat in his place. He was anxious. His eyes looked over to the clock, counting how long he had until he had to get back to his shift.

He looked up, hearing a feminine voice speak German to him. Arturo's mask lit up, flashing an exclamation and question mark to show his surprise and confusion to the woman. The man looked at her hand, typing into his phone; mask showing the words he was typing. "schön dich zu treffen?? ?!?" Google translate was a blessing. He typed again, asking her about why exactly she needed help on the case. "Why do u need my help??? did something happen??? do u have any evidence i can work with???????????" The hacker looked up at the clock again. 10 minutes. He shook his head, breathing in deeply as he leaned back. "Tell me quickly. I have 2 leave soon!!"

The flash of the man's mask confused her for a moment, realization dawning as words appeared on his mask. "Ah, sorry. I assume that a lot of people speak German, but it's almost starting to become like America." A light blush erupted over her face as she stared at the mask, mesmerized by the technology. She read the rest of whatever he had put in, the amount of question marks bothering her, but she chose not to complain.

"Uh, right. It's sort of a long story, but I'll save the details for another time, if of course you choose to stay and help," she paused and let out a sigh, "the police are pigs who won't do anything. It's been years and they haven't caught this psychopath, and I just want justice served. A close friend of mine was a victim, and um, for your last question.. I may not have anything yet. I honestly don't really know where to start."

Gaela glanced around the bar, wondering why the urgency. "Is there a problem?" She asked, leaning closer to the table.

He nodded, listening to every single word that she spoke, all the way down to where she complained about how the police were. Arturo seconded that opinion, nodding as she gave her reasoning to him. His head tilted, fingers tapping against the table as he listed possible solutions to her little problem. There were no leads, nowhere to start. There was nothing, and yet he still couldn't help but consider helping her. The hacker typed on his phone, projecting his words on the screen of his mask, "cctv footage. laptop cameras. go to the crime scenes yourself and pick up anything that could b useful. pigs r only persistent when its their lives on the line."

Arturo shook his head, flashing a quick "oh, no ^ ^''" on his mask in response to her question. Seeing her leaning closer, the man leaned back to keep a good distance in between them. Five minutes. "i can go through records later 2night and send them to you. nice doing business with u! ^ ^!!"

The man stood from the table, pocketing the phone whilst giving her a short wave goodbye. He was off, moving quickly; swerving in between people left and right. His hands were clammy, thoughts of backing out running through his mind. What if this investigation wasn't worth it? He shook his head, dashing into the back room where he threw the mask into his bag and wiped the sweat from his forehead. "Hey, Che-Che! Looks like you enjoyed your break, eh?" Gustavo joked, shoving the man. There was nothing but silence. Arturo nodded, tightening the apron around his waist. "Eh- uh. Yeah, Tavo."

During his shift, Arturo whipped around the floor; handing people their meals. Taking their orders. He took a few glances around, spotting Gaela among the many people that sat around, digging into their plates.

Relieved, she pulled back away from him, pulling out her phone to type in little notes about what he had told her to look for. She tried to maintain focus on his mask as well, but just after she finished tapping, his mask flashed "nice doing business with u! ^ ^!!" and he was gone. Sighing, Gaela shoved the phone back into her bag, running her hands through her hair.

It was like diving headfirst into a cold, running river, and she couldn't swim. A bad feeling was starting to brew in her stomach, but she ignored it and assumed it was the nausea building up from the unborn child stirring in her womb. Groaning, she placed her head on the table, but suddenly remembering that she was in a public establishment she pulled herself up quickly.

She had ordered some water a while ago, and she was so close to ordering herself a glass of rum and coke. But she knew she couldn't break her 2 year streak just yet. Gaela was starting to feel a little anxious being in here by herself, so after a few minutes of sipping at her water, she picked up her things and stood outside. The breeze was starting to pick up, and it was getting late. At this time of night, and with all the murders going on, she definitely wasn't interested in walking home in the dark for almost an hour.

There weren't any taxis nearby, and the nearest Lyft was 20 minutes away, and just when she was going to pull out her wallet to check if she had any money for the ride, she realized she had used the last of it for her drinks in the bar. Cursing, she ran her fingers through her hair, then moved her hands to hold her jacket closer to her body. Well, if she hurried home, she would hopefully not get into too much trouble.

( GOT DAMN i took forever lmao luv u, binch )

It was two days later and Arturo hadn't contacted her with what he had, and that was the thing, he didn't have much. He dragged his feet sluggishly along the soft carpet, his computer screen illuminating the room with a blue tint. His head pounded as if a hammer was being blown against it, and with strenuous and exhausted breaths, Arturo got to his desk. Restless nights were the cause of this, trying to gather information for a woman he didn't even know. He looked through every image and file he tapped into, each and every report making his stomach twist. With a hand against his forehead, Arturo continued to look through whatever evidence he could get his grubby hands on. In these past two days, it was like the investigation he had taken part in had completely engulfed him. He called off work, sat in front of a computer and only had a 2 hour nap.

But then, he stumbled upon it. A CCTV recording that the police had overlooked. The hacker scrolled in and out, taking in every detail of it. He opened his e-mails in an incognito browser, sending Gaela what he had found along with an analysis (that I'm honestly too lazy to write out right now.). In it showed a man exiting one of the victim's homes, but there wasn't a single drop of blood on him from what he could see. Arturo squinted to find anything else that could help and came across the license plate of the guy who had left the home. He looked it up, tracing whoever owned it, sending the name her way.
