Twenty Six Years

Harlianne doesn't have any romantic interests. She doesn't see a reason to hunt for that booty when there's a far more profitable booty, often involving gold and adventure, to be found.

With a shock of ginger hair, Harlianne stands out in a crowd. She's shorter than most pirates, likely due to her imp heritage. Her pale face, by some miracle, is only nearly always sunburnt. Of course, she manages to cover it up with the same old hat she's been wearing since she was a little girl, a gift given to her by her adoptive father and former Captain. As often as she can, she wears the beaten brown coat pictured in the photo, partnered with various weapons. On Earth, it seems to attract a bit of attention, so she swaps in her coat and traditional pirate gear for a billowing white shirt, capris, and firm shoes. The hat, of course, is mandatory. And let's not forget the hook instead of a left hand. It's rather charming, really.

Harlianne was raised to be a pirate, and so, she acts like a pirate. She looks out for her own self interest, twisting words and manipulating individuals if needed to get what she desires. The difference between good and evil doesn't bother her, as she follows her own moral compass in order to determine right from wrong. However, Harlianne doesn't wish ill on the world. She isn't out for the pain of others. She's merely doing whatever it takes to survive, using her resourcefulness to solve any problem that comes across her. At the end of the day, she'll make the choice that keeps her alive--but she won't needlessly maim or injure.

Of course, she's also got healthy curiosity and a sense of adventure! She constantly yearns for excitement and brand new sights, never content with just staying still. The sea calls to her, with the new wonders it brings each day, allowing her to move and to be free. Harlianne is a restless soul to the bitter end.

Harlianne's special talent is, without a doubt, survival. She has a natural inclination towards it, lending itself to her childhood aboard a pirate ship. Skilled with a cutlass and a pistol, Harlianne knows everything there is to know about smuggling and pillaging, having been taught how to do so since a young age. Of course, bluffing is one of her skills as well, as well as a tiny bit of sleight of hand.

, Harlianne's weakness is her loyalty to her crew. She'd do anything for them. While she may be selfish, she won't do anything to jeopardize those underneath her command. It's part of her code, the Pirate's Code, that has been drilled into her since the very beginning. And lastly, it is indeed sometimes true that curiosity killed the cat. Harlianne continues to repeat that lesson time and time again, resulting in the loss of her hand and a curse by a rather irritated witch she robbed.

To understand the story of Harlianne Hook, it is necessary to see how she came to be...The daughter of the sailors in the Royal Navy, Harlianne was orphaned. Her parents were sailing the Seven Seas on a long journey, giving birth to her along the way. They named her Harlianne James, after her mother's sister Harley and her father's sister Anne. When Harlianne was only three years old, catastrophe struck the ship. Boarded by pirates, her parents drew their last breaths in the ensuing conflict. The only child on board, Harlianne hid herself away inside of a barrel. The pirates looted all of the promising cargo, the barrel included, and abandoned the ship.

It was later, when they noticed someone had been stealing rations, that the pirates realized they had a stowaway. It was Harlianne, the daughter of Captain James and his wife. Rather than being cruel to her, the crew took a liking to the small child, seeing a pirate in the making. Too small to do more than grasp a hook, they endearingly nicknamed the child Harlianne Hook. The Captain of the ship adopted her, raising her to become a pirate.

She got her sea legs before she even walked on land, traveling the seven seas and seeing all of the wonderful sights and sounds. Her father and his crew taught her everything they knew, from fighting to aiming a pistol to steering a ship. They taught her how to determine a mark, how to navigate the seas, and how to use instruments such as a sexant. The sea and the Jolly Roger were her life, everything that she ever cared about. For the most part, Harlianne lived like a pirate, able to do whatever she wanted.

By the time Harlianne was thirteen years old, the young girl -- known as James Hook to those who would inquire, as sexism was still rampant in the Seven Seas -- had established a reputation for herself. Partially in order to keep this running joke going and to honor her birth parents, Harlianne shifted the surname James into her middle name, becoming Harlianne Jamie Hook. The running gag gave the crew of the Jolly Roger a fair deal of amusement. She went with the rest of the crew on their various jobs, helping to do whatever it was they were up to at the moment.

It was when Harlianne turned seventeen that her adoptive father was caught by the Royal Navy, after attempting to pull of a heist. He hanged in England, leaving the Jolly Roger to Harlianne. Taking control, she became known as Captain Hook. She ventured across the Seven Seas, doing her very best, and pulling off a number of heists. One of these, however, was rather unfortunate for the girl.

She had been stealing a bag of pixie dust from a witch, hoping to sell it for a pretty price at the nearest market. Rather than getting away scot free, the witch caught her. Amused by her name, the witch cut off Harlianne's left hand, replacing it with a hook. And in a sickening ritual, the witch cursed her. Whenever crocodiles were nearby her, they would pursue her relentlessly for the rest of her life.

It's hard not to develop a large fear of crocodiles like that.

However, that didn't stop Harlianne. She continued her voyages and her travels, getting rather good at spotting crocs and shooting them with her pistol. From time to time, she'd find herself in Neverland, plagued by a pesky brat named Peter Pan. Harlianne wasn't a villain, to be clear -- he merely just would get in her way, interrupting her pirate lifestyle.

Of course, among her travels on the Seven Seas, Harlianne inadvertently rescued a group of hostages. They had been attempting to flee Bellegarde and were taken prisoner. Harlianne just happened to be looting the boat they were on, allowing the hostages to go free. They wrote a song about her, about her heroics and kind attitude.

It still puzzles her.

For some odd reason, Harlianne was among those privileged few who were able to travel to Earth. She suspects that the irritating chanty about her heroics has something to do with it. Fortunately, though, Mystvale does have some waters nearby, and Harlianne tends to head over them to sail as much as she can. Lake Washington is her favorite, of course.

However, she's also a bit self conscious, surrounded by knights and queens and, well, heroes. She doesn't see herself as being one of them, causing a bit of isolation. That and they seem to be rather irritated if she ever steals their property. The legends of the world were rather amusing as well, seemingly picking up on the long running gag that she was a man, and not, in fact a woman.

Oh well. At least she was free--free to find a way back to the Jolly Roger and to the Seven Seas, a place she truly called home.

Anything goes with Alice!

She still has that icy blue dress, that iconic gown that always seemed to fit her as she grew taller and older in Wonderland. Alice doesn’t wear it as often as she once used to, as she found herself enamored more and more with the styles and fashions of Earth, but on days when she’s feeling particularly homesick for Wonderland before The Madness, she’ll wear the dress to remind herself of home.

On a normal day on Earth, however, Alice’s style is eccentric, to say the least. She usually can’t remember where exactly she acquired most of her wardrobe, but the city of Seattle and the suburb of Mystvale is weird enough to cater to Alice’s needs. Anything that makes her feel as close to the old Wonderland as possible fits the bill, so you can imagine it’s usually quite… odd.

She’s quite small, standing at 5’2, with a tiny frame that can never seem to pack on any weight no matter how hard she tries. Her hair, once a pure blonde, is often a wild blend of bright, eye-catching colors these days, though Alice always keeps a noticeable patch of her hair blonde, an irrationally sentimental thing she does to keep herself tied to Wonderland. Her eyes are always changing color, since Alice has discovered the Earthly wonder that is colored contact lenses, though they are blue beneath the contacts. Physically, Alice has somehow still managed to maintain an aura of innocene, even after the Madness did its best to corrupt and destroy her.

Alice was once a beacon of childhood innocence in the bizarre landscape of Wonderland. She had all the characteristics of a young child, no matter how old she got; curious and stubborn, but also polite and loving. She always found room to love the other residents of Wonderland, even though quite a number of them had wronged her in one way or another. There were always fights or disagreements in Wonderland, with Alice involved in more than her fair share, but she had a knack for resolving them and getting everyone to kiss and make up, in the end.

The Madness changed all of that. Her stubbornness evolved into anger and disgust, her innocence corrupted into a cynicism and darkness she had never before come close to experiencing. When Merlin pulled her out of Wonderland and onto Earth, Alice slowly began to recover, but everyone knew there was no chance she would ever be the same innocent girl she once was, not without some sort of cure.

These days, Alice can be somewhat unstable, stuck somewhere between the innocence that once resonated from her and the Madness, drifting between the two constantly. The trauma of watching the Madness devour Wonderland haunts her; she clutches dearly onto things known to her, and fears those unknown. Although Alice occasionally expresses some characteristics of who she once was, it’s not hard to notice the hopelessness and desperation within her.

Her understanding of reality is dwindling, what little of it there was prior to the Madness. Alice often sees figures that are not there, and on the particularly bad days, she’ll have conversations with nothingness. Some days she has a hysterical fear of the darkness, and others she hates being able to see, demanding to be enveloped by darkness to the point that she will wear blindfolds in a pitch black room.

Some days, Alice says the Madness is still talking to her. The only hope she has that keeps her going is that one day, someone can find a cure for the Madness and rescue Wonderland, so that she may go home and live in peace.

She’s a lot smarter than she seems, though her intelligence can be somewhat unorthodox. Nobody thinks outside of the box like Alice does, but then again, nobody else has had to deal with the trials of Wonderland and the horrors of the Madness like Alice has.

Her flaw is her innocence, and that she is too easily trusting of others. That is still mostly true, even after surviving the corruption of the Madness; although she fears new, unknown things, Alice can too often be easily coerced into trusting them. Her trauma makes her easily manipulated, as her grasp on what is real and what is not slips away from her.

The story goes that Alice fell down into the rabbit hole and survived Wonderland, only to awaken and realize it was all a dream at the very last moment. Alice would find that tale amusing; of all the nonsense of Wonderland, the presumed deus ex machina “rescuing” her from Wonderland is the most nonsensical.

As far as Alice can remember, she has always been in Wonderland. She knows that she once fell into a rabbit hole, but her memory only suggests that she entered the rabbit hole from Wonderland. She can’t fathom any other possibility. The rabbit hole is simply a short cut from the Hatter’s Tea Party to the Rabbit’s house, cutting straight through her Pool of Tears and over the Queen of Hearts’ bath tub. Not a pretty sight, but it’s much faster than walking all the way round the Cheshire Cat, particularly when it’s a quarter past Friday.

The stories of Alice’s adventures in Wonderland all happened at some point or another in her life, of course. She can’t quite recall in what order they took place, but she can without any doubt tell you that the Tea Party is still happening, even with the Madness taking hold of Wonderland. Rules are rules, and tea time is tea time. Madness and darkness can corrupt tea time and those taking part, but tea time is tea time.

Perhaps the biggest difference is, predictably enough, the trial for the Queen of Hearts’ tarts. Alice did not steal the tarts, but the Rabbit will testify that the Hearts’ tarts ended up in Alice’s pockets, while the Hatter will tell you that the Hearts’ tarts are actually with the Knave of Hearts, as originally charged, but the Knave of Hearts was not even present for the trial. Where the Hearts’ tarts ultimately ended up is of no importance, as the outcome of the trial was Alice’s imprisonment for refusing to leave the the court after growing a mile high.

She spent maybe a week in prison, before Alice realized that the key to her cell was hidden in her teeth the whole time. She simply walked out of the castle, with nobody even trying to stop her. Alice isn’t sure exactly how much time she spent in Wonderland following her “escape,” but she knows that at some point, her body took the form of an adult. It was a slow, strange transformation, but she was the same person at heart all throughout, so Alice never really gave it any mind.

Her life following her brief imprisonment was as peaceful as it could get in Wonderland. The Queen of Hearts was always trying to execute everyone, and the Tea Party always had too many riddles. The tales are too numerous and time too short, but rest assured, Alice’s life in Wonderland was filled with nonsense and bizzare happenings.

It would normally be said at this point that Alice eventually came to consider Wonderland home, but again, Alice believes she was always home. Regardless of whether she actually came from another land or not, Alice saw Wonderland as the place for her, and became comfortable residing there with all its mysteries. She doesn’t consider the possibility that there is a “true” home for her and that she might actually not be a Wonderland native, because that is simply too impossible a scenario for her to properly address.

The Madness came quickly. It overran Wonderland in what seemed like a matter of minutes, twisting the once colorful, absurd landscape into a dark, horrible hell. The Cataclysm destroyed many lands, but The Madness brought it to a new level. Alice could do nothing but watch as her friends were swallowed by the Madness. The Cataclysm fed on the bizzare nature of Wonderland, transforming its landscapes into a nightmare and its residents into unimagineable shadows of their former selves. Alice experienced the Madness firsthand, as its whispers crawled their way into her head and threatened to transform her into a shadow, as well. When Merlin arrived to rescue those that he could and bring them to Earth, Alice was only just sane enough to make it out.

Her time on Earth has helped to heal the wounds of the Madness, but without a true cure, the wounds still linger with Alice. She’s taken to life on Earth well enough, but it’s clear that Alice is completely out of her element in a “normal” world. Her mind is unstable enough as it is, given her upbringing in Wonderland and the trauma of the Madness; it doesn’t help that she relies on Earth’s drugs and hallucinogens to help her feel closer to Wonderland before the Madness.

She does not speak of what happened in Wonderland. Alice has enough trouble remembering the nightmare of watching her friends become monstrous doppelgangers of themselves; she has zero interest in revisiting those memories with others. She only wants to end the nightmares of the Madness and return home.
